24.01.2022 Lovely to welcome a potential new member, Elisabeth, who visited our rehearsal on Tuesday night....and another two ladies will visit next week! We have so much fun at rehearsals and learn and grow musically with Karen at the helm, and Amy on piano!

24.01.2022 Counting the days now until our first rehearsal for 2019... Tuesday 29th cant come quickly enough! Hopefully everyone has had a wonderful break! Two lovely members, Davina and Maria, have moved interstate and will be very much missed this year. We wish them every happiness in their new locations, and look forward to hearing about the choirs they will hopefully join!

21.01.2022 So just over 2 weeks before our big charity concert. We are putting the final polish on each song at rehearsals. It is going to be great!

20.01.2022 Thank you to Woodlands Retirement Village for welcoming us so warmly, on what was a very damp Sunday afternoon. We had so much fun performing for you and look forward to a return visit in the future.

20.01.2022 Who had a bedspread like this?

19.01.2022 A fun rehearsal on Tuesday night, as we celebrated the end of another wonderful term of singing....and it was supper night! Thank you to Rosemary who had baked and decorated a lovely cake to celebrate 20 years of membership of Spirit of Sydney Chorus for at least seven current members! Have a good mid-year break everyone!

19.01.2022 Great rehearsal this week, a good mix of polishing songs we know and note bashing some new songs. I think the Sister Act song and the Singing in the Rain one are going to be good for our major concert in May with work. What fun!

19.01.2022 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWbncf9HN_Y Military Wives Choir is a movie which will be released in Australia soon. The distributors invited 2 members from Sydney choirs to a complimentary viewing of the movie last night in the city. Marian and I took up their kind offer Earlier in the day I googled the Military Wives Choir and found this wonderful documentary about the beginning of the choir. It is very moving in places but absolutely worth watching when you have the ti...me. The movie was great as well! Cheers, Sue

17.01.2022 We always knew we had fun at rehearsals now we know why!!

16.01.2022 Very mixed feelings about putting our home on the market today, it is more real now that we are leaving.

13.01.2022 The Spirit of Sydney Chorus spent yesterday afternoon performing at the Alan Walker Retirement Village. While it was damp and cold outside, we always receive such a warm welcome from the community. Ive trawled through my past diaries, and think Ive found our first visit to our friends in Carlingford, in 2009! So thats ten years of mutual enjoyment; usually a mid-year performance and always a Christmas concert later in the year. Over the years, Alan Walker residents have been so welcoming to us; many familiar faces are still in the audience; always new faces and some members of the community no longer able to attend. We thank them for their welcome and their appreciation of what we do....and especially we thank them for the lovely afternoon tea always provided for us!

13.01.2022 Another great Zoom choir last night....it has taken a bit of getting used to, but any opportunity to see the happy faces of many of our members is wonderful. Also great to learn a new piece of music during this time! Many thanks to Karen, Laura and Louise for all their work in making this happen! (apologies for quality of photo!)

12.01.2022 Spent a lovely winter afternoon entertaining the residents of Lutanda Manor at Pennant Hills. They were a great audience and enjoyed our mix of golden oldies and some fun newer pieces of music. A good time was had by all! :)

12.01.2022 A few members of the Spirit of Sydney have taken part in several Flash Mobs at The City Recital Centre. Twice weve been fortunate to be led by Richard Gill...wished we could have been there to pay tribute to this humble and lovely man today

10.01.2022 Interesting article on the benefits and joys of belonging to a choir

10.01.2022 After our recent performance at Woodlands, we received the most beautiful thank you card, overflowing with such warm thoughts and wishes from Melveene Hunt on behalf of the residents. The wording and sentiments were so sweet and heartfelt we include some here...."thank you for our choir and lovely selection of songs; thank you for Karens direction and Amys piano playing; hopes that we will be blessed as we have blessed our audience; thanks that our faces all show love when were performing." And yes, Melveene, love and music do make the world go around!

09.01.2022 Hi Ladies, Sorry I will not be at rehearsals for a few weeks as we are into dress rehearsals for the Mikado now. I certainly miss seeing you, keep up the good work.

09.01.2022 Another wonderful year of friendship and singing is nearly over. Weve enjoyed performing at some regular venues and loved the opportunity to spread our joy with some new audiences. I think our favourite for the year was our recent performance at Royal North Shore Hospital...so well received and such a joy for us all! Our abundant thanks to Karen Bruce, our wonderful MD, and of course, to Amy for her amazing accompaniment. Christmas greetings to all!

