24.01.2022 Everyone has 5 senses, sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. Over the years we have been equipping computers with these senses, Sight with cameras, Hearing with microphones and touch with trackpads. Now the Massachusetts-based company C2Sense has invented a tiny chip that gives computers a sense of smell. The chip is being designed to help detect when fruit is ripening so that it wont cause other fruit to ripen. When fruit ripens it releases musky gas called ethylene, whic...h has been proven to speed up the ripening process on other fruits. The chip works off of a synthesized material that chemically reacts to ethylene by changing the conductivity depending on the amount of ethylene detected. The material can also be modified to detect other gases, such as the amines released by meat or ammonia, with their current prototype being able to detect up to four different types of gas on a single chip. The company’s goal is to make wireless sensor chips so cheap that they could be built into a product’s packaging, or incorporated into produce bags at the grocery store, without adding any noticeable cost at the register. Customers could then scan these chips with their phones to get a freshness reading. Now we just need a machine that can taste our food for us before we buy it.

21.01.2022 Today we received multiple emails from [email protected], an email address we do not have setup which had a word document attached. Other businesses all over Bundaberg have received similar emails from network.scanner with their own email address. This email is malicious and if you have received this email you should not open the attached word document. If the document is opened it will attempt to run Macros to install executables and edit Windows System files.... Because the malware is very new many anti-viruses aren't able to pick it up. The email structure is from a Ricoh MP C2003 scanner and it seems that many of the people receiving the emails were once in possession of a Ricoh scanner. It is speculated that older Ricoh scanners have been recovered and used their address books distribute the malware. All of the emails seem to say they are from <"RNP002673A5A8F3" (MP C2003).> which seems to be a fake MAC address and the Printer model, so blocking this string of text should help prevent receiving the email anymore. Please let others know to help prevent accidental openings of the emails, especially if they used to have a Ricoh MP C2003. A screenshot of the email is attached and you can also find an in depth report of the virus can be found here:https://www.hybrid-analysis.com//7bef957d947804a67c2067c6e

19.01.2022 Office lens is an app I have recently discovered that turns your smartphone into a smart scanner. By taking pictures of printed documents Office lens allows you to convert them into word documents or pdf files with searchable text, though you will need a Microsoft Account and OneNote to get the full experience. To use more detail, Office Lens has four capture modes, Document, Whiteboard, Photo and Business Card and . Document will help you get the most out of small words and ...details on a page. It's great for things like posters and restaurant menus. The Document can be saved to OneNote, OneDrive or to the phone as an image. So far most conversions have worked well, Word will type the letters it can find and try to keep close to the formatting, while pdf files will take the image and overlay text over it to make it searchable. Cursive can mess it up, pdf files will look alright but won't be searchable and word documents will just be a mess. Whiteboard is used to capture notes. Office Lens will adjust images so the background isn't too bright and the words are easier to read. It's an ideal setting for blackboards and sketches too. The image looks simpler but it is legible and even straighten it out if the picture was taken at an angle. Business Card lets you capture information off of, you guessed it, business cards. Office Lens will automatically extract the contact information from the card so it is easier to read and import into your contact list. You can save the contact into OneNote and after it has converted the info you can open the contact on your phone. As long as the picture has been taken properly I haven't had any misreads, though I'd be careful about cards with Cursive writing. Finally the Photo mode, which is really just a standard camera. You do get the ability to save straight to OneNote or OneDrive. You can decide you want to convert it to PDF or word anyway, but you can import any Photo from your gallery to convert, though it doesn't always work as well with imported images. The photo mode is a bit unnecessary but it isn't like it gets in the way of anything so its kind of a neutral feature, not really great, but not a=bad either. Overall, Offie Lens is a neat little app, I only got to try it out on android but the IOS version seems to have recently updated and has been working well for users. As a free app, it's worth keeping on your device if you can spare the space.

19.01.2022 Google.com, one of the most well know and constantly used domains, it must be worth millions or perhaps a billion or two, well ex-googler Sanmay Ved managed to snatch it up for US$12. Sanmay was browsing through google domains, Googles domain purchasing service, to see what was available, he reported to Business insider I used to work at Google so I keep messing around with the product. I type in Google.com and to my surprise it showed it as available,I thought it was some e...rror, but I could actually complete check out. After purchase Sanmay had full access to all the Webmaster functions for google.com, for 1 minute. Sanmay reported the purchase to Googles security team and the purchase was reversed, with a reimbursement of his $12, as well as $10000, which Sanmay has already donated to charity. Ved didn't care about the money, but he did find it worth It, At least I can now say I’m the man who owned Google.com for a minute. We're lucky that it was Sanmay the Good Samaritan that bought the site, otherwise who knows what havoc could of been wrought and for those of you who own domains, don't forget to renew them as soon as you can, because if someone buys yours, you may not be able to get it back.

