22.01.2022 QUESTION : "in the biggest investment of your life, can you trust the workmanship that you're paying for?" - @timdmcmillan (Flashpoint 7 Plus episode on the Housing Crisis ). https://7plus.com.au/flashpoint). welcome to an open discussion around the Perth building bubble.... in the last 2 weeks, this has literally been the biggest question i have been asked and I'll tell you why. i have had at least 6 enquiries from businesses needing my assistance to help 'shape' their brand ahead of 2021, the only sticking point is that they are not available till mid Jan 2021. WAIT WHAT? a) that's smack bang in the middle of school holidays b) they are so busy, busy & unable to work on their business that any future proofing once this 'shitshow' (sorry guys, calling it how I see it) ends in March looks unlikely. is this you? have you accepted so much work you are unable to keep up with demand? the building grant is creating a false economy and the stories are flowing thick & fast about corners cut, poor communication, higher than usual margins (p*ss takingly so), quality & safety issues, and major delays in product & service. If clients are not happy to wait because of the time restrictions around the surplus, i'm afraid you need to assess what your brand stands for before your wheels start to come off. risking falling in a heap to service 'everyone' rather than maintain your standards of a narrower target market, the one you know without a shadow of a doubt you can service to exceptional standards can see big issues coming next year. namely poor reputation. the right clients will understand. i know, this sounds very 'ivory tower' of me, and the truth is, a lot of my 'workflow' is held up until next year because everyone has taken on so much work they have no time to maintain their own business. but that doesn't mean i will be available then. and i'm not running a business model that hinges on a building surplus. my point is; it is called a bubble for a reason. they pop all i want you to consider is whilst you have no time to show up, someone else will, and potentially, they will fill up their books next year with 'your' clients. comments welcome Deb x

21.01.2022 #perthkids __ until I was 27, I still had my barbie & the rockers [ how f*cking old are you Deb! ] sealed in their boxes. all 3. primo condition. unopened. protected from my younger brother with a penchant for mutilation. future collectors items. ... __ then dad called me in London to let me know, hed given my barbies & ENTIRE SMURF COLLECTION away to a good home. a lesson in what not to leave in the care of your father. __ but growing up, I never had a girls room. 17.01.2022 < startups > today I was asked what a startup in the interiors arena should do for their initial advertising? work hard. knowing what you stand for is absolutely crucial. your brand literally depends on it as it creates the ideal framework for any marketing. because advertising usually costs marketing is the focus of this post. : you will pay for it heavily in time & hard yards. factor that in.... ideally you have a niche of sorts & you know your audience so well - that your marketing is more like a personal conversation with them - directly. 1. FB. I know - unpopular, but it still outperforms it's counterpart & if optimised to look the goods (header, profile pic) it's easier to use it later for killer retargeting when you have 'advertising' dollars to actually spend. 2. IG. brilliant for instant views but don't jump into this water a) believing it will deliver you a client list b) thinking that likes equal clients c) unless you know why are you here - always! it's brilliant for B2B but don't compare. it's a false economy. instead, build relationships, referrals, knowledge, camaraderie. 3. PINTEREST . i'm terrible at it but in the design world this is not only a useful tool for inspo, moodboarding & research but also hits to site. please ALWAYS refer to the source if repinning or reposting pinned content. 4. CONTRIBUTE your knowledge to blogs or via articles. share wisdom, educate, create 'how to's' - share it all. 5. FORUMS. local forums are full of diversity & are opportunity rich. you are NOT there to sell. you are there to participate. 6. NETWORK. get out there. end of. 7. SUPPLIERS. this is a great place to build relationships & start cross-promoting. both 6 & 7 (offline) should always be done in tandem with online. thats my quick version. 16.01.2022 HANG UPS I currently have 8 prints that need frames, 1 painting & several pin boards to find homes for this weekend. It's an illness of sorts I think. Hoard all the things, and never ever get them on the walls.... Why? I lack both spacial & placial (f*ck off FB and stop trying to change this word to glacial !) awareness. In other words I can't space or place. I bundle and cluster, over size and under estimate, I undersize and over fill and then minimise and under frill. We got all our paint samples out British Paints Australia is our go to ( Bunnings Warehouse Australia) & created meals from our mobile pizza oven & cupcake stalls. Each card is a corresponding food yellow = and so on, you get the drill. We rolled the dice to decide how many ingredients to use or how many foods were on our fake shopping lists. 04.01.2022 < not going it a loam > nurtured design is the best way I can explain the offering at Loam . there was a huge gap in the #perthdesign market for an offering that would champion #australiandesign [ with locals Nathan Day Design & Jack Flanagan in-situ - so great to see their pieces with your own ] & pair it with just the right balance of contemporary #europeandesign to create that earthly hot bed we were so sorely missing. the collections throughout easily fitting a gall...ery or living room making this is a place where lovers of #authenticdesign can collide & unite. the space itself oozes lofty goodness but its the pieces throughout are something to get really excited about. yes the feet have made their much awaited return for 2020. thanks to Tide Design @lightly & @fogiacollection for meeting the palette brief. #spreadingroomers @ Loam with SIBA Interiors
