24.01.2022 5 Facts about Spinnaker HRF! We hope you enjoy learning a little more about us Music by bensound.com
24.01.2022 Tahnae and Anthony had their first child Ava two years ago in the most traumatic of circumstances. There was a tear in the placenta and Ava had been bleeding out for a long time. When they found out they were pregnant again, they were nervous and hopeful for a normal pregnancy. Unfortunately, yet again they needed the expert care of the staff at Fiona Stanley Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Logan had also suffered a bleed and his brain had been starved of oxygen so... he was rushed to the NICU to begin a lifesaving brain-cooling treatment. Both of Tahnae and Anthony’s children fought their way into the world. They are here because of lifesaving research. I was amazed when I learnt the cooling procedure research is led by Dr Shail Mehta and the team here at Fiona Stanley Hospital along with many other Aussie hospitals, to improve the safety and application of the brain cooling procedure to save more babies. I was even more amazed to learn that research like this is only possible thanks to the kind support of people like you. - Tahnae Your kindness today could help babies like Ava and Logan survive. Please, if you can, give a gift towards research this festive season. https://www.spinnakerhealth.org.au/support/donate/ Read Tahnae's full story here: https://mailchi.mp/spinnakerhealth/tahnae

20.01.2022 As men grow older, testosterone levels decline, and they are at increasing risk of being overweight, and developing type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Prof Yeaps recent study has revealed that the combination of testosterone treatment with an integrated health and wellbeing program can significantly reduce the risk, or reverse the incidence, of diabetes in men. As diabetes is one of the leading causes of ill-health in the world, these findings have significant local and global impact. You can hear first hand about these findings at MEN. 20.01.2022 Spinnaker is proud to be an official signatory on Australian Philanthropys Pledge: a list of principles for grantmakers and supporters of the not-for-profit sector to provide guidance in responding to this unprecedented challenge that is the COVID-19 crisis. As both a grantmaking foundation and beneficiary of philanthropic support, we indeed support this Pledge that reinforces the need for philanthropists and grantmakers to continue to fund important work in our communities during and after the crisis. https://www.spinnakerhealth.org.au//a-call-to-action-aust/

18.01.2022 Spinnaker is proud to support the Heart and Lung Research Institute of WA Inc who are working hard to improve organ donation. This year, we supported HLRI's Dr Herbert Ludewick whos project aims to identify when a patient is at risk of lung transplant rejection: "Rejection can happen at any time after the lung transplant and is the most common complication that leads to death...The grant provides us with opportunity to evaluate a panel of genes that could provide a more accu...rate and earlier diagnosis of acute lung rejection, a major life threatening problem for patients that have received a transplant lung." Donate to support heart and lung research at www.spinnakerhealth.org.au You can spot Herbert working away in the lab at 0:17 seconds.

18.01.2022 2020 has revealed some important truths for us all, particularly how dependent our economy and society is on the not-for-profit sector. While the government has responded remarkably in the face of adversity, it is in fact the services and support offered by charities across almost every sector that has kept food on the tables of the hungry, sheltered others when they are unsafe, provided financial assistance to those who cannot make ends meet and emotional and psychological s...upport when it has all become too much. Our sector has also worked hard to find the medical answers and solutions needed to heal the sick and lead us out of uncertainty into a safer health future as we learn to live with the changed circumstances of the world. But charities are doing it tough. Many, just like ours, are directing all of their financial and human resources to the COVID-19 battle. It is tax time; please think carefully about whether you can make a donation to keep our charities heads above water. https://www.spinnakerappeal.org.au

