14.01.2022 I SPY PHOTO HUNT PUZZLE ANSWER! Thank you to all our SECRET AGENT SPY CHASERS who have been waiting ever so patiently! Mrs Field has solved the Cryptic PUZZLE! Mrs Field and her team gathered all the clues and started grouping photos accordingly and realised that if she took the first letter from each photo it would then form a word... Mrs Field had to do some deep thinking to form words it was all like a jigsaw puzzle but she got there in the end. Now to form a sentence. Thinking cap on for Mrs Field and her team. Hours and then days passed and finally a sentence was created. Everyone celebrated! YAY! However something just didn't sit right with Mrs Field as there were some random photos that didn't fit into a particular group of letters. Mrs Field went quietly to her office and had a another go ... Moments later she came out of her office with a huge smile and told her team of agents at headquarters to let each SECRET AGENT know the answer to the puzzle is: EVERY MOMENT AN INVITATION TO. Have Fun and Laugh Enjoy The Sun Being Outside Enjoy Beauty Recycle Go For a ride To Rest And Dream! And that is exactly what Mrs Field did - Mrs Field now invites you to take every moment as an invitation to .... (you fill in the blank).

10.01.2022 With the year changing our usual trajectory, we have been welcoming our new Kindergarten children for 2021 on a Saturdays. We have held a number of play dates, where children and families have been able to engage with others and connect with SSC. The play dates have created wonderful opportunities to connect and be informed of children needs and current interests, while families have been able to discuss concerns and ask questions. Children were given a kinder pack to take home, which contained valuable information, a book in their home language and a map of SSC. We will continue this partnership by continuing the play dates in early January.

10.01.2022 After 6 weeks of working from home and on-site, our educators have been able to reflect on current practices, review policy, work on areas of our QIP and be inspired to enhance their professional knowledge to ensure better outcomes for children. We are so very proud of the ongoing commitment and resilience of our team during a very difficult time.

10.01.2022 Books can be an amazing learning tool and something that has been very beneficial while children were learning from home. Have any of you heard the phrase’ going beyond the book?’ Well it’s a phrase I use a lot and I’m really not sure if I invented it or I’ve heard it or read it somewhere in my work. Story time can have different purposes and meanings for all of us as teachers, whether it’s for enjoyment, to provoke new learning or to assess existing learning. Whatever the r...eason, books ofter amazing opportunities to go further than the story itself. Recently, I had a discussion around the idea of developing a curriculum around a particular book. Some of you may have already heard or know about Fleers ‘conceptual PlayWorlds’ well, this idea is very similar to this concept. As a team we looked at a book called ‘Family’ by Aunty Faye Muir and Sue Lawson. This was quite timely as many of the children had returned after stage 4 lockdown, so ‘family’ was a great topic to unpack. Looking through the pages we could see many ideas that could shape our curriculum, however we really wanted to gain ideas from the children themselves first. ‘Going beyond the book’ starts with having an open mind and seeing the book through the eyes of the children. Rather than reading the book, we waited for children’s responses to the images and colours as we turned the pages. Occasionally we became the provocateur saying what do you notice or image if you were there, what would you do, think or feel? The information taken from the voices of the children were then used to create the curriculum. For instance, within the book there was a picture of a family gathered around a fire. The conversations amongst the children was about what they might be doing, however one child said I would feel warm and happy, everyone is happy. Feelings when we are with our family was a feature of our program that week. I’ve used the idea of ‘going beyond the book’ previously using the book ‘Ssh’ by Sally Grindley. I have to say that this is a book that has captivated children’s imagination over the years and been a big favourite for many, including the teachers themselves. When using this book I have used the idea of suspense with a hint of silliness to inspire and motivate learning. The use of I wonder and what do you think were questions I’d use and I’d even ask the children to think of other characters that could be in the book. It’s been quite enlightening to listen to the children thoughts and insights. ‘Going beyond the book’ is a great teaching strategy to use when assessing children’s comprehension and mean making skills, but it’s also really enjoyable to do more than just read the book. 09.01.2022 Today and over the next few days we will welcome around 80 new families into our 4 year old Kindergarten program at SSC. With such an unprecedented year last year, where children and families had to deal with so much unpredictability and change, we wanted to create a welcoming entrance that provoked curiosity and amazement. It was an invitation for children and families to take their time and spend as much time as they needed on their first day. For some of the children it will be the first time away from their family, and so the time spent together during the first few sessions is so important. We are very excited for the year ahead and we are looking forward to developing wonderful relationships with all our new families, while building on the relationship we have with our current families.

07.01.2022 The thought of starting school can bring about many feelings for children, whether excitement or trepidation, the thoughts going through children’s minds over the next few months will be a consideration for many teachers. Here at SSC we have been asking children what they hope to see when they see their school for the first time. It’s quite enlightening to hear their ideas and feelings on the subject. It was very clear that their understanding was shaped by their growing ima...gination and also the influential people in their lives. The expectation to learn numbers, read books and play in the playground was very prominent in their conversations as well as the idea they will have to wear big kids outfits, have the opportunity to see animals and experience beautiful things. We will continue to learn more about the children’s feelings of starting school, while also connecting with our local schools to support children’s continuity of learning. See more

05.01.2022 A baby’s brain is a remarkable little creature forming more than a million neural connections every second when activated. Babies learn through spending time with their parents and other special people in their life. We’ve created Bobbie to show us all the emotions, thoughts and responses that happen in a child’s brain when a baby experiences meaningful moments. These meaningful moments, especially if they occur early in a child’s life and often, build strong brains, providing a strong foundation for their life. Download the Bright Tomorrows app today to receive access to over 1000 meaningful moments and tips to help build young brains. #thrivebyfive#. https://thrivebyfive.org.au/

04.01.2022 ‘Zoom’ a new concept that has enabled connection, when our means of communication have been limited. For children ’Zoom’ has bought about many ideas and connotations, evolving around language, magic and movement. After recently receiving a letter and gift from Wee Care kindergarten in Bondi, we wanted to send a Zoom meeting invite, so that we could meet all the children and teachers. The invite inspired children’s ideas of how ‘Zoom’ works.

03.01.2022 Children have been creating their own landscape here at SSC, using their talents, imagination and learning of sustainability. Educators have supported children to plant new seedlings, make bird baths and develop a path to walk along. This is the beginning of a larger project, which will involve the local school children and children here at SSC.

03.01.2022 We want children to be healthy and happy, not just now but for the rest of their lives. And teaching them about meditation early can help them do just that, especially during the stresses of the recent pandemic. Here at SSC, children have been participating in meditation through stories and yoga everyday as part of the curriculum. The stories that have been used in the meditation have been developed by the children themselves, using their ideas and experiences over the day. ...Children have been going on mindfulness walks in our garden to inspire ideas for the stories, which have included things such as rainbows, flowers and birds. Our amazing educator Jill believes that offering children time to ‘just be’ and relax their busy minds has supported them to regulate emotions during this difficult time and enabled them to develop concentration, while also exploring an imaginary world through a sense of calm and stillness See more
