08.01.2022 Do I really need to get my dog groomed over winter? The short answer is, YES! Definitely!!... Or your pup could potentially end up with this coat when it comes time to cut it back! And the long answer is, Do you wash and groom your hair over the cold winter months? What about your kids? Do you let your daughters hair go over the winter months with no washing or brushing? Of course not!! Because you love her right? And you dont want her to be uncomfortable or in pain. Why would it be any different with your beloved pet? Arent they part of your family too? (It doesnt even have to be a short back and sides every time, though Id still recommend that if youve got an inside dog, especially if theyre not getting regular, quality brushing every few days.) Because, lets face it. We as humans dont like to be cold during winter! So we put the heating on or get the fire going to keep comfortable when its cold outside. But have you ever looked at your inside dog during those winter months and thought about how THEY might be feeling? Especially if theyve got their summer coat on because you didnt remember to get them to the groomer after the hotter months and so, theyre not only dragging their constantly growing winter coat around through your toasty warm house, theyve also got to deal with their long summer coat as well! Have a think about what you do in winter when you walk into a warm building... You take your coat or jumper off right? Because its hot and youll overheat yeah? Now think about what your dog does when they walk into your heated house. They probably do the pancake on the tiles or cement, because thats all they CAN do! Im thinking theyd be pretty hot and uncomfortable and trying to get relief wherever they can and yet I still get people come to me in August / September when it starts to warm up again saying that they didnt want to get their dog groomed in Winter because theyd be cold. REALLY? I mean, cmon! I can guarantee theyd rather be cold to start with and be able to snuggle up to their humans to get warm, or shock horror! From this post from Wentworth Falls Animal Hospital: Historically ticks were usually found in warm coastal areas, but in recent years weve seen a significant increase in patients suffering tick paralysis in the Blue Mountains. ... Signs to look out for include incoordination, weakness in the hind limbs, collapse, vomiting or retching, change of bark or meow, or difficulty breathing. A short coat is best in this weather anyway for comfort and easy home maintenance but this added tick threat is another excellent reason for a short back and sides right now - a lot easier to see if your pampered pooch have picked up any hitchhikers on their daily walks!!