11.01.2022 A study aimed at reducing long term disease risks in children who are overweight or obese has produced some incredibly important findings. A/Prof Timothy Fairchild's study has revealed a 40% improvement in sleep, reduction in stress, depression and anxiety, as well as improved self esteem and school participation, were some of the ancillary findings for all participants. Thanks to our long term supporters Austal for funding this 2019 Spinnaker Grant which is having an immediate positive impact for the children involved! 09.01.2022 Western Australian men continue to experience poorer health outcomes than women across almost every indicator of physical and mental health and wellbeing. They are over represented in early death from heart disease, suicide, diabetes and cancer and live with a total disease burden greater than women. Research led by specialists at Fiona Stanley Hospital seeks to integrate an evidenced based platform of mental and physical health to prevent early death and life impacting condi...tions. Join West Australian Chief Scientist Professor Peter Klinken AC and a panel of leading health experts to discuss an integrated model of evidenced based research that will improve the physical, mental, social and emotional well-being of men and boys living in WA. If we do it together, we can make our men and boys healthier. WED 7 OCTOBER, 5:30 PM, STATE LIBRARY WA THEATRE Register here: https://healthiermen.eventbrite.com.au

05.01.2022 Today is International Men’s Day and we think it is about time we talked about men’s health. Spinnaker has supported men’s health research projects in many areas including cardiovascular disease, mental health, diabetes and cancer. But it hasn’t been enough. Men continue to live with a greater burden of disease and die at a younger age than women. Spinnaker is committed to changing that. Visit www.healthiermean.com.au to learn more.
05.01.2022 Today, on International Nurses Day, we celebrate, acknowledge and thank nurses all over the world for their remarkable service. During these difficult times, the contribution that our nurses have made and continue to make in our societies is immeasurable. Pictured is Jade Ferullo, one of the fabulous nurses and researchers Spinnaker has had the privilege to working with. "Nurses play a vital role in advocating for patients and their families. I am passionate about improving the delivery of patient care and promoting the health and wellbeing of patients and their family" - Jade Ferullo
04.01.2022 Today is World Diabetes Day. Since 2000, Spinnaker has committed more than $430,000 to diabetes research in the south metropolitan community. Diabetes is a chronic condition, where the body’s ability to produce and utilise insulin is impaired, resulting in high blood sugar levels. Effective treatment requires individuals to self-manage their diabetes care activities on a daily basis. These behavioural requirements can be challenging, and for many individuals can become burde...nsome, and accompanied by psychological distress. Dr Melanie Burkhardt (pictured) was the recipient of the Edith Hearne Bequest Grant in 2018 and says, "Thanks to the generosity of the Edith Hearne Bequest, we recruited and offered psychological interventions to 45 individuals living with high-risk diabetes in our South-metropolitan community. To date we have learnt that personalised psychological interventions can improve diabetes self-care behaviours, help coping with demands of living with diabetes, and reduce psychological distress."
04.01.2022 Congratulations to Prof Elaine Holmes who has been awarded the prestigious Australian Laureate Fellowship from the Australian Research Council. Prof Holmes Fellowship aims to improve our understanding of age-related changes in the gut microbiome, which can ultimately contribute to the treatment and prevention of disease worldwide. https://www.murdoch.edu.au//professor-elaine-holmes-awarde

02.01.2022 Mens Health Week: Exciting results of a multi-centre, Australia wide study has revealed that the combination of testosterone treatment with a healthy lifestyle program can significantly reduce the risk, or reverse the incidence, of diabetes in men. The Spinnaker team had the privilege of attending a presentation at Fiona Stanley Hospital of the T4DM study by Prof Bu Yeap to share the results of the research project Testosterone to prevent Type 2 Diabetes in high risk men w...ith local health and research practitioners in WA. As diabetes is one of the leading causes of ill-health in the world, these findings have significant local and global impact. The two-year study was conducted across five capital cities in Australia and was led by Prof Gary Wittert of. The University of Adelaide who officially presented the findings this week. Study centres included Fremantle and Fiona Stanley Hospitals. Prof Yeap is a past and current grant recipient of Spinnaker and is seeking to expand his research, which has continued with a generous gift from Michael Buckley and the team at Lawley Pharmaceuticals . His work examines the influence of testosterone on mens health, including diabetes and heart disease, and the effects of combining testosterone with exercise. Watch this space!