18.01.2022 Tech Trivia- The Motion Picture Academy refused to nominate Tron (1982) for a special-effects award because, according to director Steven Lisberger, The Academy thought we cheated by using computers.

18.01.2022 Microsoft's digital assistant Cortana is going to take on it's competitors, Google Now and Siri, on their home turf. Cortana had a Beta for Android in August and has now making way onto IOS with invitations supposedly being sent out within weeks. Testers must fill out a Microsoft survey to become eligible, however the beta will only be available to those in the US and China. I have recently been trying out Cortana on my Windows 10 PC, although it isn't available in Australia ...yet, you can change your region settings to make Cortana available on your PC. Cortana has worked quite well on Windows 10, being able to understand me clearly, even from my older Microphone. However Microsoft have tried to make it clear these are Beta versions on Android and IOS and will be missing some of the features. But overall it is god to see it making progress and hopefully Cortana will make her way over to Australia.. eventually.

15.01.2022 Today we spend a minute of silence in honour of those who gave their lives in the line of duty. 97 years ago, on the 11th of November 1918, we saw the end of World War 1. November 11 was named Armistice Day, but after the end of World War 2 in 1945, the Australian and British governments changed the name to Remembrance Day as an appropriate title for a day which would commemorate all war dead. In Australia the 11th of November is a day where we can remember those who died i...n war, where we will have a one minute's silence at 11:00am and wear the Red Poppy, which has special significance for Australians, for each year, the red poppies were among the first to flower in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium in the First World War. In soldiers’ folklore, the vivid red of the poppy came from the blood of their comrades soaking the ground Australians wear a Red Poppy on Remembrance Day for three reasons. Firstly, in memory of the sacred dead who rest in Flanders’ Fields. Secondly, to keep alive the memories of the sacred cause for which they laid down their lives; and thirdly, as a bond of esteem and affection between the soldiers of all Allied nations and in respect for France, our common battleground. Lest we forget.

15.01.2022 As many of you probably know, Wednesday was Back to the Future day, otherwise know as the day when the DeLorean let Marty Mcfly loose into the distant future, filled with hover boards, flying cars and Self lacing Nike shoes. Well it seems the future is a tad different than predicted, however we aren't far off a few things, Nike have developed a working Pair of the Air mags, though they're not released yet and there are many working hover board prototypes being developed. Wel...l many businesses have been celebrating BTTF Day, such as Microsoft. If you are to go to Microsoft.com and search "OUTATIME" you will get a little clip and a nice page showing off some of Microsoft's Hardware with its older counterparts. A fun little thing Microsoft have done to celebrate and the best part, the page can be viewed in 3D, all you need is a classic pair of red blue 3D glasses. See more

12.01.2022 Minecraft is a popular game worldwide, especially amongst younger children who enjoy creating their own worlds or exploring the worlds created by others. A team of chemists have decided to make use of the games popularity to try and educate children about the world of bio-chemistry. The team who are from the University of Hull in the UK have created a custom map called MolCraft that show of stick models of molecules and also has a bunch of quizzes and puzzles to explore and ...solve. The team have tried to present them in a fun way that will keep kids engaged. You can download the map from the link below, or you can join their public server at: [ molcraft.nitrous.it ] the site also has instructions on how to open the world in Minecraft. I think its a great idea to help get kids interested in learning and I hope that there will be similar ideas for other studies. http://www2.hull.ac.uk/science/scienceoutreach/MolCraft.aspx

12.01.2022 Last months Back to the Future day has brought interest back to many of the iconic moments Marty experienced in 2015, even now there are things popping up in homage to the movies. Universal pictures have also joined in with the fun and have made a trailer for Jaws 19, the movie that was supposed to be in cinemas, October 21. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pl092whRLlI

11.01.2022 Beware Jerusalem on Friday the 13th! The Jerusalem virus, which is also called the Friday the 13th virus was a nasty one. The virus activates every Friday the 13th and slows down the user's computer and deletes any program that it runs on that day. Although the virus had been around since 1987, it was mid January 1989 that it became one of the most famous early examples of a computer virus making headlines, The Friday the 13th virus was a common virus at the time and it spawned a large number of variants, including one that attacked computers on Sunday instead of Friday. Luckily, today the virus and its variants are considered obsolete, so it's not something you need to worry about, its all the newer ones you should be careful of.

