22.01.2022 Don Shipway 3m A little information ffrom the inside of a pretty shady type of industry and I'm talking about the sports industry and in particular the wholesaling retailing sports industry. Years ago it was a fairly standard industry. Manufacturers or agents came knocking on your door wanting to sell a product. In the early days, we met some good people. Chris Bonython comes to mind, Darkie Thompson, not by co-incidence Darkie worked for Chris. Others were sharks and when... shaking hands you often had to count your fingers. But by and large you knew the sharks and gave them as little as possible. But since we came back after being dubbed by the Japanese company ASICS there is a whole level of shady stuff designed to eliminate competition as far as prices are concerned. We don't really care because we have a number of suppliers willing to offload stock to get some cash flow. But what we have been told and now seen the evidence is how much wholesalers are just thumbing their nose at the spirit of the ACCC laws and the government refuses to act allowing the anti-competitive practices to be more common then at any time I can remember in over 40 years of retailing. Take this practice where companies withhold high-end product, football shoes running shoes to favour the big end of town, or those retailers who don't make waves as far as price is concerned. If you withdraw the top end product from the market apart from a few favoured stores then effectively you are ensuring that price competition is eliminated, which favours the big end of town and the companies own retail stores!! The stores in high costing shopping centres for example. Well, we are going to still be a thorn in these companies for sometime to come and the reps who haven't returned calls are the same ones who used to come crawling for orders. That's ok I never have a problem with people making a decision like that. Never. But I can also make a decision. I too have choices. And for years to come. You have been advised. We are still here and my memory is long.
