24.01.2022 We know you all have lots of questions about independent assessments. How they are going to work. What they will mean for you.... And why they are being introduced in such a big hurry. In the last week we have heard all your questions and concerns. Now its time for the Minister to hear them too. So if you have a question about how this is all going to work NOW is the time to speak up. We know everyone has so much on their plate with COVID19 and lockdowns and everything else. So we have done the hard work for you. We have a form on our website for you to email the Minister. You can send him your own questions and concerns or you can just borrow the ones we have put together. But whichever way you do it - it's time for the Minister to come clean and tell people with disability and their families what they want to know. And we want straight answers not spin. And most important of all no more changes without first talking to the people who matter most. #NDISMakeItWork PS And if we could ask one last favour - please share and help us spread the word so the Minister hears from as many people as possible. You can find the form on our website - https://everyaustraliancounts.com.au/questions-for-ministe/ (Image description: A photo of the Every Australian Counts website. There is a green background at the top with a picture of Minister Robert in the bottom right hand corner. The text reads "Take action: ask NDIS Minister Stuart Robert these questions about the new NDIS Independent Assessments")

21.01.2022 A common misconception is that Key Word Sign and sign language (e.g. AUSLAN) are the same thing. They are NOT the same. AUSLAN is the native language of the dea...f community in Australia. It is a rich and complex language, developed over many centuries by the deaf community. It has its own grammatical structure so signs are in a different order to spoken language. Key Word Sign is a communication strategy for adults and children who can usually hear, but have difficulty speaking. It borrows signs from AUSLAN, but it is not a language in itself. Only the key words are signed, and speech is also used. This difference is important to know because of the long history of misunderstanding of sign language by hearing people. Please share this post around to raise awareness of this difference, and to show appreciation of the deaf community and their beautiful language!

20.01.2022 Parents and carers are being urged to keep their children off social media, including Tik Tok, Twitter and Instagram, over the coming days because a distressing... video has been circulating. 19.01.2022 Plan Renewal, Rollover, or Extension ARGH!!!! What do they all mean? WORTH SAVING and SHARING: End of plan reviews 4 types and what you need to know when y...our plan is about to finish! Firstly, a plan rollover can mean *any* of the types on new plans Ive explained below in this post, so we are just not gonna use that word (rollover) anymore, and instead well use the more official NDIS terms for the different types. This post is about the options for when your plan dates are ending. This post does not cover when you ask for a review because you are unhappy with your fairly new plan (review of a reviewable decision) or when you are requesting a change of circumstances review. 1. Plan Auto-Extension A genuine plan extension is the default option and what happens when your plan is set to expire and no one at the NDIA or the LAC has done anything to get you a new plan. When you get a Plan Extension, it is usually automatic for one year (though it can sometimes be one month or anything in between). A plan extension does does give you a new plan, and in fact, the pdf plan you can download on the NDIS MyPlace portal doesnt change one little bit. But, youll notice in the other parts of your portal, that the end date has changed, and a pro-rata amount of funding has been added. Plan extensions usually happen when there hasnt been any other human intervention, or sometimes when a planner is working on your new plan but its not quite finished yet, so they add a month or two to your old plan to give them time to do their work. If you have a Plan Extension, the money left in your plan remains, and extra money is put in as pro rata. An example: If you have an old $12,000 plan which expires today, and you still have $2,000 left that you didnt use: if your plan is extended by a year, there should now be a new plan end date of 14th August 2021, and there should be around $14,000 in that plan (and the start date won't change from your old plan!). And yes, you can still claim for stuff dated anytime between August 14 2019 and August 14 2021. (before you ask, Im not you if the extra funds take into account the July price increases or not, sorry!) Often the Agency uses these Extension Plans as a stop-gap, until they get your new plan all sorted and approved. Under the NDIS Act (the law!) an NDIS plan never ends until it is replaced with a new one, or the participant exits the scheme, and thats why we have Plan Auto-Extensions to be rid of those awful plan gaps we used to see, which were always against the law. Grrr... 2. Plan Renewal A Plan Renewal is when you get a whole new plan (usually one or two years long) which is basically a repeat of your current, about to expire old plan. This generally needs you, the participant, to approve it. This can be a great option for people who are happy with their old plan, and dont want to be assed going through a full plan review. These Renewal Plans *are* a whole new plan, so *none* of the leftover funds from your old plan are available for supports and services dated during the new plan dates. The new plan usually starts when the old plan was set to end, but sometimes planners bring this forward a bit sooner, which can be frustrating if youve been saving your funds to get something at the end of your old plan. So if youre talking to an LAC or planner and are keen for a Renewal Plan, make sure to ask them to wait until youve been able to purchase that larger end of plan thing. And if youre not confident about them holding off, then jump in and get that service/support sorted as soon as you can! When this Renewal Plan starts, you will still be able to makes claims for things you bought during the dates of the old plan from the old plan (before the new plan start date) for up to 90 days on the portal (for self managers), and Plan Managers should be able to do the same. You should also get a whole new pdf plan to download in the NDIS MyPlace portal with a new start and new end date. 3. Light Touch Plan Renewal This one is pretty much the same as the full Renewal Plan (#2 above), except a planner or an LAC might have a chat with you, often on the phone or sometimes even via email, in what feels like a review-lite meeting. The planner or LAC will just check in if there are any relatively easy changes that need to be made. You might find that your plan funds increase due to this chat, but you might also find you lose some funding an example might be someone who has already had SLES funding for two years, so it is left off of the Light Touch Plan Renewal. One typical change for a Light Touch Plan Renewal, is the recent change to where ADE (Supported Employment) funds go in your Plan: they are now put in your more flexible Core funds bucket, and are no longer put in your Capacity Building buckets. Another more obvious example is that equipment that youve already received during the current plan isnt going to be repeated and funded again in the new Renewal Plan. 4. Full Plan Review This is the regular full plan review meeting on phone or in person where you go through *all* the stuff with an LAC, ECEI partner or planner, and they build you a whole new plan. For these reviews, youll generally want/need to provide therapist reports and other evidence of your support needs, your carer statement and all that stuff. Generally, young children will nearly always get a full plan review, and no Renewal Plan options, as little tackers needs are pretty changeable through early intervention. This also often applies where a participant has a plan the Agency thinks was well funded for a specific time-limited purpose (or therapy program, for example), and for folks in this boat, youre also unlikely to be offered a Renewal Plan. So, how do you get the type of review you want? Have a think about which of the above options will work for you. Once youve decided, and youre maybe two or so months out from the end of your current plan, call your local LAC, or call (1800 800 110) or email the NDIS on [email protected] and let them know what youd like. There are no guarantees that you will get your choice, of course, but theres probably no harm in giving it a crack. And don't forget, if your new Plan doesn't give you what you need, you can always ask for a Review of a Reviewable Decision (also known as a RORD or S100 Review) for all new Plan, except where there is an extension plan (in which case you could potentially ask for a Change of Circumstances review) Wishing you all the best! Sorry this is so messy, and long. This post is copyright of The Growing Space 2020, and were thrilled for you to share it, with credit and no edits, here on Facebook. if you want to share it anywhere else, we request that you ask us for permission. 18.01.2022 April 30 2012. We fought for the NDIS. And won. Now we are fighting to get it working the way it should. The way it was intended.

