25.01.2022 SPOT ON FISHING AND OUTDOORS PORT LINCOLN WEST COAST FISHING REPORT 17 DECEMBER 2020 We have had a few reports of close calls and one case of someone getting c...rab ropes caught on an outboard motor. Please make sure that your crabbing gear is legal, and your crab floats are at least above the surface and visible to other boaties. This week’s image is Andrew Dolman with a Bluefin Tuna caught on board GT Fishing Charters. Here’s what was biting and where. Coffin Bay The good Mulloway season continues for those that have bookings in Yalata. Plenty of legal fish are being landed by most groups. Fresh whole squid appears to be the gun bait. Offshore from Ceduna has seen plenty of Tuna captures over the last few weeks. Tuna movement south seems to be slow due to the water temps going up and down with the weather. Most of the beaches along the West Coast are good for Salmon to 3KG and there are still plenty of Gully Sharks and small Bronzies being caught. Venus and Streaky Bay has been good for just legal King George Whiting, Silver Trevally, Garfish, Tommies and Salmon Trout. Coffin Bay King George Whiting, squid, Silver Trevally and Salmon Trout have been available along the ledge and around town. Further out in the bay there has been some good Gummys and Bronzies in amongst the Eagle Rays. Farm Beach continues to hold many species. King George Whiting, squid, Silver Trevally, Garfish, Silver Whiting, Tommies, Gummies and Bronzies are the main targets. Offshore, when the wind permits, the fishing has been excellent. There seems to be plenty of Nannygai, Blue Morwong and other fish on most lumps. The Tuna that have been seen have mostly been around 5Kg, but there are a few bigger ones starting to show up in small patches. Port Lincoln First, the bad news. Blue Swimmer Crabs are still hard going. Small tides and water temps are making it tough going. They are there, and if you put in lots of effort, you can get a feed, but the water needs to warm up a bit still. On the other hand, King George Whiting, squid, Garfish, Silver Trevally, Kingfish, Tommies and Salmon are around in good numbers. My tip is to not trust the forecast, and look out the window to see what the weather is doing. If it looks OK, go fishing. Best areas for King George Whiting, have been Proper Bay around Grantham, Louth Bay and September to Carcase. Big Garfish are appearing in some areas, but finding a spot out of the wind is proving tough. Kingfish to over 1meter have been sighted in many areas. The Marina and Wharf have been the most common. Most have been in the 60-80cm range. Tumby Bay King George Whiting, squid, Silver Trevally, Garfish, Tommies and Snook have been landed from the jetty and in the Marina. Boaties fishing in close to Tumby have been doing well on the squid and King George Whiting. Port Neill/Arno Bay Not too many reports with the windy conditions, but there are King George Whiting, squid, Tommies and some big Garfish around both towns. You don’t have to go far from the shore to get a feed, whish is good when the wind picks up. Cowell- Blue Swimmer Crabs and Yellowfin Whiting in good numbers have been reported.
