18.01.2022 WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT BABIES ROLL? Learning to roll helps to lay the foundation for many other important developmental skills such as crawling and walking and build strength in their back, neck and core muscles. Rolling also helps form connections between the left and right sides of the brain by using both sides of their body together. ... #funfactfriday #babydevelopment #developmentalmilestones #developmentaldelay #developmentalskills #paediatrics #osteopathy #paediatricosteopathy #osteopathicmedicine #babyhacks #babytips #parentinghacks #positiveparentingtips #mumsofinsta #mumsofinstagram #babiesofinsta #babiesofinstagram #ig_motherhood #newbornbaby #newmums #newmumlife #toddlerlife #learnthroughplay #babydevelopment #developmentalmilestones #mumandbaby #motherandbaby #firsttimemama #melbourne #bayside #stkilda #hampton #beamaris #empoweringlifelonghealth

14.01.2022 What is forward head carriage? As the name implies, due to dysfunction in the neck region, the head moves from its proper position further forward. The more the head moves forward, the greater gravity produces weight bearing stress on the neck. Check out our YouTube library below to learn which exercise helps to reverse the effects of forward head carriage:... https://www.sportsandspinalgroup.com.au/pec-minor-major-tr/ #triggerpoint #pain #osteopathy #osteo #myotherapy #neck #erectorspinae #headaches #posture #mobilise #goals #alliedhealth #beaumaris #hampton #weinspireasateam #findyourhappy #weareexcellencedriven #empoweringlifelonghealth

13.01.2022 The sacroiliac joint connects the hip bones (iliac crests) to the sacrum, the triangular bone between the lumbar spine and the tailbone (coccyx). The primary function of the sacroiliac joints is to absorb shock between the upper body and the pelvis and legs. The sacroiliac joint typically has little motion. Small movements at the joint help with shock absorption and forward/backward bending. The joint is reinforced by strong ligaments surrounding it, some of which extend acro...ss the joint in the back of the pelvis. This network of soft tissues provides support, limits movement at the joint, and assists with absorbing pressure. One of the sources of sacroiliac joint dysfunction is too little movement (hypomobility or fixation) can cause muscle tension, pain, and may inhibit mobility. Pain is typically felt on one side of the low back or buttocks, and can radiate down the back of leg, similar to sciatic pain. Check out the video from our YouTube library below for an exercise to help with sacroiliac joint mobility: https://youtu.be/w_MRlSlIeJk

12.01.2022 Did you know that having a forward head carriage can cause neck pain and headaches? The further your head moves forward, the greater the weight bearing stresses are on your neck. So why is this significant? Because it is a prominent cause of neck pain. This is due in part to abnormal stress/strain on muscles, bones, ligaments, and nerves. ... Prolonged forward head carriage (or posture) can also result in several degenerative neck conditions. Please speak to one of our practitioners at your next appointment for more information or head over to our website: https://www.sportsandspinalgroup.com.au/

08.01.2022 SSG Truth Bomb Did you know that having enough thoracic extension enables the shoulder blade to sit in the correct position and function correctly. This is one reason why a lack of thoracic mobility can cause shoulder pain If you have poor thoracic mobility, we recommend performing thoracic mobility daily!... If you are unsure - come into the clinic for an assessment and exercise program https://www.sportsandspinalgroup.com.au/

08.01.2022 Why is tummy time so important? The development of a baby’s gross motor skills develops first from the head and tummy time is what helps build this foundational skill and also helps to build the skills needed for the developmental milestones that follow. Tummy time helps to build... hand-eye coordination head and neck strength and control shoulder, arm and hand strength tongue and jaw muscle strength sensory development The length of time a baby spends on their tummy varies greatly and throughout the day depending on their tolerance levels which can change day to day and depending on how tired they are. The best way is to keep it fun and interesting and go for short regular bursts of tummy time over long stints as they build their strength and tolerance. This time can be increased progressively as their strength and control develops or until they reach their next most common milestone of rolling from their tummy to their back! #paeditricosteopathy #osteoforkids #tummytime #developmentalmilestones

06.01.2022 As Osteopaths, we are trained to find the cause of pain as opposed to chasing it from where a patient might be feeling it so we need to also examine areas away from the site of pain. Pain that comes from a compensatory pattern from an injury or dysfunction or referred pain can often disguise the actual source the pain is coming from. To learn more about what Osteopaths do check out our website: ... https://www.sportsandspinalgroup.com.au/

03.01.2022 Does your baby have a flat head? Do they favour sleeping or turning to one side? Have you noticed their head is tilted on the side when they are upright? ... These can be signs that they have or are developing a flat head or plagiocephaly (flatness on one side causing an asymmetrical head shape) or brachiocephaly (flatness across the back of the head). These often go hand in hand with a torticollis caused by tension in the muscles of the neck related to the way a baby is lying in utero, birth trauma or other dysfunctions in the head, neck and spine. These can be present from birth or develop over time as your baby grows. Our experienced team of Paediatric Osteopaths are trained to assess and diagnose and help you manage these issues and help to minimise their impact on your baby’s pain/discomfort levels (which can also affect feeding amongst other things), mobility and ability to meet their milestones. Check out our website below or speak with one of our team if you have any concerns about your baby at your next appointment: https://www.sportsandspinalgroup.com.au/se/babies-children/

03.01.2022 Learning to crawl is an important milestone that happens generally between 5 and 11 months. It is an important milestone that help babies to develop: Neck, core, hips, arms and hand strength and coordination... Coordination of the upper and lower body and the right and left sides Visual perception and motor skills Integration of their primitive reflexes The progression from tummy time to rolling to commando crawling and a four point kneel is generally the pattern that sets a baby up crawling. If they do not progress past commando crawling, develop a bum shuffle or do not coordinate the two sides of their body we recommend you bring them in for a check up. If you have any questions about your baby’s development please contact us: https://www.sportsandspinalgroup.com.au/se/babies-children/
