24.01.2022 Missing strippers, trafficked Mexican girls, and muscly winter swells ... Don Winslow is one of the kings of surf noir. In this crime thriller, his hero, private detective Daniel Boone, is a surfer, a romantic, a bit lazy, and has a secret passion for Dostoevsky. Spike the Bubble Books and Music has this book, as well as a stack of brand new excellent fiction that we'll be selling at Broome's Night Markets tonight. If you're in need of a great read, make sure you swing past and say hello to Maggiev MacFie! The markets kick off at 4pm at Town Beach
23.01.2022 Spike founder B McDowell (top left) always encouraged the panic buying of books and hoarding vinyl! Due to the open and spread out format of our market and the fact that it’s outdoors, Spike the Bubble has decided to continue with the market this Saturday. We’ll have fully packed record boxes, second hand books and DVDs! If we find ourselves spending more time at home over the coming weeks, if there’s one silver lining, it’s that we can reconnect to some of the simple ple...asures in life like reading and listening to music. We hope to see our customers at the market supporting local businesses!
23.01.2022 Here at Spike the Bubble Books and Music, we're getting behind WritingWA's May initiative #lovetoreadlocal !! It's about reading and supporting WA's wonderful and unique writers and illustrators. At the moment, we're devouring book three in Brenton McKenna's fabulous Ubby's Underdogs series, John Watson's Never Stand Still, and Steve Hawke's Noonkanbah. We'd love to see pics of your current WA stack and hear any suggestions of great West Australian books. Maggiev MacFie also hopes to see you down at the Broome Markets when they reopen.
21.01.2022 Hi all! Maggie from Spike the Bubble Books and Music is setting up now for the beautiful Town Beach Staircase Markets. She has a great selection of books, including this gem by Marie Mankara, published by Broome's Magabala Books. It's set in Darwin and follows the tale of Sugar, an Aboriginal fringe-camp dweller. It's a hilarious book interspersed with illicit affairs, stolen children, leprosy and fucking foreigners. The characters are outrageous, and include Ralphie Brown, who has the unedifying honour of being the only public servant to ever be sacked, and Drew Hepplewaite, a redneck racist and female patrol officer armed with balls of steel. She has this and plenty more! Hope to see you down there.
21.01.2022 There's something thrilling about experiencing danger secondhand, from the comfort of a camp chair. Here at Spike the Bubble Books and Music we've been reading Mountain's of the Mind ... an account of mountaineering that culminates in Mallory's three Everest expeditions. On the third expedition, there's a story about two of his companions who have climbed as high as they can, over ice like giant overlapping roof tiles, and they now must turn back for fear of death. ...'Precariously he descends the slabs and meets Somervell. They descend together back towards the col, with Norton perhaps twenty yards ahead of Somervell. Suddenly, Somervell coughs hard, agonisingly hard, and feels something from inside him, some object, detach itself and jam in his throat. He begins to choke to death. He cannot breathe, nor can he shout to Norton ... He sits down in the snow and watches Norton walk away from him. Then - a final effort - he hammers his chest and throat with his clenched fist, and simultaneously coughs as hard as he can. The thing dislodges itself and jumps into his mouth. He spits it out onto the snow. It's a chunk of his larynx, killed by frostbite.' Spike the Bubble Books and Music are glad our winters aren't like this ... and also glad to announce that we will be back at the Broome Markets next Saturday!!!!!!! I'll be down there helping mum set up, so make sure you come past and say hello. We have some excellent new stock which we'll keep you posted about through the week. See you next Saturday ! See more
21.01.2022 Good morning Broome! This week at Spike the Bubble Book's and Music we're obsessing over Ludmilla Petrushevskaya's: There Once Lived a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbour's Baby. In this collection of macabre tales, we meet a distraught father, who brings his daughter back to life by eating human hearts in his dreams ... a wizard, who punishes two beautiful ballerinas by turning them into one hugely fat circus performer ... and a woman who hated her child's neighbour so much, she left pots of boiling water, boxes of needles, and containers of bleach in the hallway where the baby crawled. Petrushevskaya is said to be heir to the spellbinding tradition of Gogol and Poe. This book, and some more great Russian reads, are available at Spike the Bubble Books and Music at the Broome Markets today. Hope to see you soon !
19.01.2022 Put your finger on the wound, and press down hard. Hit the bottle as you are tossed between bitterness and anguish. Milk the welfare state in order to thrive like a parasite. That's Michel Houellebecq's advice to aspiring writers. He's a French writer. He's outrageous, odious, and for a while, he couldn't leave the house without bodyguards, for fear of attacks on his life. Here at Spike the Bubble Books and Music, we're waiting for his book 'Whatever' to arrive in the post. It's about a chainsmoker with an office job who reflects bitterly on his inability to seduce women. We bought it because we liked the cover. If it's a winner, it'll be for sale at the Broome Markets when Spike the Bubble Books and Music reopens ... perhaps for the July school holidays, mum?