10.01.2022 Have you ever wished that you could just walk into your home or office and your phone would magically charge up? No messing around with cables or charging pads? Then the wonders of uBeam charging is something you might like. Simply put, uBeam is a way to wirelessly charge your phone with no contact required. uBeam is a newer form of wireless charging where unlike induction charging where your phone would need to be in contact with the charging plate, uBeam broadcasts energy ...to your phone wherever it may be. This is achieved via ultrasonic transduction, where the transmitter takes power from a power outlet and then convert it into ultrasonic sound waves, the transmitter then beams the vibrations towards a device with a receiver, such as a phone with a wireless charging case, then has the receiver convert the ultrasound back into energy to charge the device. The transmitter also retargets the receivers as they move around to maximise the energy being received. uBeam wireless charging is an amazing development in technology. The charging speeds are very close to what you would get plugging in via cable, the receivers are cheap, with pricing looking to be around the $50 mark as well as slim so that it wont bulk up your phone too much. Most importantly though, its safe. uBeam has undergone a lot of testing to ensure there are no adverse side effects. Although there is no release date as of yet, once it is completed uBeam will have a significant impact on how technology is used worldwide.

10.01.2022 Hand draw animation was an impressive feat, requiring hundreds if not thousands of frames being individually drawn for so that the image would flow fluidly without stuttering. New way of animation have been made streamlining the process while also making a new design aesthetic that can be seen in modern Pixar movies. However what tools are available for those who would like to bring back the look and style of hand drawn animations akin to The Old Looney Tunes and Original Sno...w White. Well the team at Microsoft Research, along with the University of Hong Kong and the University of Tokyo, have created a proof-of-concept Technology that will help artists breath life back into this old style. The "Autocomplete hand-drawn animations software was shown at the Siggraph Asia conference, showing the off how it could assist artists by helping predict the next frame of the animation based on what the artist as already drawn. The tool can also fill in the gaps between two images and create the motions it would assume to happen between the two frames and also has colour support remembering the certain shades and hues that were used and replicates them. If this tool reaches the market, it could rekindle hand drawn animations in the movie and TV industry.

Caution is advised for all emails you receive and it is important to make sure you know the sender and what should be in the email.

08.01.2022 Kids and adults alike worldwide enjoy playing Minecraft and because of that it seems to be turning into a to to get interested in learning. Well this time Minecraft has been brought in to help teach the basics of coding, with the #HourOfCode from code.org that provides a bunch of short programing puzzles. The game provides a set of connectable pieces as stand in for code, such as "move forward" and "place block" players have to navigate around using these commands to achieve ...goals. All the pieces get explanations on how they work, which will be useful when you get if statements and loops for those new to code. At the end you can view what the full set would look like written in code. The game is fairly basic and those with coding knowledge will probably find it over easy, but it is a good way to learn some of the basics. If you found you enjoyed these types of coding puzzles and/or would like to try some more difficult ones, The Resource Machine is a full game built around similar game mechanics that provides more complicated puzzles as the game progresses, but being a full game it does cost around US$10 on steam. https://code.org/mc

07.01.2022 A Microsoft patch has come out that will cause outlook to crash when opening certain emails and then be unable to open. The crash occurs when outlook tries to look at HTML emails that have links in them. The worst of it is that when you try to reopen outlook it will try to show you the last email you had open, which will cause it to crash again. Luckily you can remedy the issue by uninstalling the patch from your PC. To uninstall the patch, go into the start menu and open th...e Control Panel, then you need to go into programs and features. On the left side of the screen you will see a link to "view installed updates" go into there and you will get a list of updates that have been installed. If you use the search in the top right to find update "KB3097877" and uninstall it. If search doesn't work you may have to look through them manually. The uninstall can take up to 10 minutes but afterwards outlook should open fine. if you cant find the update then you may be having a different issue with outlook.

06.01.2022 Everyone with Office 2010 should check their Outlook now to see if they have been effected by a faulty update from Microsoft. Some users may have noticed when they opened their Outlook some thing would be different, the view changed and missing the reading pane, or the lack of sounds on alerts. If you look to the top of the window and see if (Safe Mode) is written at the top. The update from Microsoft, KB3114409, was intended to prevent Outlook opening in safe mode accidental...ly but has apparently done the opposite by making outlook always open in safe mode, meaning that many features will not be working correctly. To fix the issue close outlook down and search for "View installed updates" in the start menu, go into there and you will get a list of updates that have been installed. If you use the search in the top right to find update "KB3114409" and uninstall it. If search doesn't work you may have to look through them manually. After uninstalling the update outlook should be working fine.

