22.01.2022 Today is R U OK? Day. This year's message is: 'THERE'S MORE TO SAY AFTER R U OK?' The R U OK? campaign has many resources online via their website: ruok.org.au ...- helping you know what to say when someone says theyre not OK. You dont have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before theyre in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life. Let's look after each other. #RUOK

22.01.2022 Brady lives in Victoria and competes in Athletics. He applied for a 2019 grant and was successful. He told us about his condition of bilateral talipes (clubfeet) and having had 12 operations in his 11 years to enable him to walk. He's also had to deal with a number of other challenges which has resulted in a lot of hospital time. Despite this he's determined to enjoy what all his mates do - play sport. He competes in Multi-class for @AthleticsVictoria. In his words " My dis...ability is physical so it means I sometimes need changes to be made so I can join in. It seems like a lot of sports bodies find this too hard and it easier for them to not include kids like myself. For me, I find it hard to run without falling over and I am not quick on my feet so I find it easier to use a wheelchair with some sports. " It's a reminder to all of us to challenge our practices and ensure young Aussies with a disability have every opportunity to participate in sport We have grants to help with coaching, equipment, fees and program cost. Apply today. Applications close Friday 21 August. https://www.sportaccessfoundation.org.au/what-w/2020-grants

15.01.2022 Quickly becoming one of the most inclusive cricket clubs in Melbourne’s south east, Bentleigh Cricket Club is living its values, hosting an Exhibition Blind Cri...cket Match against the Victorian Blind Cricket team on Sunday Feb 14th at our home ground. https://fb.me/e/3q8ZzEbQq The National Cricket Inclusion Championship, normally held in Geelong each year, includes competitions for blind, deaf and intellectually disabled cricketers. This January, the tournament was unfortunately cancelled due to travel restrictions and quarantine requirements imposed by Covid-19. Instead, Victorian Blind Cricket Association has organised a number of exhibition matches across Melbourne and in Regional Victoria to ensure the team are ready for their upcoming series against NSW in Sydney in mid-March. BCC was quick to volunteer to host a match and two of our Senior Women’s players Trish Jeffery and Emily Shepard were keen to take up the opportunity to participate and join their sons’ in the match to become the first mother/son combinations representing the Red and Blue. Both Trish and Emily’s sons have rare genetic conditions causing deteriorating vision loss, so having the opportunity to play a game of competitive cricket along-side their cricket-mad sons was one not to be missed. With the added benefit of our BCC team of sighted players being able to walk in the shoes and face the same challenges that vision impaired cricket players have to contend with, gives a new appreciation for the opportunity, inclusion and diversity that our game of cricket can offer to all walks of life. Come down and watch the game or even better if you’d like to join the BCC team against Vic Blind Cricket contact [email protected]. We are looking to field a team that is inclusive of our entire club juniors (girls+boys), seniors (men +women), past players, prospective players, anyone and everyone! BBQ and Bar will be open. 09.01.2022 Opening up the Australian landscape for Blind or Vision Impaired people to engage in sport Blind Sports Australia is pleased to announce that they have received... funding through the Department of Healths Driving Inclusion through Sport initiative, to roll out a multifaceted program to provide more opportunities for people who are blind or vision impaired to get active and involved in sport. This project will open up opportunities for people who are blind or vision impaired to engage in sport in their local communities, through a series of activities aimed at educating both the blind and low vision community and the broader community about opportunities that are available. The 3 key deliverables of this project are: 1. Develop online training modules, based on Australian best practice, to assist coaches and volunteers to learn more about vision impairment, communication strategies, adapting sports and ways to empowering people who are blind or vision impaired to take part in sport. 2. Create resources in online or printable formats that assist coaches, volunteers and clubs, to have specific tools, exercises, skills and capacity to engage blind or vision impaired athletes in specific sports. This will include adapting existing world-class material into an Australian context and working with BSA member organisations and relevant NSOs, in the production of new material for other key sports undertaken in Australia. 3. Establish new and strengthen existing regional hubs for blind sporting activity, to enable ongoing opportunities for people who are blind or vision impaired to participate in sport. Blind Sports Australia is privileged to have a wonderful membership base of both state-based and sport based member organisations. One of the key aims of this project will be to engage with and support existing member organisations in the work that they do across the country. We will also work closely with our members, other vision-based organisations, various collaboration partners and local communities to grow and strengthen new opportunities for people to participate in sport in their local areas. We hope that this 2-year project will be a springboard for many people who are blind or have low vision, that have not had regular engagement with sport, to have access to ongoing opportunities to participate in sport through the development of resources, awareness-raising and growth of important networks. 02.01.2022 Sport Access Foundation believes in a fair go. We want to ensure young Aussies with a disability can access sport. That's why we are supporting @FozzFootball Craig Foster and @AmnestyOz along with these Australian Sports people - @Craig_Foster, Liz Ellis, @NetballAust Frank Farina, Benny Elias, @NSWRL , Paul Roos, Alex Tobin, Lisa Sthalekar, @AusWomenCricket Nikki Dryden Daniela di Toro, Paralympic Games, Ian Chappell, Akec Makur Chuot, AFL, Richmond FC , Natalie Galea, ...UNSW Human Rights Institute, Paul Wade. These are 400 mums, dads, brothers and sisters and children who for 7 years have been locked up on an Island. They could so easily be US. As Craig Foster @fozzfootball says: "They are not allowed to work legally, they cant access education, play the sports they love, access health care or plan for their futures. Many live with trauma and illness every day because of their treatment in detention. Theyve lost friends, family, and are tired from hanging on. They desperately need our help." Craig Foster through @AmnestyOz www.GameOver.org.au is calling on all sporting clubs, and all of us to ask our Prime Minister and to join NZ's PM call to end and resettle these people to a life in Australia. These are people - they are US. They have a right to a fair go.
