23.01.2022 Hi Everyone, I love this time of year because after all the family stuff, I get an opportunity for a week or so to hermit myself away, reflect on the past year and plan out what I want to do next! 2019 was one of my busiest years for 1-1 coaching and I had the opportunity to work with some wonderful athletes as well as clients from the corporate sector - and, for the first time, I coached an actress! Which demonstrated to me the power of the Sportsmind techniques not just fo...r sporting success, but for LIFE success - whatever your career. I also linked up with Lydia Lassila for a joint workshop we held; connected with Five time Olympian Barbara Kendall from NZ who joined us for a Sports NLP workshop in Byron; held two more fantastic Sports Hypnosis trainings in Byron; put my Sports Hypnosis book up on Amazon/Kindle; and in my final coaching session for the year, completed a three-month coaching program with an inspiring 13 year old soccer player who has set huge goals for himself over the next ten years! Great to see someone so young starting their sports career with Sportsmind training - what an advantage he will have in years to come! So what are your goals and plans to achieve them in 2020? Spend some time over the next week or so - during the breaks in the cricket of course - to write down what you want to DO; what you want to HAVE; and who you want to BECOME in 2020. And if you need some reminders on how to do this effectively, check out my articles on How to Write and Achieve Goals at https://www.sportsmind.com.au//goal-setting-and-goal-achie Have a safe and joyful Christmas and set yourself up to win in 2020. Remember - My Sports Hypnosis book is now on kindle! You can get it here https://www.amazon.com.au/s Give me a call on 07 5445 7994 if you'd like any more information. Imagine .... Believe ... and Fly! Jeffrey PS : I'm really looking forward to the first Sports NLP workshop for the year in February - hope to see you there! See the details below. 22.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Look at the picture below. Recognise that when we were young children we were really clear about what we wanted, and when we wanted it! Do You Know What You Want?... The trouble with being an 'adult' is that oftentimes people have mixed emotions about what they do and don't want! There are so many competing desires, aspirations and responsibilities that many people don't really know what they want - and so they stay where they are! The second issue is that many people don't really want to change. Sure, they would like things to get 'better' for them: they would like to improve their sports performances, or their financial situation, or their health, or their relationships, or their career ...... but they want these external things to change for them without changing themselves! Any significant positive shift in your life comes from a change in your thinking and / or a change in your routines. Everything in your life from your health, to your sports performances, to your career achievements and relationships is a direct consequence of your previous thinking and current regular behaviours. For Things to Get Better YOU Want to Get Better So firstly recognise that if you are aspiring to something better in some area of your life, then YOU will want to change. You will want to change your mindset, and you will want to develop some new habits in the area of your life you want to improve upon. Secondly, know that if YOU don't have any specific aspirations to better your life at the moment, then any changes in your life will be driven by other people or by external forces. Isn't it better that YOU start to direct and design your life, rather than leaving your success and happiness to the largess of others, or the whims of an impersonal fate? Getting Ready To Change Finally, even if someone 'says' they want to change some aspect of their life, they need to be genuinely ready to make the change. The only way get to this point is to identify all the pain the existing situation has cost you in the past, is causing you now, and recognise it will continue to be this way in the future - unless and until you change things. Whenever we link pain about a situation to the past, present and on into the future, then most people will change - provided they know how to. ..... but that's a subject for another article! If you do want a head start, coming to my Sports Hypnosis program in November would be a great idea. 22.01.2022 Take a 'Life Inventory' & Design Your Future Hi Everyone, Returned from another great Sports NLP workshop in Byron Bay - managed to finish the workshop and get out of Dodge just in time before the deluge which flooded some of the buildings in town!... One of the concepts I encouraged participants to consider - and I urge you to take a moment to do so now as well - is your 'ideal' life. Not