24.01.2022 Repost: ALIF exposure final steps. This great operation has an excellent fusion rate due to the large cages one can insert. Indirect decompression of the foraminae and the canal can be suboptimal at times and redo operations at the index level can be more frequent. Adjacent level surgery is lower than posterior approaches. All in all a very good option. #anatomy #ALIF #surgery #neurosurgery #spine #spinesurgery #operation #medical #fusion

20.01.2022 Repost from @hijama_sunna_ramadan using @repostregramapp. Bloodletting has been practiced around the world even longer than that, tracing at least 3,000 years ago to the Egyptians. It remained an obsession among many Western doctors through the 19th century, and was still a recommended treatment for pneumonia in a 1942 medical textbooklest you think it went out after the Middle Ages along with the laying on of leeches. (Oh, and leeches still get some play, too, mainly for dr...awing down pockets of blood after plastic surgery or vascular microsurgery. Bloodletting’s detractors grew in numbers after that, and eventually Pierre Louis, the founder of medical statistics, began convincing doctors to rely on statistical evidence over anecdotal recoveries of patients who had been bled. A particularly impressive analysis showed that bloodletting did not help pneumonia victims in Europe, and after bitter disputes among doctors in the 1850s, the practice began dying out. In fact, one history of bloodletting refers to the stamping out of the practiceover the objections of the medical establishment, no lessas a triumph of reason and one of the greatest stories of medical progress. #blood #bloodletting #alternativemedicine #alternativetherapy #neurosurgery #scalptreatment #cupping #surgery #medicine

18.01.2022 #Repost @drerichanderer with @get_repost A lot of my account discusses ways to treat back pain with self-care and exercise. I will also be highlighting surgical topics since that is what I spend most of my days doing, after all.. . .... Everyone has heard of spinal fusions in the low back (lumbar spine) but why would you ever need one? First off, the surgery involves immobilizing one or more segments of your spine using a cantilever mechanism - which any of your friends in engineering or construction can talk to you about. I’ve put up a picture of a typical screw which goes in the lumbar vertebrae...and how those screws are connected by a rod and, at the end, an example of cantilever use in a shelving system (to demonstrate the concept of how a series of rods and bars can form a stable entity). . . The scientific evidence is constantly evolving, and this educational post can never replace a discussion with your treating physician. Very broadly, however, I do this surgery for these reasons: . . Spondylolisthesis (ie functional instability/abnormally positioned vertebrae). . Fractures. . Infections. . Recurrent disc herniations. . Scoliosis. . Cancer. . . The idea is that you are trying to restore stability when something has made your spine less stable. Things that fall outside these categories - like chronic low back pain from degenerative disc disease - I generally try and treat non-operatively. Feel free to ask me questions about this and, most importantly: stay active, eat healthy, and seek out treatment advice if pain is having a significant impact on your quality of life. . . . #spinesurgery #spinehealth #chronicpain #neurosurgery #spinefusion #backpain #residentlife #nurse #scrubs #scrublife #medstudent #medicalschool #surgeon #spine #paschool #physicaltherapy #premed #corestrength See more
