25.01.2022 Looks innocent but her mum might disagree Baby Bonny needed some help wiith her nipping and biting puppy habits. She really likes the taste of her mum and her teef are sharp! We discussed topics like management such as more time in her crate, outlets to bite like tug of war games frequently, things to chew on that will keep her busy and occupied with for a while rather than just a typical chew toy that they loose focus on quickly and consequences when she won’t stop like... spending some time outside or in her crate. ~ A reminder to you all that puppies need up to 18 hours of sleep a day Most puppies when left to their own devices will cat nap only when they are well past the point of exhausted. We will then have overtired, grumpy puppies that we are trying to reason with which is not fun for anyone! Ensure your puppy has a designated area like a crate or pen that after every hour to hour and a half, your puppy gets put back into to go back to sleep. This will assist greatly in your puppy’s mood and their ability to develop things like impulse control and boundaries. 24.01.2022 Sweet Harper A home consultation to work on a pretty common behaviour in dogs, separation anxiety. 2020 has seen pet dog owners spend a huge amount of time at home with their dogs now more than ever, and although that is nice in some ways, it can be the undoing in other ways! Our dogs need to be confident by themselves, they need to be resilient to be home alone and we owe it to them to give them these skills early on! Although lovely Harper’s separation anxiety was happen...ing well before COVID, it has made things trickier now that she is used to someone being home with her the majority of the time. She is making progress and slowly building that confidence back up to spend short stints at home by herself. If you are working from home, you need to make it a priority that you spend time away from your dog in order for them to not become reliant on you being by their side all day long. Some great ways to include this in your pets weekly routine are: - Look into doggy day care - Use enrichment items for your pet that are in a different room to where you are working. - Have them spend a chunk of time outside exploring the backyard or sleeping in the sun. - Crate training - Go to a cafe to work for a couple of hours. - Use a friend or family members home to work from instead of your own. - Take a conference call from the car instead of the home office - Look at doing scent detection or nose work games that the dog can be independently doing while you work. 22.01.2022 When the dog you are training looks at you like this Luna has been very recently adopted by her wonderful new pawrents. Prior to being adopted, Luna was dumped at a pound in poor condition with four very young pups. They were all put into foster care and her babies found homes and then came the time for Luna to find her own forever home and boy is it a good one. During our consult we worked on ensuring we could make this transition for Luna as easy as possible, we worked on... desensitising her to now living with a cat, kids and a busy family. We also did some obedience training and discussed all things enrichment, mental stimulation and ways to keep Luna feeling good and feeling confident when being left alone in her new home. Luna you are an absolute delight and are going to have a wonderful life with your new family. 13.01.2022 Meet Benji Benji has had a few incidents on his walks in the past where dogs have intruded his space and barked at him or even lunged for him. This has now become an issue for Benji and his mum because every time a dog now barks at him on a walk whether the dog is on a lead or behind a fence, he gets very defensive and barks like crazy back at them and gets worked up which he never used to do. We have been working hard to make Benji feel more confident when out on his walk...s and desensitising him to dogs moving past him with or without barking any barking from them. We have also worked near houses that have dogs that do bark from behind the fence to ensure he feels more comfortable when hearing them bark at him and he can make a choice whether to react or not. He is showing great progress and is happily able to now move past houses where dogs are barking at him from behind a fence.
