A group of Australian spill control manufacturers and importers created the AusSpill Association in 2012. AusSpill was f...Continue reading

13.01.2022 What Is a Compliant Spill Kit? In November, 2018 the only active spill control industry association in Australia, AusSpill published the AusSpill product quality guidelines. These guidelines sets requirements for appearance, labeling, description and performance claims of spill kits sold in Australia by AusSpill members. After a long period of research and working closely with mobile bin manufacturers, it was determined that lime greens bins are not currently being used for a...ny purpose in Australia. This presented an opportunity to the spill control industry to have a unique colour so that users can quickly differentiate a spill kit from a refuse bin. The requirement for a lime green bin body is covered in Section 5 of the guidelines. Section 5 goes on the state the requirement for identifying the different types of spill kits through the use of colour coded lids. White lid for Oil Only, grey for General Purpose and yellow for Hazchem. Section 6 of the AusSpill spill kit quality guidelines sets out the terminology to be used to describe the application of a spill kit. It is broken down into 3 categories; General Purpose, Hazchem and Oil & Fuel Only. Minimum font size of identifying labels is covered in section 7 of the standard. It states that the primary spill kit descriptors must be in clear 50mm high capitals against a contrasting background. One of the most important aspects of the AusSpill spill kit quality guidelines is the requirement that all sorbent components of a spill kit are submitted to an independent AusSpill approved laboratory to test sorbents to BS7959-1, Materials used for the control of liquid spillages, Determination of Sorbency. Because of the lack of regulation in the area of spill response and control, many operators have been artificially inflating the sorbent capacity of their spill response kits. As well as being contrary to consumer laws, is made it impossible for consumers to be able to compare different brands of spill kits. This lack of transparency also puts spill kit users in the position of not being able to address a chemical spill effectively. Failure to clean up chemical spill can lead to significant fines from both environment and safety regulators. This testing regime that now applies to all spill kits bearing the AusSpill mark of Compliance gives users the confidence that the spill kit will perform as required. The AusSpill spill kit quality guidelines have been written and published as a precursor to the introduction of and Australian Standard to further regulate spill response and control equipment. AusSpill already has written stakeholder support from environment and safety regulators around Australia and New Zealand, AFAC and relevant industry associations. Contact Spill Station Australia to get your copy of the AusSpill spill kit quality guidelines.

09.01.2022 Do Your Spill Kits Conflict With Australian Standards? AS 4123.7 is the Australian Standard "Mobile waste containers colours, marking and designation requirements". This Australian Standard sets out colour designations for bodies and lids of mobile waste containers. For many years, the spill control industry has packed spill kits into variously coloured bins that have been in conflict with AS4321.7.... AS4123.7 designates the various mobile bin body colours to be used to store the following types of waste; Yellow Clinical Waste Red Radioactive Waste Blue Office Paper Spill Kits are often found near waste bins and confusion caused by bin colours can have dire consequences. In an attempt to address this conflict, the AusSpill Association has developed a set of guidelines for spill kit appearance and performance. In this document, it identifies the unique colour of lime green for use as the spill kit body. This readily identifiable colour is not in conflict with any Australian Standard. Not all manufacturers are required to adhere to these guidelines but AusSpill members believe that transitioning to the lime green kit bins will provide a genuine net benefit for all spill kit users. 07.01.2022 $15,000 Fine For Adblue Spill On 16th of August this year, the EPA attended a site near Newcastle and noticed a large amount of urea spilt near the entrance. This spill had been tracked by vehicles leaving the site into gutters that led to stormwater drains.... Urea is the active ingredient in adblue. Although this substance is considered non-hazardous it is high in nitrogen. Small amounts can cause significant water pollution. As a result of this incident, the company was fined $15,000 by the EPA and had to take measure to ensure it does not occur again. Don't wait until you get a $15,000 fine before you then invest in making your adblue decanting area safe. Contact Spill Station today