16.01.2022 Good evening everyone! If you're in need of a tasty feed, and a balmy evening out, the Town Beach night markets are on now. There are plenty of market stalls, including Spike the Bubble Books and Music. We've got a great collection of fiction and non-fiction ... including this brilliant book - Jandamarra and the Bunuba Resistance - by Banjo Woorunmurra and Howard Pedersen. This is the true story of the Aboriginal resistance fighter, Jandamarra, whose legend is etched into the Kimberley landscape. It's a must-read!! Maggiev MacFie is holding court at the Spike stall now
16.01.2022 'I'm not interested in the beautiful sentence,' Virginie Despentes told a reporter. 'That's fine for other people, but I don't give a fuck about it.' Spike the Bubble Books and Music is getting acquainted with the female Charles Bukowski, an authoress who wrote her early books in coke-fuelled binges, up against hard deadlines. Her first novel 'Baise-Moi' was made into a film so radical, it united fascists and the far left, Christians and feminists. It was banned from all but a handful of pornographic theatres in France ... which prompted more interest. A film too sexual for the libertine French??? Spike the Bubble has got a stack of her books on order ... so, we'll see! In the meantime, Spike is still closed while Maggie figures out a way home from tropical Cairns
16.01.2022 Madelaine will be live on Facebook via Swan Library this evening talking about Red Can Origami ! Like the Swan Library Community Facebook page to gain access. 5:00pm in Western Australia... 7:00pm EST Can’t wait to join you tonight Madelaine
15.01.2022 On this stifling morning, Spike the Bubble Book's and Music is thinking of László Krasznahorkai's apocalyptic literary masterpiece Satantango ... in which the end of the world is approaching in a deluge of rain that turns everything into a muddy mire that mirrors the spiritual condition of its inhabitants. 'We think we’re breaking free but all we’re doing is readjusting the locks. We’re trapped, end of story.' It was made into a seven hour film by Bela Tarr ... and some wit wrote, that you get seven hours of this (referring to this pic). Maggie Macfie doesn't have Satantango at the Broome Markets this morning, but she does have plenty of great second hand books and vinyl.
15.01.2022 The Town Beach Markets are on tonight!! Spike the Bubble Books and Music has a superb range of new and local books for you to check out ... here's a little teaser. Hope to see you down there
14.01.2022 A book consists of two layers: on top, the readable layer ... and underneath, a layer that was inaccessible. You only sense its existence in a moment of distraction from the literal reading, the way you see childhood through a child. It would take forever to tell what you see, and it would be pointless.- Marguerite Duras This week at Spike the Bubble Books and Music we're revisiting the French writer Marguerite Duras. The Lover is disturbing, erotic, and layered ... set in Saigon in the 1930s it's about an affair between a young French girl, and the son of a wealthy Chinese family. Maggiev MacFie and I argue about the value of some of her later work, but we both agree, this one is absolutely sublime! Maggie is at the Broome Markets now with plenty of wonderful books and vinyl.
14.01.2022 'See, that's nothing but blues, that's all I'm singing about. It's today's blues.' - Jimi Hendrix This weekend, Spike the Bubble Books and Music would like to acknowledge the passing of our friend Kevin Smith. Kevin was a fellow carnie at the Broome Markets, a music connoisseur, reader, talented photographer and Broome identity. Kevin, we'll miss you. Thanks for our chats on a Saturday morning at the markets. Thanks for your principles. Thanks for keeping the bastards hones...t. Sending our love to friends and family. See more
12.01.2022 "Lose your dreams And you will lose your mind. Ain't life unkind? This week, Spike the Bubble Books and Music are spinning a couple of classic albums from the Rolling Stones. We've got Made in the Shade and Undercover, both on vinyl, both secondhand in good nick, both ready to go to a good home now. Mum is down at the Broome Markets with these, and plenty more great records and books.
10.01.2022 'We have to keep company with supposedly bad characters if we are to survive and not succumb to mental atrophy. People of good character, so called, are the ones who end up boring us to death.' Thomas Bernhard. At Broome's Spike the Bubble Books and Music, to honour our Austrian literary hero Thomas Bernhard, we're wishing everyone an exciting weekend with friends of bad character!! Maggiev MacFie is sweating it out at the Broome Markets now, with plenty of great books and vinyl for sale
09.01.2022 'The scene had a subaqueous timbre that I recognise now as a light that shines in the dreams I have when I sleep on my back and wake up half-drowned.' - Denis Johnson ... Here at Spike the Bubble Books and Music, we're feeling a bit nostalgic, feeling a kind of grief for what might have been lost. There's always solace to be found in the best poetry and Denis Johnson's is pretty sublime. Mum, pictured here in Portugal in simpler times, will be looking to do home deliveries of books and vinyl to Broome mob soon. See more
09.01.2022 This week at Spike the Bubble Books and Music we've been listening to the spooky Westerns and gravelly ballads of Buck Curran's latest album, No Love Is Sorrow. Uncut magazine rates the album 8and we're inclined to agree~! For plenty more music chat and some great second hand books and vinyl, swing past the Broome Courthouse Markets this morning
09.01.2022 ‘I have always admired the villain, the outlaw, the son-of-a-bitch. I don't like the clean-shaven boy with the necktie and the good job. I like desperate men, men with broken teeth and broken minds ’ Spike the Bubble Books and Music spent last night drinking with Charles Bukowski today, he’s coming with us to the Broome Markets. We have a brand-new stash of outré page-turners for those who like their literature dark and addictive and dangerous. Also, mum has a great selection of vinyl, second-hand books and music. Come down to the markets for a look!