just in your sport, but to think about how you would like your life to be in the following five key areas : * Health & Fitness * Learning & Contribution - personal growth * Relationships with Friends, Family and Colleagues * Wealth & Possessions * Career & Sporting Achievements Your first step is to take a non-judgmental, objective 'snapshot' of your life in each of these areas now .... How is your health and fitness? What are your relationships like? What have you learned in the past year and how have you contributed to the wider community? What about your financial wealth and possessions? And of course, your career and sports accomplishments? Only by recognising where you are now can you move forward to where you'd like to be. Secondly, see and understand that your 'life' is not a thing - it's a 24 hour process experienced minute by minute, hour by hour every day. So you want to envisage your ideal life as a lived daily experience. In your ideal life, what time would you get up? What would you have for breakfast? How would your morning progress? Where would you be during the day? What activities would you be doing? How would you be earning income? Who else would be there in your ideal life, and how would you relate to them? What things do you own in the ideal life - where do you live, what vehicle do you drive, etc? Most importantly, what are your POSITIVE ROUTINES that enable and support your continuing success and progress? If you'd like some help with this process, my personal performance coaching services are available via Skype. My objective in these coaching programs is not just to make you a better sportsperson - but to assist you to live a more fulfilled and happy life - in all those five key areas. If you want to know more here are the details : https://www.sportsmind.com.au//get-coa/one-on-one-coaching Give me a call on (07) 5445 7994 or email me at [email protected] Remember - My Sports Hypnosis book is now on kindle! 21.01.2022 I've been re-reading The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, and I highly recommend it. He makes some excellent points about time that are especially relevant to sportspeople that I'd like to highlight for you. 15.01.2022 Please share far and wide! Henny Penny in the 21st Century .... Once Upon A Time.... there was a young chicken called Greta Penny, (great-great-grandaughter of... Henny Penny), who discovered a strange black rock in the chook yard. The wise old rooster and mother hens told her that it was was just a piece of harmless coal, but outside the safety of the chookyard fence, the sly UN fox whispered to her that it was really a piece of the night sky ... and the sky was actually about to fall, killing everyone! The wise old rooster and mother hens scoffed at her and told her it was nonsense, but Greta Penny didn't listen to her elders and kept listening to that sly UN fox who explained to her that the only way to save herself and the other younger chickens was to follow him that night to their "Safe House" which would protect them all from the falling sky. Greta Penny was very upset and angry at the wise old rooster and mother hens for ignoring the signs of imminent doom, so she began a campaign to 'educate' all the little chicks in the chookyard, showing them the evidence of the falling sky - which she held in her hand! "See ... the sky is falling! The sky is falling", she proclaimed. The little chicks were too young to know any different, and so they believed Greta Penny, and late that night when the wise old rooster and mother hens were asleep in bed, Greta Penny gathered all the young chicks together and they escaped the chookyard through a hole in the fence and made a beeline for the UN fox's "Safe House". Unfortunately for Greta Penny and the gullible young chicks, once they were in the UN fox's "Safe House", that sneaky old fox and his cronies turned Greta Penny and the chicks into dinner! As they were finishing their meal, the sly head fox, rubbing his full belly, asked the other foxes : Now how can we con the other chickens? One replied : How about bird flu? Another said : Tell them the pigs have WMDs? Another suggested : An ice-age imminent?. After consideration, the sly head fox said : "No, I've got the perfect con : CLIMATE CHANGE !". 