23.01.2022 -- GENERATIONS IN JAZZ 2021 CANCELLED -- Generations in Jazz Board Chairman, Mr Peter Roberts, has today announced that the 2021 event, 30th April to 2nd May h...as been cancelled. This has been one of the most difficult and challenging decisions to make given the disappointment which will follow as a result. The Board has had significant discussion and deliberation over many months including consultation with SA Health and other relevant bodies before finally taking this action. It certainly doesn’t afford any of us any pleasure in making this announcement today knowing that it will bring great disappointment to our core market the schools, the local community for the economic impact and also the music loving public who support the event each year. Mr Roberts explained Generations in Jazz is an experience, only realised if you are at the event. It is the atmosphere created by the participants, public, guest artists, and community volunteers, all congregated in a unique rural setting no where else in the world does this happen. We just cannot deliver this experience in 2021 given the restrictions necessary to protect the health safety of our participants and equally as important the local communities. Schools travel from around Australia to share in this experience perform live in competitive awards, the cornerstone of the event, and enjoy and learn from the array of live Guest Artists and Workshop presenters. We are very aware that at present many school Music Programs have been seriously impacted by both Health and Education regulations leaving their future commitments to events in question for 2021 both in light of travelling for excursions and also their performance opportunities. The Board has given much deliberation and investigation into the possibility of a virtual online event to replace the physical event for 2021. However, the foundation of the event is based on the live experience, and the implications of the school’s Music Programs status at present are the underlying impetus for the decision not to pursue this concept. Mr Roberts acknowledged the support of many long-term sponsors and is confident that those relationships will be maintained as the organisation begins preparations for 2022. Like so many other organisations today, it is the responsibility of the Governing bodies to consider whether in all conscience they can deliver their event in the safest possible way for everyone who would be involved. The Board of Generations in Jazz are confident that they have made the right decision to cancel the 2021 event to protect the health safety of all those who would have been involved. They are now committed to future planning to bring the most spectacular event to all their supporters in 2022 to share once again in the joy of the Spirit of Generations".

09.01.2022 The Customs House in 1880, image courtesy HB Ballard. Built in 1863 by Mr. Francis Reynolds for 2605 (pounds), it housed the Harbour Master’s Office, Customs H...ouse, Court House, Post Office and residence, School Teacher’s residence, and Police Station and residence. The Post Office had a twelve-line telephone switchboard and alphabetically marked pigeon holes for mail. Telegrams came by ‘Morse Code’ to Mount Gambier and telephoned through to Port MacDonnell for delivery. Prison cells and stables were built at the rear of the building. Although the stables have been destroyed, the building still stands as a reminder of the busy trading port in years gone by. Built on such a grand scale, it was the only one of its kind in South Australia and as such, indicated confidence in the development of a significant port facility. Substantial additions and alterations to the complex were made in 1874 and 1938. The Customs House accommodated the Police Station until 1958 when a new station was built in Charles Street. It was used as a restaurant for several years and is now privately owned and operated as a B&B by the Fensom family. See more
