23.01.2022 The Spokey Bloke is holidaying in Süd Tirol (Italy) right now. Amazing place. We’ve hiked up the mountains and had a great lunch at over 2000 m. Tomorrow we will be mountain biking from Plose after taking the gondola up the mountain. Choice of green, blue and red runs. Might stick to green and blue! I’ll be heading back via Switzerland and Germany, to the UK early October and back in Australia on the 23rd Is October.

23.01.2022 The Spokey Bloke has been doing some of his 'day job' work (graphic design) to help out the new trails at Lake Leschenaultia. All the map signs, directional signage and trail description plates are in. Just a few finishing touches and the trails will be ready for the official launch on Sunday 8 September. There's a network of nearly 12 km of mostly green and blue trails, while the old miniature railway route has become a very easy trail suitable for beginners and young children on basic bikes. Go check it out!

20.01.2022 Always rewarding when you meet a customer a few days after doing a service and they love their smooth running bike!

18.01.2022 Just had this come into Spokey Bloke Central. It's a Mavic XA Elite rear wheel and the owner mentioned that the drive would sometimes not engage. Pretty easy to see why, with a buildup of grease and dust preventing the pawls from fully extending. I think it's going to work a lot better now!

15.01.2022 OK, sometimes, the Spokey Bloke is a complete prat. On the plus side, Dee's bike (for which a couple of bike shops had swallowed up $400 without really solving the issue) is now running smooth as silk, with its full compliment of 27 gears, rather than 15. The probable cause was a fairly small spring in the shifter which had been hooked in the wrong place, preventing the higher gears from engaging reliably. As usual it's the tiniest things which cause the biggest headaches!

14.01.2022 The Spokey Bloke is going to do a section of Munda Biddi in April. So we did a trial run from Kalamunda to Carinyah Hut yesterday to check out how the loaded bikes performed. Pretty good actually. The Jetboil was deployed for the first time making lunch and beverages - very impressive. The pea gravel was a bit of a nightmare so we're hoping for a good soaking in the next three weeks! Here's the bikepacking setup on my trusty Specialized Fuse 27.5+.

12.01.2022 Spokey Bloke quiz: Spot the problem!

12.01.2022 This was a bit different! A rather lovely 2011 S-Works Stumpy. The original FutureShock fork had decided to misbehave and the bike was diving horribly under brakes. Parts for that are harder to find than rocking horse poop, so in the end the bold decision was made to bring the whole bike more up to date. First off, a 130 mm 27.5" good condition fork was sourced - with a thru axle instead of the 140 mm 26" original's rather flimsy QR skewer. Also found a good quality 27.5 fron...t wheel. Reducing the stem to 80 mm from the original 100, and increasing bar width by 40 mm complements the very slightly slacker geometry. The rear wheel is still 26" so I've put a 2.4" on the back and a 2.3" on the front which optimises the appearance. Minion DHR II front and back, based on a bit of research that suggests the DHR II is equally happy on the front as the back. Strangely, the original had a massive 38 tooth front ring (10 - 40 cassette), so a shiny red Blackspire 32 tooth chainring was chosen to finish the build. How does it ride? Well, initial thoughts are that it's a massive improvement. You don't feel as though you're pitched over the front wheel and steering seems to be positive and light without being either stodgy or twitchy. Anyone else tried the 27.5/26 combination?

12.01.2022 The Spokey Bloke's day job is graphic design and I was recently asked to help out with some map signs for Pemberton Bike Park. This is still at draft stage but it gives you an idea of what's there - an impressive network of trails in absolutely stunning surroundings. Bring your climbing legs, or arrange for shuttles. And don't go away without doing one of the best wall rides around!

12.01.2022 Finally The Spokey Bloke is back in Perth after a couple of trips to the UK. How's your bike running? In need of a pre-holiday service? Get in touch and I'll see what I can do!

03.01.2022 Love it when a plan comes together! The owner of this Scott Aspect never used the big or small chain rings and was looking to simplify his rig and make it a bit cleaner looking. So, we ordered an 11-40 Sunrace cassette, a 30 tooth Blackspire narrow/wide chainring, 10 speed SLX shifter and a 10 speed chain. Oh, and some matching electric blue chainring bolts. Luckily I had a used but good condition XT derailleur in the parts box as sadly the original 9 speed Deore derailleur ...wouldn't shift correctly (they sometimes do, sometimes don't). For an upgrade to an entry level mountain bike, it's pretty cost-effective. Looks really good and the owner is delighted with the result!

03.01.2022 At Kalamunda Mountain Bike Collective, we're lucky to have trail sponsors who help fund the upkeep of our network. Sponsored trails have a sign at each end featuring the sponsor's logo and a short message. About 20 installed so far - another 40 to go!

02.01.2022 At the Spokey Bloke (Deutschland) HQ in Bonn. Couple of handlebar wraps and some fine adjustments on a roadie. Might head out for a ride along the Rhein Radweg in the next couple of days. Schön!
