06.01.2022 While the major parties often like to treat firearm owners like second-class citizens, at KAP we stand up for law-abiding firearm owners. Just one example of th...at is we understand how difficult it is obtaining and maintaining a weapon's licence in Queensland. And we believe that needs to change. Katter’s Australian Party leader and Member for Traeger Robbie Katter MP has accused the Palazsczuk Labor Government of dragging out the publishing of a Queensland Audit Office report into the state’s beleaguered firearms registry until after the election, likely to avoid a political scandal. The Regulating Firearms report, due to be tabled between October and December, is focussed on assessing how effectively the Queensland Police Service regulates firearms in Queensland to ensure community safety. Mr Katter said every single person with a gun licence in Queensland around 280,000 people knew what a complete shambles the state’s Weapons Licensing Branch was in, and fully expected the report to contain a lot of uncomfortable truths. There are few things quite as frustratingly complex and bureaucratic as obtaining and maintaining a weapon’s licence in Queensland, Mr Katter said. We understand the checks and balances are in place for a reason, but the truth is it’s the good people who have a genuine need for a firearm like our farmers and hunters who are caught up and penalised in these processes. Everyone with a gun licence knows how incredibly inefficient Weapons Licensing are, for example PTAs can take a week or more for something that should be done instantly; licence renewals take months instead of a couple of days. Mr Katter said Weapons Licencing Branch (WLB) staffing levels had decreased while the number of licensed firearms owners in Queensland and the paperwork they must complete had risen. He described WLB as often unreachable by the public, even for simple queries or updates. People are beyond furious with the weapon’s licencing processes in Queensland, and of being demonised and made to feel like criminals, Mr Katter said. Weapons licence holders who try to do the right thing are not the problem in this state when it comes to gun violence and crime. Whenever governments want to make themselves feel good and look on tough on crime, they add more and more bureaucracy to the weapon’s licensing system. This is disingenuous, and does not make an iota of difference when it comes to community safety all it does it make life and livelihoods difficult to the point of impossible in rural and regional Queensland. Mr Katter said the Palaszczuk Government was likely dragging its feet on the report, ensuring it wouldn’t be released until after the election when it couldn’t embarrass them as much. The KAP Leader said Queenslanders deserved better than having an Auditor’s Report into something as important as firearms registration systems being quietly released after an election and in a period when the public and media were winding down for the year. #KAP #KAPteam #workingforyou