13.01.2022 What's MOST Important to You? I was reflecting this week about the routines that I make 'musts' in my life, and evaluating them as to their worth. Some - like my morning yoga routine, or pausing to give thanks before every meal - I saw as positive and beneficial to my life; others - like always wanting something sweet after dinner! - are less useful. To excel in your sport, or career, you want to make 'musts' those actions and routines that are most likely to lead you to su...cceed. Obviously, regular fitness and skill training times are essential, but perhaps it's time to examine some of your other 'musts' and establish whether they are a help or a hindrance to you. Many people's lives contain too many outright negative musts, or simply time-wasting musts. For instance, how many people do you know that must : * Have a cup of coffee (and/or a cigarette) first thing in the morning? * Must check Facebook every hour? * Must place a bet on the Melbourne Cup? * Must have something sweet at morning tea? * Must criticise a person when they make a mistake? Do you have any negative, or time-wasting musts? It's been wisely said that to reach a cherished goal, start at the end. In other words, think about what actions and routines you would be doing as a successful athlete in your sport, or your career, or your relationship. I've listed some below, and I'd love to hear some of yours. Let's bring more of these positive musts into our lives! * Must take 20 deep breaths first thing in the morning. * Must praise my partner at least three times today. * Must call my mother once a week. * Must walk barefooted on the earth a couple of times per week. * Must list what is going well in my life / sport / job today. * Must have a cleansing juice fast one day per week. Sports Hypnosis Next Week My 3-day practical Sports Hypnosis workshop commences next Tuesday in Byron Bay. There is space for two more people, so if you're interested give me a call. There is also one room available at the venue if you're looking for reasonably priced accommodation during the training. Dates : Tues Nov 5th - Thur Nov 7th Details are here : www.sportsmind.com.au Imagine .... Believe ... and Fly! Jeffrey
12.01.2022 Forty Years of Sportsmind! I established Sportsmind in July 1980, so this year I will celebrate 40 YEARS OF SPORTSMIND! I have to smile since I've lost count of how many people said I would "never make a go of it" - including my wife, (bless her heart), who always wanted me to "go and get a real job"! Sometimes I think it was only wanting to prove them all wrong that gave me the determination to succeed!... So fear not the nay-sayers! I'm glad I held my vision even when things got pretty lean for a couple of years! Sportsmind has taken me on many trips overseas and given me the opportunity to work with many inspiring sportspeople from dozens of different sports : from aerial skiing, to pistol shooting, to gliding, to tennis and golf and all the rest! Thanks to you all for your support through the years .... and I'm looking forward to the next forty! www.sportsmind.com.au
12.01.2022 How to Achieve in 2020. I'm sure by now you've all identified a few things you'd like to accomplish in 2020 - so I wanted to share with you one simple secret to turning that dream into a reality: establish good habits. Most people think of achievement as the result of a sequence of steps, which is kind of true. However it's more accurate to say that success is the result of repeated actions over a long period of time - or in other words, GOOD HABITS!... Many people genuinely WANT things to change for them - they want a better job; more success in their sport; a rewarding relationship; great health; and so on - yet are unwilling to change THEMSELVES .... unwilling to change the habits which comprise who they are. What Apps Do You Have Running? We all, each of us, are simply collections of repeated habits - or 'apps' that we're running! We all have habits of eating; sleeping; training; etc - but also habits of emoting and thinking. What emotional apps are you running? Are they serving you well? Are they taking you closer to your goals or further away? What about your mental apps? Again - do you have patterns of thinking that are counterproductive? Remember this insightful quote from Samuel Johnson : ‘The diminutive chains of habit are seldom heavy enough to be felt, till they are too strong to be broken.’ So here at the beginning of 2020, take an inventory of your 'apps' ..... discard those that no longer serve you, and install some that do! ...... And if you want to establish some good thinking habits, put yourself through my 60-Day Sports Hypnosis training. You can get it here : https://www.amazon.com.au/s Have a successful and fulfilling 2020! Give me a call on 07 5445 7994 if you'd like any more information. Imagine .... Believe ... and Fly! 10.01.2022 Why Australia Failed Dismally in Rugby World Cup Given my 40 years experience working in sport psychology, it's no surprise to me that the Wallabies were uncere...moniously bundled out of the Rugby World Cup quarter finals last night - I expected it. But let's be clear exactly where the blame for this dismal performance lies: with the CEO of Rugby Australia, Raelene Castle for her appalling handling of the Israel Folau fiasco. Many will want to blame the coach, Michael Cheika, but clearly the unwise decision to sack one of Australia's best players over a personal social media post caused a