25.01.2022 Swings help you stimulate our senses which can help regulate the vestibular system. Now that playgrounds are open here in Victoria, free your inner child and stimulate your senses and that child inside that wants to play after so many hours locked inside. There is no age limit to swinging and the sensation of being free, happy and calm are some of the best therapeutic effects of swinging that we all need more of!

24.01.2022 What is forward head carriage? As the name implies, due to dysfunction in the neck region, the head moves from its proper position further forward. The more the head moves forward, the greater gravity produces weight bearing stress on the neck. 20.01.2022 As Osteopaths, we are trained to find the cause of pain as opposed to chasing it from where a patient might be feeling it so we need to also examine areas away from the site of pain. Pain that comes from a compensatory pattern from an injury or dysfunction or referred pain can often disguise the actual source the pain is coming from. 19.01.2022 What is the QL Muscle? The QL, is a key piece of your core. While technically an abdominal muscle, the QL is located deep enough that it has tremendous influence over your lower back. If you are suffering from lower back pain, understanding and caring for your QL can be a major factor in finding and alleviating the source of that pain.... How do you stretch the QL muscle? Dont forget your deep belly breathing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vrPithENpg A simple, QL trigger point release drill to alleviate tightness and tension in your lower back: https://www.sportsandspinalgroup.com.au/quadratus-lumborum/ The SSG Truth Bomb Sitting for prolonged periods of time affects the stabiliser muscles of the spine, effectively shutting them off. When these muscles no longer aid in the support of the spine and lower back, then the QL takes up the slack. Which is a job its not meant to do.
18.01.2022 What is the most important part of ankle sprain recovery? After an ankle sprain, there is delayed activation of our BUTTS! Amazingly, there is a delay in muscle activation in our Glute Medius muscle after an ankle sprain. This muscle helps to support our hip and pelvis joints in an upright position or during walking. Without good activation, the ankle may not be in an ideal position to function. ... Read our blog below to better understand: https://www.sportsandspinalgroup.com.au/3-tips-ankle-sprai/ The SSG Truth Bomb Ankle sprains are very common. Each year, around 230,000 Australians see a GP or allied health professional for an ankle sprain or strain. How can we prevent? Undertaking flexibility, balance, stretching and strengthening exercises in weekly training programs. Including agility work in training programs so the ankle joint is capable of sustaining high acceleration forces and quick changes in direction.
18.01.2022 WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT BABIES ROLL? 16.01.2022 Can you see differences between a typical kindergarten aged childs hand (left) and a typical 7 year olds hand (right)? This is why kindergarten aged kids generally cannot write yet. Playdough, colouring, cutting, gluing, playing outside, digging in dirt, sensory play, dress up play, science experiments, beading, puzzles, throwing balls, etc. All of these things help their hands to develop. 16.01.2022 Did you know that having a forward head carriage can cause neck pain and headaches? The further your head moves forward, the greater the weight bearing stresses are on your neck. So why is this significant? Because it is a prominent cause of neck pain. This is due in part to abnormal stress/strain on muscles, bones, ligaments, and nerves. ... Prolonged forward head carriage (or posture) can also result in several degenerative neck conditions. 10.01.2022 The sacroiliac joint connects the hip bones (iliac crests) to the sacrum, the triangular bone between the lumbar spine and the tailbone (coccyx). The primary function of the sacroiliac joints is to absorb shock between the upper body and the pelvis and legs. The sacroiliac joint typically has little motion. Small movements at the joint help with shock absorption and forward/backward bending. The joint is reinforced by strong ligaments surrounding it, some of which extend acro...ss the joint in the back of the pelvis. This network of soft tissues provides support, limits movement at the joint, and assists with absorbing pressure. One of the sources of sacroiliac joint dysfunction is too little movement (hypomobility or fixation) can cause muscle tension, pain, and may inhibit mobility. Pain is typically felt on one side of the low back or buttocks, and can radiate down the back of leg, similar to sciatic pain. Check out the video from our YouTube library below for an exercise to help with sacroiliac joint mobility: https://youtu.be/w_MRlSlIeJk

07.01.2022 IMPORTANT UPDATE We are still waiting clarification, as a profession, in regards to some of the conditions stipulated by the government regarding allied health practices in Stage 4. Some details have not yet been finalised by the Government, so we apologise for any inconvenience due to the sudden changes over the coming days.... Unfortunately, due to some of these changes, Sports and Spinal Group will need to CLOSE tomorrow, Thursday 6th August while we await further clarification from the Government. We are so very sorry for the inconvenience (and equally as frustrated by this process and what has been unfolding). Under Stage 4 restrictions, Osteopathic clinics can continue to see patients, however the State Government has placed restrictions on who can attend for face-to-face appointments. These restrictions include the need for a GP or medical specialist referral for your osteopathic appointments. We will provide further updates on this as soon as we have some clarification. If you have a GP referred appointment, you can travel through the travel restriction of 5km from home. This does not apply to medical appointment. We strongly advise that you travel with proof of your appointment in case you are stopped. For this purpose, please retain your confirmation email, your SMS appointment reminder message and this GP or medical specialist referral. Please phone us on 95335536 if need any further information or clarification or would like to speak to your Osteopath. We will let you know more as soon as we find out more information. We thank you for your ongoing patience and understanding as we navigate the current situation and for your ongoing support during such uncertain times Osteopaths around Victoria during COVID 2020

06.01.2022 Recent research has shown that the inability to stabilise is actually a hip issue related to an inability to properly fire the glute medius (an issue with the brains connection to the muscle) or an actual weakness in the glute medius (a strength issue). 03.01.2022 Who Inspires you? I am inspired constantly by my patients, one of those amazing individuals truly is Deanna. I have been treating Deanna for some time now and I believe she is one of the most remarkable and strong willed people I have met in this life. Were all going through a lot of emotional, physical and financial strain in these more testing times with the world asking us to sacrifice. Every time I see Deanna she reminds me of how resolute and resilient we can be, if we ...choose to. Even in times where we feel like the ground has been drawn from right underneath us. Each day we take a breath in this life we are lucky, I am grateful. I myself have also felt my whole world being turned upside down. I was attacked with a king hit to the head during a random act of violence two years ago and was lucky enough to not have any long term impacts of my concussion. For months I was overcome with bouts of depression, mental exhaustion, inability to perform any exercise without having severe headaches and whole body fatigue. I wasnt able to do any of the things that served me, the things that I enjoyed, I felt like I lost my reason for living. I pondered all those months when I was feeling at my lowest... pondering what if it was different and I had died.. what if I wasnt lucky..why me? In hindsight I realise that positive change comes from shifting your mentality from the victim, to the learner. Many things happen in this world due to unimaginable circumstances that we cannot control. The best thing we can do is surround ourselves with the people that support us and find our passion. What really serves us in life and what wisdom and support can we impart on those around us who are in need? You are always given a choice to see the lesson in hardship. Do you sit in frustration and sorrow, do you identify as the victim or do you adapt, learn from your experience and move forward? I am grateful for the chance to be alive, choose to see the lesson in what life brings me and be inspired by people around me.
