20.01.2022 How true is this..

20.01.2022 Every single time I think this old, tired and pathetic dog myth has been thoroughly busted, I see (or hear) another uneducated individual giving out the same ri...diculous advice about how a huge part of dogs problems come from you not being a "pack leader". Some of these people even like to call themselves "trainers"! *deep breath*... For the 6th ballizonith time: THERE ARE NO PACK LEADERS. NO alphas. NO bid for top dog. NO your dog is not dominating you. NO guilty dogs. NO stubborn dogs. NO bad dogs. Period. Dont disappoint your dog, hire a qualified professional who understands that the only pack a dog ever needs is a training pouch packd with treats. -------------------------------------------------- More info here: https://www.whole-dog-journal.com//debunking-the-alpha-do/

17.01.2022 It is very sad and disappointing to see Channel 7 airing another so-called dog training show that uses force, intimidation and pain to bully dogs into submissio...n. It is 2019 and we know better! There is no need for this. Force-free, positive reinforcement methods work better and with fewer side effects. If you are looking for a qualified professional head to our website www.ppgaustralia.net.au. We also have resources for pet owners and a free pet owner membership. And maybe leave a comment on Channel 7 s facebook page that abuse in the name of training is not acceptable anymore. Edit: The PPGA website link above is incomplete. Our apologies for this. 13.01.2022 Oh my god, YES!!!!

12.01.2022 Training start postponed again - the wind is making it way too miserable for anyone to enjoy themselves today. Anyone able to do Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon 4.45 - 6pm for the first dog free class so we can get rolling?Or please comment in post what day you could do. Thanks

11.01.2022 For any dog owners out there that also have horses. Worth a read. A lot of people happily do positive reinforcement with their dogs, but dont quite get that with horses negative reinforcement is what is generally used. And it has been used for so long everyone just accepts that is how it is without questioning it. When what you get taught is wrong how do you know?

11.01.2022 A dog that is truly aggressive is thankfully quite rare. Reactive dogs, on the other hand, are quite common, but can be made into aggressive dogs by being const...antly put into situations that frighten them, without support from the person they should be able to trust most in the world - their owner. 09.01.2022 I threw this short list together based on the recent string of cases that I have been working over the last few months where these factors were involved. These ...are all very common contributing factors that can set dogs up for failure or result in an aggressive response. So what can pet owners do instead?! 1. Dont take a puppy who is fearful or shy around other dogs to the dog park. Its kind of like taking a shy librarian to a biker bar. An alternative would be to pair the dog with suitable, social playmates that can gently bring out play (preferably under the guidance of a professional and preferably one-on-one). 2. Dont chase a dog who just stole something. Doing so can inadvertently add value to the item, and cause the dog to use aggression to keep the highly coveted object. Swiping the object out of the dogs mouth and punishing them can make them more defensive. Instead, manage the items so the dog cant practice stealing them; teach the dog to bring those items to you for tasty treats (retrieve) in the event they get a hold of them; and teach the dog to voluntarily leave the items alone in the first place. If they get a hold of something dangerous (pill bottle, kitchen knife, your Uncles pot brownies), then its understandable to dive in and risk getting bitten. But if you do preventative training, you significantly reduce the potential for a bite. 3. Tight leashes are awfully restrictive. They can add frustration, remove flight options, and create confrontational body postures. While Im not a fan of on-leash greetings, they will happen in life, so keeping the leash loose (and the greetings really short) will help to prevent problems from occurring. 4. The last time the waiter tried to take my plate away when there were a few fries still left on it, I almost took his hand off. Taking a dogs food or toys away while they are enjoying them is quite similar. Instead, dropping higher value treats nearby on occasion will work in the same fashion as the waiter popping the hot fudge sundae right next to my plate of fries. 5. Guess who gets bitten the most? Thats right - kids! Kids can do awfully weird things to dogs sometimes, so it is vital we supervise them and teach them how to properly interact with dogs. FamilyPaws.com, LivingWithKidsAndDogs.com, and The FamilyDog.com all are chock full of information on how to keep kids safe! DISCLAIMER: If your dog is already displaying aggressive behaviors in these contexts, seek out the guidance of a professional who is experienced in aggression cases using positive reinforcement, desensitization and counterconditioning, or differential reinforcement. 01.01.2022 * How to make nail clipping a relaxed event for dogs * This little video shows my work with Otto who belongs to my partners mum Lindsey Mowbray-Williams Otto i...s an 11 year old Doberman and hes a living proof that you can teach old dogs new tricks Otto hasnt had any structured training prior ( he understands basic commands but constructive training hasnt been part of his daily life ) Ottos nails were a bit overgrown but because its been so stressful for both him and the owner to clip them his owner has been reluctant to have them done. In the past the owner had to restrain him (pin him to the wall and use her body weight to keep him still) while the groomer took as quickly as possible "to get it done with" . Ive spent 5 days working with Otto daily when during short sessions based on counter conditioning and positive reinforcement we worked over Ottos fear . There isnt any dramatic *before* video because simply it would be unfair to put him under the stress just to show how he reacted to it in the past - so at the begging of the video you will see a short clip of Otto avoiding/ walking away when I try to bring a clipper close to his leg. Ive used a stick to counter condition him to the sound of the nails being clipped - and I started at the distance where he was in a relaxed state . I slowly progressed with the distance where I could cut the stick right to his paw without him reacting and then introduced the *start signal* . The aim of the start signal is for a dog (or any other animal) to show that they are ready to voluntary proceed in whatever we want to train - its especially useful in husbandry and vet care procedures and it has been used across the world by ethical trainers. Otto learned that placing his paw on the book means that something will happen and through it he has a possibility to earn a reward. This way an animal can feel in control in the situation (even if its just an illusion of control) and therefore be more willing to participate voluntarily in procedures that would have otherwise caused alot of stress and negative emotions. I was pleasantly surprised to see how quickly hes learned and I managed to clip every single nail in all of his feet - I wodnered how would I do his back feet but used the exact same technique - the front paw on the book indicated that he was ready and gave me a green light to proceed. In the process he showed a bit of calming signals and displacement behaviours that i have been aware of so we know its still work in progress and his owners job is to handle his paws/nails daily with the techniques that I showed her making it more and more positive experience so when he needs more clipping hes even better prepared ;) See more
