23.01.2022 INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY 2020 On International Womens Day this year, were profiling Spinifex Hill Studio artist and arts worker Lorna Dawson, a proud Nyamal woman and mother of four. In 2019, Dawson and her daughter Kim McKie were employed as arts workers at Spinifex Hill Studio. It is here that they bond over a shared passion for family, culture, and art. ... Her role as an arts worker increases the capacity and supports the efficiency of the art centre. It has been a pleasure to watch Dawson develop her artistic practice in recent times and the exciting opportunities that have emerged from her dedication, including being invited to exhibit in The Womens Show 2020 alongside leading and emerging Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander women artists. Dawson has also been invited to showcase her artwork at the 2020 Revealed Exhibition at Fremantle Arts Centre, which marks another huge milestone. For me I started painting as a personal journey," she said. "I picked up a few skewers and it helped me get through my bad days. I just paint in dots. I dabble in dots as I like to say. 15.01.2022 Support regional Art Centres online As of tomorrow, Spinifex Hill Studio will be closing its doors for the time being and we will review this decision in a few weeks time. This closure will have a dramatic impact on the lives of some of our most vulnerable artists. A number of key annual Aboriginal arts initiatives have been cancelled that represent critical income streams for regional and remote art centres. Spinifex Hill Studio completely respects @fremantleartscentre... decision to cancel the Revealed 2020 Exhibition and Art market that was scheduled to take place next month. This market is a major event and generates thousands of dollars in income for Spinifex Hill Studio and the States aboriginal communities. We have just uploaded over 100 new works to our website, so the great news is that you will be able to shop the works we would have taken to Revealed in the comfort of your home. We are not sure yet of the scale of impact this situation is going to have on our industry, but the entire arts community is in this together. #spinifexhillartists #supportlocalartists #supportart #spinifexhillstudio #regionalartists #artcommunity #artforsale #shoponline See more

07.01.2022 It has been lovely to have Gladys Bidu in the Studio this past week. Martu mob often visit us when they are in town, visiting family or going to the shops. It’s been such a pleasure having Gladys here, sharing with all of us her wisdom and sense of humour. "I’m from Punmu. I’ve been painting quite a while. Good while. About a long time ago, she (Gabrielle from Martumili) came out with canvas and painting to Jigalong and I seen that old peoples painting at the river bed, in the creek but I was sick that day. This is when I just start. My aunty (Jakayu Biljabu) taught me how to do painting, a couple of years ago. That[s] how I learned. I do Martumili painting. I do painting about my country, my birth area. It’s Wantili, well 25." We’ve just added some of Gladys’ newest artworks to our online store (link in bio).