great deal of division and distraction and seriously disrupted the team's preparations. What has emerged from this whole fiasco, is that the Australian Rugby board has shown itself to be an authoritarian organisation more concerned with the 'politically correct' opinions of the LGBTIQRSTUVWXYZ.... etc. lobby than with the welfare and support of their own players! This is what happens when we allow extremist minorities to dictate policies - and for what? Isreal Folau said, (on his personal FB page), that "homosexuals will go to hell." Big deal! So what? Personally, I don't believe in hell, and I imagine not many homosexuals believe in hell either - so what's the problem? Weren't these people ever told by their mothers : "sticks & stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me?" All Rugby Australia had to do was to release a statement distancing itself from his personal post, and say they did not share his beliefs. End of story! Of course the LGBTIQRSTUVWXYZ....etc thought police would have gnashed their teeth, stamped their little feet, spat their dummies and yelled and screamed about it ... but what's new? They do that about any opinion that differs from their own myopic view of the universe! The storm-in-a-teacup 'controversy' would have blown over in a couple of days and become forgotten history. Instead, Rugby Australia chose to flex its power and demonstrate how 'inclusive' an organisation it is, and came down like a ton of mindless brinks on Folau - not realising that there are many not only in the wider community who would side with him, but so would many of his fellow players, particularly from Pacific Island nations, and in the national team! Put yourself in the position of being a team mate of Folau's - what do the actions of Rugby Australia tell you? What psychological impact does it have on the players, individually and collectively? The message is loud and clear: "watch your back, because the boss won't support you!" To perform at any sport at the elite level, you have to really give your ALL - blood, sweat, tears - your very soul, every game. So why would you do that for an organisation that will treat you like they did Israel Folau? This is why the team did so poorly - not only were they missing one of their best players, but they were all psychologically undermined by this fiasco. Regardless of your opinions on homosexuality, (and I believe everyone is entitled to their own sexual preference provided it isn't pushed on others, especially children), the issue at stake here is CIVIL LIBERTY. Now some argue, he was 'under contract' and not permitted to to share personal views like he did publicly - but an employer cannot 'contract' away an individual's basic human rights - rights enshrined under our Constitution - so that argument is invalid. While you may or may not agree with his views, he is entitled to have his opinions and religious beliefs - and to be sacked by an employer for saying something on his personal page is ridiculous. Are we all going to have our employers going over OUR social media posts and being sacked if we say the 'wrong thing'? And who is going to evaluate that - the LGBTIQRSTUVWXYZ....etc thought police? The politically correct, left-wing nazis in the ABC? Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook? Will biologists who dare to state the fact that there are scientifically only two sexes, now be sacked for 'hate speech' against those who believe in the fiction of 'gender fluidity'? Everyone has a right to live the way they want and to have their own opinions. I stand up for the right of all people to believe and live the way they want, and their right to share views without discrimination. Once we start saying what is right and wrong in free speech, it's no longer 'free' speech is it? In the words of Benjamin Franklin : "Without freedom of thought there can be no such thing as wisdom, and no such thing as public liberty without freedom of speech" Understand this: Australia's dismal rugby World Cup performance was due to one thing - the reprehensible actions of Australian Rugby administrators in attacking the inalienable right of Israel Folau to freedom of religion and freedom of speech, and unfortunately for Australian rugby fans, the Wallabies reaped the consequences of these ill-advised actions. 