08.01.2022 Spike the Bubble Books and Music is back at the Broome Markets just in time for Chrissy!! Maggiev MacFie spent hours gift wrapping some treasures of books last night, including this one, The Beach, a beautiful collection of drawing and paintings by WA artist Brian Simmonds. It features all our favourite beaches - Cape Leveque, Turquoise Bay, Prevelly, Cottesloe and more. West is best! Charlotte Ruth is also lacquering up with some mozzie repellent and is on her way down now.
07.01.2022 Paul Cleave has been told his books are too dark for his home market of New Zealand. Here at Spike the Bubble Books and Music, we love dark, and Paul's crime novel The Cleaner fits the bill. There's one particular scene that caused uproar, involving a deserted park at dawn, a pair of pliers and a left testicle flattened like road kill ... On top of this, The Cleaner is really, blackly funny. Mum has a copy for sale at the Broome Markets today ... and it turns out Paul is Kim Cleave's cousin - Kim's also at the Broome Markets with her exquisite jewellery designs!! Hope to see you down there soon!
06.01.2022 Too much joy, I swear, is lost in our desperation to keep it. Ocean Vuong, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous This week at Spike the Bubble Books and Music we're swooning over this magical book by Ocean Vuong. He's a poet; it's a love story; the Guardian observes in a review '...in early youth, somewhere beyond the margins of conventional society, there’s a brief authentic flowering of life and happiness, which can’t be carried forward into disappointing, grown-up, settled existence.' Maggie from Spike the Bubble Books and Music is at the Broome Markets now with this beautiful book and plenty more great books and vinyl.
05.01.2022 They say reading Marcel Proust is a bit like climbing Everest. Along the way, you pass the bodies of those readers who haven't made it to the top ... If you're not feeling like an Everest-like reading experience this summer, Broome's Spike the Bubble Books and Music has got you sorted with some exhilarating, stimulating and still-literary racy reads. Maggie Macfie is at the Broome Markets now with some award-winning crime by Emma Viskic, surf noir by Kem Nunn, and some of Steinbeck's lighter and hilarious works. This will be our last market before Chrissy. Come down and stock up!!!
05.01.2022 Great market today but an even better Christmas market next Saturday.
03.01.2022 Here at Spike the Bubble Books and Music we've just finished reading Charles Burns' Last Look, a surreal graphic novel that moves with the shifting strangeness of dream. We meet a murderous boyfriend, a beautiful girl, a father's ashes. We meet talking maggots, lizard men, and pig-like creatures indebted to 1950s horror movies. We'd love to know - if Spike the Bubble was stocking eclectic graphic novels at the Broome Markets, would anyone be interested?? In the meantime, mum is down at the Broome Markets now, with a great selection of new and secondhand books as well as vinyl.
02.01.2022 Plenty of activity here at Broome Courthouse Market. Overcast and a breeze so get down here early.
01.01.2022 Broome's Spike the Bubble Books and Music has been devouring the deranged stoner comedy 'Bad Gateway' ... described in the New York Review of Books as a graphic novel in which 'depression hits a low register and stays there, both ambient drone and narrative pulse'. It's written and illustrated by a Tasmanian-born artist, Simon Hanselmann, and is at turns laugh out loud funny and entirely depraved. Maggie will be back at the Broome Markets on AUGUST 8 (!!) with an excellent range of books and vinyl, and some equally excellent recommendations for both.
01.01.2022 This week at Spike the Bubble Books and Music we're feasting on the Moroccan classic 'The Process' by Brion Gysin. It's a crappy title for a crazy book of drug fuelled poetry ... Gysin writes that the lunar Sahara, one morning, is 'cindered over with a fine blue ash of frost' ... and that it's a place where 'travellers are not allowed their own dreams'. Given we're not able to travel overseas, Spike is trafficking in a range of imaginative journeys this morning at the Broome Markets. We've got some fantastic books, new and secondhand, for journeys of the mind ... as well as vinyl and cds for journeys of the spirit. Maggiev MacFie is down there now! Hope to see you soon
