03.01.2022 LEADERSHIP What qualities do all the great teams possess? Aspiring leaders take the time to read of the below article, I found it really interesting and parts of it ring true for even amateur level sport! "These captains were willing to do whatever it took to help the team win, whether they got credit for it or not," ... "You have to really be willing to sacrifice of yourself and then do all those little acts of service and labour behind the scenes to help the team." https://www.abc.net.au//what-makes-a-great-sport/12454814

03.01.2022 Hamstring injuries Hamstring strains are extremly common which can be seen in the AFL since the restart (11 injuries in 18games!!). Through appropriate loading and exercise prescription the risk factors for hamstring injuries can be significantly reduced. At @spr_conditioning we screen our athletes regularly at the start of sessions to ensure there isn't any extra tightness that could lead to injury if not addressed. ... We also build in various muscle contraction types , running mechanics and load management into each athletes weekly program to ensure they stay healthy through their season. 01.01.2022 Agility is an athlete’s ability to stop and start, the accumulation of acceleration, deceleration, and change of direction or movement. Now imagine what you often see during a ladder drill, the athlete completing the exercise like a tap dancer with a high hip position the furthest from their sporting position. This may look impressive but has little effect on speed and agility related to sport. REAL agility training involves change of direction with a reaction component. At... SPR conditioning we use both verbal and hand cues for our clients when completing agility drills. We will never use a ladder to improve an athlete’s agility, instead we use reaction agility paired with plyometric and strength exercises. To not completely discredit ladder training it does have a number of uses such as general conditioning and improving economy of movement (reduce wasted energy/ motion). 01.01.2022 Junior Strength and Conditioning People are quick to throw children into skills without providing the core foundation movements first. Over the last 3 weeks @jordanpowell12345 and I have been working on our hinge pattern to perform a straight bar deadlift. The @spr_conditioning approach allows youth athletes to be confident in their bodies first before putting them into complex movements like a deadlift. Video 1: light kettlebell deadlift moderate cueing. ... Video 2: Heavier kettlebell less cueing Video 3: Straight bar deadlift little cueing. #trainwithspr #athletedevelopment #youth #strengthandconditioning #deadlift #changethegame #dontrush #youthsnc #SPR See more