18.01.2022 The thought process described here is a big part our approach to participation goals. If you can kick a soccer ball do we stop there? No! We want to wirk with your preferences, and the barriers and facilitators to get you playing in a soccer game with your mates. And not just in a nice day! We want you comfortable to join in when the ground is muddy or the suns in your eyes. Often we work with kids, families, coaches, or the team to work out alternatives that optimise independence and get everyone involved. Its often really creative work, and kids often come up with the best ideas themselves when we help them work through it. Read more about participation here: https://www.splashphysiotherapy.com//Participation-is-the- And give Asphyxia a follow, shes an incredibly talented author, artist, educator.... many skills!

17.01.2022 Ive been seeing so many friends seriously beating themselves up because they arent maximizing their time in quarantine by organizing their closets, repainti...ng, developing a side hustle, becoming a piano virtuoso, exercising themselves into a lucrative career as a swimsuit model, etc. Everybody! Seriously. Stop. And breathe. If youre feeling adrift, theres a reason. Im about to drop some first semester nursing school on yall. Its Maslows Hierarchy of Needs. Humans have basic requirements (the bottom of the pyramid) like food, water, air, shelter, sleep, etc. The biological basics. If those are met, then the next rung of the ladder is Safety and Security. If we feel safe and secure, then we can climb up and start on our Love and Belonging needs and on up the ladder we go until finally at the very tippy-top is SELF-ACTUALIZATION which would entail all of the cool aforementioned activities. The catch is, you cannot level up until the needs at the current level are fulfilled. If the needs remain unfulfilled, we remain stuck on our current level until the situation changes. Friends, in the midst of a pandemic, we are dwelling in the basement of Maslows pyramid. How in the heck do you think youre going to kick butt at the highest levels when we cant even find toilet paper for Petes sake. You physiologically and psychologically arent built to live your best life right now. Your only job is to live a life right now. A luxury that is being denied many which increases the pressure to really make every day count. But listen. Every day you are here counts. Every breath you take counts. Are you eating, drinking water, and sleeping at all these days? If so, that is a triumph right now. Cut yourself ALL THE SLACK. Focus on the bottom level. Are you showering? Eating a vegetable once in a while? Getting some sunshine and fresh air? Keeping some semblance of a sleep schedule? Start there. And be extra gentle and abundantly gracious with yourself. Well get through this. And right now, getting through is absolutely enough. I love you all. Hang in there. XXOO, Rachel TL;DR: Be kind to yourself.

