24.01.2022 First couple of days of business. The children and myself are having such fun exploring our new environments.

23.01.2022 This is my most widely shared post. And rightly so, it’s an important one. These are prewriting patterns, with the average (not prescribed) age at which child...ren are developmentally ready to achieve these patterns listed below them in years and months. Being able to process visual information and produce a movement in response (e.g. copying these prewriting patterns or letter formations), is known as visual motor integration. Note that an X is not typically achieved until 4 years 11 months, and a triangle at 5 years 3 months. If a child can’t form these basic shapes...then they probably won’t be able to form letters. It is quite concerning then that there are 3 year 7 month olds starting formal schooling, where they’re expected to write. Not only are their visual motor integration skills not developed enough, their hands are also physically under-developed. In addition, recognising letters, understanding phonics and beginning to read are all needed in order for a child to write meaningfully, skills which children starting kindy typically don’t have. We also know that when a child learns something that doesn’t hold meaning, it‘s unlikely to stick. So if you have a 3-4 year old who spontaneously asks or attempts to write letters, that’s great; otherwise, there is no need to initiate or worry about this. Unfortunately there is a misconception, particularly with the way that the current curriculum stands, that earlier is better. Earlier is not always better. 16.01.2022 Here’s an awesome way to help your kids understand why we need to wash our hands. I saw a video online of a teacher doing this with her class and thought I’d try it. Spreading knowledge, not germs! #covid_19 #corona #washyourhands

12.01.2022 Hi everyone, Firstly let me just send you all LOVE right now. No matter where you are in the world and what your situation is; whether you are in isolation, qu...arantine or continuing your work with children, I am holding space for you. Take care of yourself, be gentle and help others in need if you can. We are all in this together. If you are isolated with children, and are unsure how to keep them entertained while they’re off school/care, my biggest piece of advice would be to PLAY. Give them time to play, explore, create and imagine. Take time yourself to play with them and rediscover the joy of what it is to be a child. You don’t need fancy equipment or the latest in toys or technology, just you, your children and a limitless imagination. There are times where you all may be bored - let that fuel your creativity and that of your children! Meanwhile, I’m sharing a few images of things you can do together during this time of togetherness and connection. Use what you have, be inventive and have fun!! Create a cosy nook to cuddle up and read stories together. Make nature pictures from collected items in your garden Paint and draw! Create flower potions, or mud potions, or bicarb and vinegar potions! Build with blocks, lego, magnatiles, duplo or wood offcuts. Think of creative ways to experiment with paint. Use different implements or unusual painting surfaces. Collect nature treasures, go on scavenger or treasure hunts around your home and garden. Paint stones and decorate your garden with them Have a tea party Put on uplifting music and get the instruments out. Or just dance! Cook together! Be brave and let children lead the way. Puzzles, board games, lively active games like tag or hide and seek. Build cubbies out of old blankets and sheets and hide out. Bird watch in your back yard Plant seeds in your garden Have pyjama, movie and popcorn days Do some nature weaving Woodwork! Teach your children to sew Have a backyard camp out Build a fire and cook damper Star gaze Identify as many creatures in the garden as you can. Mindfulness, yoga and meditation. Play in the MUD! Much love! Carlene xx
