20.01.2022 Further to the black and white image of the US Navy ammunition bunker on Aore Island, here's some video we shot of some of the bunkers as they are today. And they're not bats pouring out of the bunkers but tens of thousands of small birds.
12.01.2022 Before and after at Turtle Bay Airfield on Santo. The black and white shot was taken in December 1943, while the colour image was taken in October 2017. To try and give it some context, the dirt road crossing the bottom of the colour image is what’s left of the road that can be seen just below the main taxiway on the right of the black and white shot. The road between the end of the runway and the coast in the 1943 shot is now the East Coast Highway that takes you up to the north of Espiritu Santo including Champagne Beach and Port Olry.
09.01.2022 One of the naval ammunition storage bunkers on Aore Island, a 10 minute boat ride across from Santo. Many of these bunkers are still in place today in various locations close to the north side of Aore Island.
05.01.2022 The road bridge over the Sarakata River in Luganville, not far from where the South Pacific World War II Museum will be built, was originally constructed by US Seabees during World war II. During construction of the original bridge, a crane collapsed into the river. The black and white shot was taken moments after the collapse and you can see one of the Seabees being pulled from the river, while other personnel are diving under the river to free the crane operator. The colour photograph taken on our recent trip to Santo shows what’s left of the bridge pilings that can be seen in the original photograph.