16.01.2022 It's quite popular for parents who don't sign themselves to teach their babies some signs. This means babies can communicate before they are able to speak. This... lesson and the next two have signs that are helpful when communicating with young children, though they are also good signs for anyone to know. When I taught in a kindergarten, these were the most helpful words that allowed us to communicate with very young children. Vocab: Food Drink Milk More Finish Sleep (I show you two signs for this) Awake/Wake up Yes No Finish and more are the most useful signs - as these are abstract concepts that children often want to communicate but cannot. At a meal time, always ask if your child has finished, using the sign. If they haven't, sign 'more'. When they do finish, confirm it by signing 'finish' yourself. By doing this every time, your child will quickly learn the meaning of the words. I should have included the sign for 'toilet'. Luckily you don't need a video for that. 15.01.2022 NDIS INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENTS It is currently YOUR CHOICE if you accept an independent assessment or not. If you choose to have one done, it will inform your NDIS planning process. We have concerns regarding the tools used, experience and qualifications of the independent assessors, and their ability to understand your goals, ability and needs in a short time frame. We are involved in advocacy around this. Feel free to discuss this with your physio if you are offered an independent assessment. We can share what we now so far so you can make the choice that suits your family best.

13.01.2022 NDIS National Disability Insurance Scheme This just isnt true. Allied health professionals working with participants / would be participants already use internationally recognised, evidence based and consistent assessment, which provide Ip to date and complete assessment of functional capacity. The wirk is already done, its called providing evidence based best practice care. All we do is then put that into laymans terms in a report for the NDIA because the planners / del...egates rarely have the education to interpret scores themselves. In addition, we highlight the individual, what matters to them, in all the different contexts of their lives, and how the formal assessments relate to their participation goals. We are bound by Australian law to provide true, accurate, ethical reporting. The NDIA is adding bureaucracy layers and poor snapshot assessments that will - cost extra unnecessary money - not meet the individuals needs - attempt to use one size fits all which will leave some participants without medded funds - put a heap of stress on participants and their families - STILL require the reports from allied health professionals and medicos who can provide the detail and context - not out he participant at the centre of decision making - not believe the participant when they describe their situation and goals - move even further away from the insurance model towards the Centrelink DSP model - gut key principles the NDIS was founded upon We see you We see this cost cutting measure We see these posts trying to allay fears as you see participants and AHPs expressing their fears And we see through these reassurances We know you didnt consult with Disabled people / organisations / allied health professional organisations, and we know that we are al strongly advocating against this change, and we know the Greens has joined in

10.01.2022 So this is exciting! Pools due to open from Monday 9th November! Now we just need to wait to see what availability the swimming pools have for us, as they are allowed only 20 in the pool at one time and have lots of swimming lessons to fit in. We'll be in touch with all of our Splash families first, and then we'll open up any remaining places to the waiting list. As restrictions continue to ease, the numbers allowed in pools will rise, and we'll have increased availability. ... We'll keep Splash families informed. If you're on the waiting list, hold tight. Thanks everyone! See more

10.01.2022 We are so excited to be back in the pool! Here’s photos from Shayna’s first child back in the water. We’ll share pics from Alex when he joins in later this week. It is so great to see your smiling faces, to see how you’ve grown, and to meet some babies in person for the first time! Prepare for more happy photo spam this week We have to give up some things (face masks, we have fewer toys to play with) but it’s worth it to be back in the pool with you!

05.01.2022 How do you communicate with a deaf person? If I tell you Im deaf, that doesnt actually tell you anything about me. For instance, it doesnt tell you how I com...municate. Maybe I use Auslan (Australian sign language). Maybe I cant sign at all. Maybe I lipread well. Maybe lipreading stresses the hell out of me and Id rather not. Maybe I can talk on the phone and enjoy music. Maybe I cant or dont. So how do you know the best way to communicate with a deaf person? Follow their cues. Notice how they communicate with you, and respond in kind. If I speak to you, speak back. - Face me. - Open your mouth when you speak, without over-enunciating or going too slowly. - Dont shout. If I dont understand, try rephrasing. - Add visual clues such as indicating the thing/person you are talking about. - Watch my facial expression to see if I understand, and if I dont, find another way to communicate until it works. If I indicate my deafness by pointing to my ears, and miming that I'd like to write with pen and paper, dont respond by speaking and expecting me to lipread you. Find a pen and paper and write instead, or use your phone. While youre at it, act normal. Dont tell me about every deaf encounter youve ever had, or make me sit through a demonstration of the fingerspelling you learnt at school, or assume that Im not intelligent. Dont share your heartbreak that I will never hear the birds twittering nor the patter-patter of rain. And definitely dont suggest that I undergo surgical intervention. When referring to someones deafness, use the same terms as they use. If they say hard of hearing, dont call them deaf. If youre not sure, ask. In fact, just about everything can be clarified with a simple question. Before you ask, though, think in terms of basic courtesy that you would extend to anyone. For instance, don't ask overly probing or personal questions if you are strangers. If you'd like to do your bit to raise awareness about deafness, feel free to share this post. Thanks!