09.01.2022 Lovely to spend yesterday afternoon performing at the Hornsby Uniting Church, together with several voice students of our wonderful Musical Director, Karen Bruce. All the young people sang so confidently with a great repertoire of fabulous songs, and beautifully accompanied by Amy Putt on piano. Well done to all! It was a great afternoon!

09.01.2022 Great rehearsal last night, lots of work for our concert An Evening of Song in May and a lovely supper (as it was the first rehearsal of the month). We also welcomed a potential new member who came to try us out. What could be better

09.01.2022 The choir is performing tomorrow afternoon at Alan Walker Village, Carlingford, where we have been invited to sing for the residents twice a year, for many years! It is always such a pleasure and rewarding afternoon for us all. This time of year, of course, we include some of our Christmas repertoire....so on with our Christmas earrings and off we go!!

07.01.2022 Congratulations to everyone involved in the concert on Saturday night. This went off without a hitch, we had a full house (113 tickets sold) and made nearly $2,000 profit for charity. There are many people who worked hard behind the scenes to make this happen; I would like to thank Margaret for her work liaising with the church and all the last min. things she dealt with in her quiet, efficient way. Thank you to Jenny for her work on publicity and for getting her husband to... record the concert, which entailed a lot of moving of equipment and time spent, at both the last rehearsal and on the night, getting things right. It was also great to get help from Maria and Lynette who didnt sing on the night, so were able to do those tasks that the performers could not. Please post your own message here to say thank you to those I have missed, it defiantly took a community (choir) to pull this off. See more

07.01.2022 Hornsby Choirfest was great. So good to hear what other choirs get up to. Our performance was very lively and engaging as well as moving. Thanks to Melanie Wang for the photo.

06.01.2022 We had a few people missing at rehearsal tonight, some were away and the rain may have put other off coming out. But we made a good sound and did some great work. We sang Singing in the Rain standing outside (under cover) which gave it a whole new life (I was hoping to bump into Gene Kelly!). And we moved and danced about while getting to grips with Sister Act. We finished the night with a lovely supper and a chat (being the first Tuesday of the month) thank you to the ladies who put on such a lovey spread

06.01.2022 Looking forward to getting back to singing with all my lovely choir friends next Tuesday, 24 July. I hope everyone has enjoyed the winter break. Weve enjoyed stunning blue skies but it has been a wee bit chilly! See you all on Tuesday!

04.01.2022 We started rehearsal by singing Bumble Bee this week. This song is like Vegemite, you either love it or hate it. But we are trying to give it a chance. We then worked hard on some of our other new songs, building our repertoire for our big concert in May. I for one need to do some practice before next week!

03.01.2022 A lovely article in the SMH today celebrating 100 years of the Sydney Philharmonia Choir, written by Claire Duffy. Some highlights in the article which resonate for all choirs, including ours: "Science gives choral singing a big tick. It works you out, cheers you up and keeps you sane." "Singing enriches you way beyond the music. You always have somewhere to be, something to do and something to look forward to.....singing opens your heart. Singing eases pain and helps us heal. When you sing you feel alive."

03.01.2022 We had a really good work out at choir last night going over a couple of old songs, "Song for the Mira" & "Chiquitita" and a new one for us, "I will survive". Thank you Alison for doing a great job in leading us. It is amazing how quickly we can pick up on the music we have sung for a while. Thanks Rachel for playing the entire "Song for Mira" for us to record. It will help us when we practise during the week. It was also relaxing to just listen. Have a good week everyone!

03.01.2022 Our final performance for 2018 will be in the foyer of the Royal North Shore Hospital. The hospital has organised a week of musical performances and it is our pleasure to sing on Tues 11 December for one hour from 11am. A lovely way to end another fabulous year of song and friendship. Special thanks to Karen for her huge contribution to the choir; and warmest wishes to Rachel as she looks forward to welcoming a baby in 2019!

02.01.2022 Hi fellow music lovers, if you can come along to the 10th anniversary performance of Handles Messiah in Hornsby, that a few choir members are in, it would be great! https://www.facebook.com/events/370051667074868/?ti=icl

01.01.2022 We worked on I Believe at rehearsal this week, it has been quite a while since we sang this and I had forgotten how beautifully the Ave Maria weaves in and out of the tune. The wonderful high notes at the end are also a real bonus (you can tell I am Soprano 1 ). We then wanted to sing something upbeat so chose Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive. We know this one well so one of our Altos, Anne, had a go at conducting us; a great way to hear all the parts as a whole. A fun experience for all.
