22.01.2022 Premiers Coding Challenge Congratulations to Mariah and Noah who were today announced as the winners of the Premiers Coding Challenge. Mariah won the individual Years 5-6 category and Noah won the Years 3-4 category. Every year the competition gets bigger and bigger and this year saw a record number of entries from schools all over Queensland. Students had to code an interactive and innovative digital solution to raise awareness of cybersecurity. Entrants could develop an ap...p, game, animation or website and they also needed to include a short video explaining their solution. Another one of our students, Nelson, also received a Merit award for his entry. All three students have spent many hours programming and fine tuning their solution and the complexity and skill level of their entries is truly amazing. It was a privilege to have our Assistant Regional Director in attendance to present the awards. Mariah, Noah and Nelson enjoyed sharing their coding entries with Mr Austen and appreciated his interest and intrigue in the current First Lego League challenges. Congratulations to our amazing students and thank you Mr Austen for joining us for the award ceremony. #cybersecureqld See more

16.01.2022 Hi everyone, Last week the students at SCSS were lucky enough to have an opportunity to tune in via a live collaborate session to listen to 3 Mystery Readers read one of The Children’s Book Council of Australia shortlisted books for Book Week. Our lovely Reading Rangers were invited to be the Mystery Readers this year, and had a fantastic time sharing books with the classes. If you are not familiar with our ‘Mystery Reader’ initiative, it began in 2019 as part of the Fest...ival of Learning week. We invite special guests to read a text to a class, this is filmed and put on our school YouTube channel. Before the Mystery Reader comes, the teacher gives three clues to the students and they have a guess as to who is coming. This generates excitement and contributes to our inquiry outcome for all students to have a passion for reading. The process in 2020 has changed slightly due to COVID, hence the live collaborate sessions. We are excited to share the below links to the recorded videos of the Mystery Readers, for you to view at home. My Friend Fred read by Mystery Reader - Ranger Mark https://youtu.be/2oKDlY037xw Hello Light House read by Mystery Reader - Ranger Gabrielle https://youtu.be/pD6QsmsR4XQ When Billy was a dog read by Mystery Reader - Ranger Marion https://youtu.be/XMa5JluaGJI We hope you enjoy listening to our Mystery Readers online. 04.01.2022 SCSS Families, A massive THANK YOU to all participants of our second ever Run for Fun Colour Explosion. We understand that this may not be possible for everyone and the fundraising efforts are greatly appreciated so please return these pledged amounts to the office in a ziplock bag or sealed envelope for processing by our volunteers. PRIZE ORDERING - To avoid disappointment once donating is closed, please ensure you have logged into your profile and made your selection by 11.59pm Friday 18th September, otherwise one will be chosen at random for you. 03.01.2022 Hands on learning in Maths helps students gain a deep mathematical understanding of the concepts being taught. It’s fun too! Here, Year One are manipulating objects to show their thinking in addition. Lots of peer talking to encourage explanation and the sharing of thinking.

03.01.2022 Building respectful relationships Parents and carers play an important role in helping children and young people recognise healthy, respectful relationships. Talking about interactions your family might see in the media and in everyday life, or regularly talking with your child about their friendships, can provide opportunities to positively influence their attitudes about respect.... Modelling how to respectfully disagree and encouraging your child to be aware of their feelings and the feelings of others is important at any age. With many changes to school routines this year, it’s understandable if your child is feeling overwhelmed or disengaged. You can help them regain a sense of stability by discovering ways to flip chaos on its head. #wethedifferents https://www.wethedifferents.qld.edu.au/flip-chaos-on-its-h/

03.01.2022 FESTIVITIES OF CHRISTMAS Springfield Central SS Dear Parent/Caregiver... With only 10 days remaining of the 2021 school year, we are experiencing the festivities of Christmas start to appear at school. This is a wonderful time of year for everyone and we encourage the demonstrations of material and verbal kindness and giving that we are seeing. One of the special traditions is writing end of year and holiday messages in cards and presenting them to friends and school staff with a candy cane. Students will be reminded at the upcoming assemblies that Candy Canes or similar items are not to be eaten during a school day. We encourage the children to bring them home to ensure you as parents have knowledge of and make the decisions around how many are devoured at once. Children are not permitted to bring in whole bags of candy canes and hand them out to friends, they need to be enclosed in an envelope. At this time of the year, we get many requests for class lists for parting cards and gifts. We understand the intent of the request is positive and thoughtful, however, due to privacy, we are unable to provide any lists of names of children. This is also a time when students and parents send in gifts of gratitude and appreciation to staff at the school. These are always much appreciated. There are a few things that I ask you to consider that breach departmental or whole of government policies or legislation: " Employees are unable to accept money in any form, this includes lottery tickets or scratchies. " Employees can accept a gift of appreciation over the value of $150, however, they must complete a declaration of gifts/benefits and discuss with the principal as all gifts received remain the property of the department unless deemed appropriate for the recipient to retain. (this sometimes happens when whole classes combine to present a gift to a staff member) If a gift over the value of $150 is received. The last ten days promise to be amazing days - we are so excited to be able to celebrate the efforts and achievements of the year with our students, staff an community. Kind Regards Mrs Gooley

01.01.2022 RAISING AWARENESS NOT ALERT Schools have been informed that there are currently ongoing cases of gastrointestinal illness among students in a number of facilities within South East Queensland Region. Because this condition is so easily transmitted the Department of Health have asked schools to help them raise awareness. It is very important as a prevention measure that any student or staff member who is unwell should be isolated or excluded from school until tey have complete...ly recovered and been completely free of symptoms for 48 hours. This will help reduce the spread of infections to others. The Public Health Act (2005) mandates that parents must not send a child to school if they have a contagious condition. Refer to Queensland Health (2020) Time Out: Keeping your child and other kids healthy. https://www.health.qld.gov.au//0/426820/timeout_poster.pdf I have attached for you the Information Sheet provided by Queensland Health.
