24.01.2022 Here's the poem we shared together in church on Sunday March 22. It's by DANUSHA LAMÉRIS. Small Kindnesses Ive been thinking about the way, when you walk down a crowded aisle, people pull in their legs... to let you by. Or how strangers still say bless you when someone sneezes, a leftover from the Bubonic plague. Dont die, we are saying. And sometimes, when you spill lemons from your grocery bag, someone else will help you pick them up. Mostly, we dont want to harm each other. We want to be handed our cup of coffee hot, and to say thank you to the person handing it. To smile at them and for them to smile back. For the waitress to call us honey when she sets down the bowl of clam chowder, and for the driver in the red pick-up truck to let us pass. We have so little of each other, now. So far from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange. What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these fleeting temples we make together when we say, Here, have my seat, Go aheadyou first, I like your hat. See more

23.01.2022 Christmas Message from the Spire Community Manager - There are three things to say about Christmas at the Spire Community. First, to the staff and volunteers, you have done wonders. By the time we close for Christmas we will have served 8,000 or more meals, and supported about 1200 individuals and families through Emergency Relief and Low Income Support Christmas Hampers and Community Food Day. We have provided English lessons to about 30 people every week and given opportu...nities to volunteers to develop new skills and confidence and of course they have repaid in spades. All this does not include the other ways in which we change lives such as through our work with the Circle of Hope, the Anti-Poverty Network and Jobs Café. It is a privilege to be part of this seemingly endless well of compassion and creativity. Second, Christmas here is lovely. The Volunteer Dinner was great and the ESL Christmas Celebration is always a highlight. The Church of course is also offering Carols and Celebrations. But finally Christmas is a stark reminder of everything that is wrong with Australia. Christmas shines a harsh light on loneliness and illness and family conflict. As we know cause of most of those problems is poverty. We do a great job of responding to the symptoms of poverty here at the Spire Community . We need to get better at focusing on the causes of poverty. So if you are lucky enough to have the money and friends and family around you enjoy! And if you are not so lucky hold on. We will be back in Janaury. I always regret not being here for people over Christmas when they need us. Maybe we can fix that next year! - David Winderlich

18.01.2022 Friends, no doubt you are finding your newsfeed filled with cancellations and closures due to Covid 19 at the moment. While the Spire Community will do its best to provide essential services a lot of things are going to change to keep you safe. Tomorrow the Community Support Program will be distributing free fruit and veg to our current list of recipients as usual and cafe will have a good nutritious meal that can be taken away, and we will have some takeaway food on Friday a...s well.... but we sadly won't be able to gather to chat or drink coffee or craft or all those fun things we are used to doing together. We will be reducing the number of people in our Emergency Relief office. And there will other changes over the next week. Just for a while. We are developing some fun ways for us to gather online and and we will remain connected emotionally...if not physically. This too shall pass and we shall be together again with gusto!! Thankyou for your understanding x
