06.01.2022 As musicians, we all face challenges. Some are physical, some psychological, but the most difficult barriers to break through are those we place in front of ourselves. After speaking recently to an adult beginner guitarist, I was drawn to write about the indomitable capacity for evolution born in the human spirit, and to emphasize what can be achieved when we let go of any fears of failure, accept ourselves as we are, and believe in our ability to achieve our dreams. I'd like... to briefly write about 2 amazing musicians who faced challenges most of us would see as insurmountable. Tony Iommi, who lost the tips of 2 fingers from his fretting hand in an industrial accident at 17 years old, And Django Reinhardt, who lost the use of 2 fingers from his fretting hand in a fire at 18 years old. What makes these guitarists remarkably inspiring, in my opinion, goes beyond the fact that these crippling injuries did not end their playing careers. Through determination and innovation, they not only preserved as musicians, but each crafted their unique approach to playing into styles which are still emulated today, more than half a century on. Using plastic caps on the tips of his 2 injured fingers, Tony Iommi realized he could no longer form complex jazz shapes, and so focused on playing using 5th chords (powerchords) and pentatonic riffs. This is essentially the style that shaped the famous Black Sabbath sound, and has earned Tony the title of Godfather of heavy metal. Django Reinhardt worked relentlessly to build up the fluid speed in his 2 working fingers required to play the blindingly fast arpeggios he used to form the base of what would become the quintessential Gypsy Jazz sound. His pioneering work still gets a nod from most jazz musicians today. Just look at the number of masterclasses and articles written to help students learn and better understand this astounding style of music. I don't pretend to fully understand what these men went through, or to know what they thought, but surely at some point during their recoveries they must have had to let go of what had happened to them, what might have been, and what they thought they had lost, in order to focus on what they can do in the present moment. Using this as a starting point, and maintaining a clear and open mind focused on the present, each of these inspiring men has earned their place as pioneering icons in the history of guitar. When we accept ourselves as we are, and with determination, focus and persistence, surely not even we are fully aware of the extent of our capabilities.
