24.01.2022 We are super excited to have a screening of David Bradburys latest film in West End on the evening of 23rd November followed by a Q&A with David. AMERICA & ME documents the filmmakers observations over three months in the US during the lead up to the shock election of Donald Trump. A one-man band and always traveling with his camera, David Bradbury was easily able to slip into gear and start filming while on tour of his antimilitarism documentary War on Trial. Eight US citie...s later he chronicled what was happening on the streets of America; 40 years after Ronald Reagan introduced the economic theories of Milton Friedman and the infamous Chicago Boys to the world. He interviews veterans of Americas failed wars to maintain Empire, gets down in the gutter with the homeless to find out what life is like on the streets, speaks to a nun who was violated by the military junta in Guatemala under the directions of a CIA operative, goes to the US/Mexican border where Trump plans to build the Wall, visits the rust belt of middle America where factories are closed and people are hurting...and ends up at the Standing Rock protest camp for Election Day. These vignettes give context to his critique of the American penchant for Empire, using telling moments from his earlier films shot on the edge of the American colossus Nicaragua No Pasaran, Chile Hasta Cuando?, Frontline, South of the Border and Public Enemy Number One. Screening details: 6:30 pm23 rd ofvember Tickets available online at Eventbrite or at the door. See more

01.01.2022 These teens are suing the government for wrecking the planet. Spoiler alert: The courts are ruling in their favor. (via NowThis)

01.01.2022 As many of you would remember SPIRAL Hub first established Jane St garden and re-established Paradise St Community Garden back in 2003 with local council support from Helen Abrahams. We jumped in and made them happen informed by the just do it attitude of our local Councillor at the time. The Paradise and Jane St gardens both broke the rules at the time for what constituted recreational activities in public parks. I dont think that has ever changed. Theyve stayed ...because they are there and its impossible politically for Council to close them. It would not be a good idea to for the community to consent to shifting the garden under the guise of an improvement project The power of those gardens is that they are there. Allowing them to be destroyed while a new master plan gets built would be very dangerous for their future. It takes a lot to build a community garden, not just the infrastructure and the plants and gardens themselves but the sense of spirit collective and community ownership. Community building is a process and a discipline and such projects do not just appear. The reasons the gardens have stood the test of time and maintained ongoing community ownership and engagement, is in part due to their initial community foundations that set a culture of constantly welcoming new waves of gardeners in to the space. These gardens were started with very little and were built entirely with the labour of community volunteers and the materials and equipments scavanged by friends and neighbours. The designs were done collectively calling our friends and comrades together with permaculture experience to help us design and plan them. So many great people have volunteered in these gardens at some time in their life while being a part of the West End Community. For these reasons they continue to hold the spirit of community, and being slotted into Master Plan designed by Council would not continue on ..well the same vibe. There is also a very real risk of what would happen once these pesky rule breaking gardens were out of the way Community gardens are place based and while the community may shift with the space it would in so many ways mean starting again. It would not be the same, if it in fact continues. Im sure many West Enders walk past Jane St and remember activities and projects held there and former gardeners who first turned that hard dry sandy dirt, and remember them and how pleased theyd be to see it in its flourishing state.
