24.01.2022 James has asked that I continue to share New Zealand with you all. Today I thought I'd look at Auckland, the city in which both James and I were born. Auckland is New Zealand's largest city but not it's capital. Situated in the northern end of New Zealand (about 2/3rds of the way up the island) it straddles a narrow isthmus and is a wonderful harbour city. Indeed it has two harbours the Manakau Harbour on the Tasman Sea and the Waitemata Harbour on the Pacific Ocean. Wit...h just over 1.6m people living in Auckland it is a vast city covering some 425.8sq meters. Much of Auckland is surburban with timber family homes while the city centre has more high density living. Many suburbs have access to the beach and I recall that it was only ever a short drive to find a sandy beach spot. Auckland has morphed into a very multi cultural city with a large Pacifica population as well as groups from all over Asia and beyond. This multicultural city boasts a vibrant cafe and restaurant culture supplemented by wonderful food markets. Auckland is often seen as the jump off point for visitors to the country, who often only spend a night or two in this city. With any big city there is the usual mix of retail and entertainment. There are many wonderful galleries and museums as well as beaches and bushwalking. However visitors from large Australian cities will notice a lack of public transport. It is best to plan ahead and work out how to get from A - B. Drive times are often slower than the same distance in Australia because the road system is quite congested and roads are narrower. I find that travelling around generally takes me twice as long as I would have expected. Strangely though, there is a very good harbour ferry service that can take visitors from downtown to the North Shore and a car ferry to Waiheke Island. Waiheke is in the Waitemata Harbour and is a favourite for visitors because it offers so many great experiences. I thought you'd enjoy taking a look at this island - and maybe put it onto your list of things to do the next time you are in Auckland. https://youtu.be/IvOkZXn1114 See more
18.01.2022 At Spot On Travel we have made the difficult decision to suspend our business to new clients until March 2021. Existing clients with bookings may still contact us. This decision was made because James was diagnosed with Cancer some 6 or so weeks ago and he is currently receiving intensive treatment. ... We look forward to working with all our clients after March 2021.
17.01.2022 As we anticipate extending Australia's borders to create a new Bubble with New Zealand James is keen to share more about New Zealand with you. Born and raised in the land of the long white cloud he really knows why you would love a holiday over the ditch. Check out the amazing scenery in this great video featuring skiing in Canterbury. https://youtu.be/Wo7lRx3KPBk
17.01.2022 We are beginning to dream of a day when we can explore the world again. It will take time, we need to be safe, but when the time does come it is quite likely our nearest neighbour will be the first overseas destination to open up to us. I often find that Australian's think NZ is much like Australia, but as a dual national I can tell you that this is far from the truth. Our neighbour NZ is a rare and unique country, with very different landscapes and people. I thought we'd start sharing some of NZ with you on a regular basis so you too can start dreaming .... https://youtu.be/SLwl2QaIFhc
15.01.2022 At Spot On Travel, we are constantly re-evaluating the nature of travel during this changing world. We are not alone, the Airline Industry is also being presented with concepts and options that they may - or may not adopt. Some of the concepts being presented are in the way of flight crew uniforms and in protection screens for passengers. What do you think of these?
06.01.2022 While I'm working from home I've rediscovered the joy of cooking with my family. We've even taken the time to learn new cooking skills. I thought I'd share this recipe from the chef from Ponant Cruising. https://www.calameo.com/read/000132423537065148a9b
04.01.2022 People travel for many reasons, but one thing we find that almost all travellers have in common is their desire to experience local food and drink. Food in NZ is plentiful and fresh, and the wine has a reputation as being World Best. Personally we enjoy tucking into food that we can't get in Australia, like Buzz Bars, Pinky Bars, Jelly Tip ice cream and of course roasted Kumara. I confess it is not exactly fine dining, but it is a taste of our other Homeland. https://youtu.be/hi5MPjbgj6c

03.01.2022 I am asking all customers from Spot On Travel to help. Recently Jim Aitken was diagnosed with Oesophageal Cancer and he has just completed radical Chemo and Radiation. Sadly he is seriously ill with suspected Endocarditis. With very limited family support I am trying to get permission for my mum to be allowed to come to Australia. Border Force have denied her application 2 tines without giving any reason. Please sign my petition. ... http://chng.it/gFryNprb

01.01.2022 Today we are dreaming of the Bay of Islands. Nestled in the north of the North Island, this remote area is a favourite holiday destination for many reasons. Historically you will find the beginnings of European settlement and the home of the Treaty House. Here you can enjoy an immersive experience with local Maori who will bring to life their history and traditions. In 2019 our family absolutely loved a Hangi and evening of cultural experiences at the Treaty House. Wande...ring back down to Pahia you can catch a ferry over to Russel, a beautiful town bursting with historic timber buildings, including churches which bare the scars of the Maori wars. Look for the grave of the two boys who drowned together and are buried together. If you prefer a bit of outdoor sport there are bike tracks, and of course all manner of cruises to sample. The Bay is literally full of islands, and you will be spoiled for choice when deciding how to explore them. https://youtu.be/Zk065jExozk See more