05.01.2022 Curved displays and wearables are becoming a big thing in the portable device market, Samsung have been thoroughly invested in both, having the curved edges on the Samsung Galaxy Edges and the range of Samsung Gears with the Gear S fits into both camps being a Wearable Smart Watch with a curved screen, whereas Apple's closest brush with curved displays seems to be limited to the iPhone 6 infamous bend, but I digress. As seems to be the trend nowadays where the big companies s...imple, functioning devices with new technology, small independent businesses are experimenting with more out there ideas, Wove is one of these products. Created by Polyera, Wove is a wearable and flexible "computer" though it seems to function more like a smartwatch. Unlike many of the curved displays which are curved into a fixed position, Wove can bend and flex like paper without damaging the display , which is made possible by Polyera’s patented digital fabric technology, a proprietary flexible electronics platform the company has been using to develop flexible transistors and displays since the company’s beginnings. Wove can be configured to show and use different apps and information, notifications can be read easily at day or night with a 1040 pixel by 200 pixel, multi-touch screen display that uses E-ink technology similar to Kindle. Wove comes with its own Android based OS, Wove OS which allows it to connect to smartphones via Bluetooth and is speculated to have many of the standard smartwatch features, i.e. Viewing Texts and notifications, phone alarm, etc. Wove is predicated to be available to consumers mid 2016 and although pricing is unknown, it has been said it will be cheaper than the low cost apple watch. You can check out more about Wove on their website below, though their website layout is quite, unique. http://www.wove.com/

03.01.2022 Apple are building up the hype for the iPad Pro by releasing a handful of advertisements for the device, which is the "Biggest iPad yet". The iPad Pro seem to be Apples response to Microsoft's success with their Surface. The pricing however is a bit on the heavier side, starting at the Wi-Fi only model at $1249 with 32GB of storage and then scales upwards up to $1699 for the SIM-enabled model at 128GB of storage space. That isn't including the $165 Apple pencil or the $269 Smart Keyboard. The iPad Pro does come with a 12.9-inch Retina display and 64-bit A9X chip, the iPad Pro is Apple's biggest and fastest tablet yet. The ad shows off the Display and the ability to run two full iPad apps side-by-side. The iPad Pro is looking like it is going to be a great device, but pricing will probably prevent people purchasing it.

02.01.2022 The Oculus Rift, known as the device that brought Virtual Reality back into fashion after some has finally escaped the Dev market and is now a full release ready for Pre-Order at US$600. Some of you may know about the development cycle of the Oculus Rift, after a successful Kickstarter campaign back in late 2012, backers were give an early prototype, now referred to as Dev Kit 1 (DK1) and ten sold on the website publicly for $300, at around 4-5 units per minute for the first ...day. DK1 was released with the intention of allowing developers to add compatibility for their games before the full release however people all over were buying DK1 to play their games. The Oculus showed off two more Prototypes that were not available to the public in June 2013 and January 2014, adding HD resolutions and better head tracking respectively. In March 2014 the Development Kit 2 was announced and shipped later in March. DK2 had had several improvements over DK1 from the unreleased Prototypes, with a higher-resolution display, higher refresh rate, positional tracking, a detachable cable and no longer needed an external control box. September 2014 Oculus presented a new prototype codenamed Crescent Bay, with greater resolution than the DK2, a lower weight, built-in audio and 360-degree tracking. It was then on May 6 2015 that Oculus announced that the full consumer version of the rift will be shipping in the first Quarter of 2016 with an improved version of the Crescent Bay Prototype, featuring per-eye displays running at 90 Hz with a higher combined resolution than DK2, 360 degree positional tracking, integrated audio, a vastly increased positional tracking volume, and a heavy focus on consumer ergonomics and aesthetics. Oculus also announced the day before Pre-Orders that the Original Kickstarter backers who received DK1 Would also get a Special Kickstarter edition of the Oculus Rift. Pre-Orders are now Open for the consumer version on the website and next time we will have a rundown of the what you get with the consumer version.

01.01.2022 The Lytro Immerge is a revolutionary new camera the can create VR recordings move around in. The Lytro uses light field technology to provide more freedom of movement than a static capture device. The Lytro Immerge will get you roughly a cubic meter of area that you can fully capture the set of rays in and then, from a consumer experience, you’ll be able to move around within that volume and have the world react accordingly. The Lytro Immerge is not something that is being ai...med at consumers, but for larger productions and the price tag supports this stance with the purchase price being estimated at over $100,000 but most production companies would be renting the device though that also has been estimated at around $1,000 a day. The Lytro looks like it will bring some amazing things into VR media and if you would like to know more, you can watch a video at their website to get a better understanding of how it works. https://www.lytro.com/immerge