06.01.2022 A Great Week for Sportsmind Athletes ..... Hi Everyone, Two of the athletes I've been working with had big competitions last weekend, and both came out winners!... The interesting thing is that one - (Laura a 10m diver) - was ahead going into the finals and stayed ahead to win by an even greater margin; while the other - (Civon a pistol shooter) - started well behind but gradually clawed her way back to win in the last round. The important thing here is that it doesn't matter whether you're behind or ahead .... to be successful, you want to say focused on YOUR process : one dive at a time; one shot at a time; one serve at a time; one play at a time; or whatever for your sport. This is the key to success - have a specific process that puts your body, emotions, and mind into a peak performing zone, and stick to it. Sportsmind training can teach you how to do this - but it takes consistent practice over time. You don't get physically fit with one or two gym sessions do you? Likewise, you can't build confidence, self belief and mental toughness with a couple of sessions with a 'sports psychologist'! What is required is a sophisticated, comprehensive metal training program with a proven track record. This is Sportsmind performance coaching. The Power of Pain "I don't count my sit-ups. I only start counting when it starts hurting, because they are the only ones that count." Muhammed Ali As sportspeople, we've all experienced pain - the physical pain of injury or extreme exertion; the emotional pain of a disappointing performance or expectations dashed; the pain of rejection. While it is natural to avoid pain and seek pleasure, to be truly successful we want to change our automatic reactions to pain, because in sport - as Jerry Rice famously says - it's only by doing what others won't that we can develop the fitness and skills that others don't have. But how do you do that? ..... read on! First, recognise that most pain is imagined pain, not real physiological pain. Humans are unique in the animal kingdom in that we have the capacity to react physiologically as intensely to imagined scenarios, as we do to 'real' events. This is however, a two edged sword - we can use this positively to build confidence and motivation, or when used wrongly, leads to self doubt, apathy and quitting. Often when you set a goal - whatever it is - you will encounter challenges, hurdles and resistance from both within yourself and from others. Inner resistance can be labelled lots of things : procrastination; doubt; lack of clarity; unconfidence; hesitation; uncertainty; whatever. Essentially it's just FEAR. Fear of success; fear of failure; fear of the unknown; fear of rejection. In other words fear of some kind of pain - usually imagined pain, not real pain at all. In other words, you envisage that the actions that you're proposing will somehow lead to pain of some kind. How are you making the situation painful ... or more painful than it needs to be? It's easy to imagine more negatives than there are in reality. Challenge the beliefs that come up. If it's fear of rejection for example, think : if no-one is rejecting you, then you're probably a door mat, and are not doing much worthwhile in your life anyway! All successful people are rejected by some people - often simply because of jealousy, so why fear rejection? The only way to deal with fear is to confront it head on. To do that, you want to learn to picture and imagine and link MORE PAIN TO NOT TAKING ACTION, THAN TO ACTING. What do you currently link pain - and pleasure - to? What associations have you made in the past that are driving your behaviour ... driving your experience of pain? You want to link pain to staying where you are - and pleasure to not only where you want to go, but also to the steps that will take you there. You can do this simply by taking a piece of paper, dividing it into two columns, and writing two lists. In the left hand column write down all it will cost you if you don't take action - if you stay where you are. Then in the right hand column list all the benefits you will gain by taking action. Then take some time to visualise both of these scenarios - and make sure to feel the pain that inaction will lead to, as well as the pleasure of attaining the goal or outcome you want. 02.01.2022 The latest Sportsmind success story. Civon Smith a pistol shooter who has just completed the 1-1 mental skills training with me. A personal best at her qualifying comp! Here's what she has to say : Thanks so much for your guidance in Sportsmind coaching for the past few months. Your sessions have helped me understand how I could manage my own mental process better during trainings and competitions. I was one of the many contenders for the Tokyo Olympic 2020, now 2021. Du...ring one of the selection competitions, with all the hype and excitement around these events, I have actually shot my personal best of 583 in the Women's 25m Pistol and it was the highest achieved score in the whole selection process! I also shot a personal best during the Women 25m Pistol Finals. As many would think that in such important competitions, one would feel nervous, anxious, fear of failure and all sorts of distractions BUT I actually felt calm and focused on what I need to do to make a good shot one at a time. I would recommend anyone who wants to improve in their mental skills to give Jeff a call. Civon Smith, Pistol Shooting, Qld
