15.01.2022 We're currently in the process of exploring Telehealth options at present, with trials of some sessions to begin tomorrow. At the moment, we'll be trialing Zoom for some appointments, although other options may present as more viable as they emerge. For the time being, assessments will still proceed in person.... Stay tuned!
14.01.2022 With the emergence of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) as a serious public health concern, Sprout Child and Family Psychology has taken on the following advice with respect to public safety and wellbeing. In order to minimise the spread of the virus, we ask that if you have any of the following symptoms, that you please advise us that you cannot attend your scheduled appointment: - fever, - cough,... - shortness of breath, - sore throat, or - breathing difficulties. Additionally it is recommended that you call on 3447 0124 or email [email protected] to reschedule your appointment if you are concerned that a family member may be showing these symptoms. If youre visiting in-clinic, it is requested that you ensure that you wash your hands using either the bathrooms or the provided hand sanitiser gel. Surfaces within the office will be regularly disinfected to minimise the risk of spread, and as an added precaution, we have removed the toys from the waiting area. If you need to sneeze or cough, it is recommended that you cover your nose and mouth with tissue or a flexed elbow. If using a tissue, dispose of it in the rubbish bins provided. Further information about management for COVID-19 is available at https://www.health.gov.au/, and we will endeavour to provide updates as they come to hand.

12.01.2022 We know this is easier said than done, but there is an opportunity for adults to model coping in the face of stress and resilience in the face of adversity. We will continue to share resources here that may be helpful to all kinds of families in these uncertain times.
12.01.2022 "Kids wont become resilient simply through their experiences; theyll build their resiliency, in part, through our emotional response to their feelings."
09.01.2022 Hi everyone! The website for Actively Balanced Kids went live last night and is now open for enrolments. On the website you can book directly for classes, as we...ll as information about the program. In addition we have included some parent resources that you can download and try out at home. We also have links to some of the academic journal abstracts we have used in order to make the program evidence driven. If you enrol for a term, we will provide you with a parent resource pack which has been specially designed by Ben (Child Psychologist) to help ensure you get the most out of the program. The pack consists of the Parent Resource Manual that accompanies the program, covering many of the skills the children learn in class, in addition to extra tools that you can use within your home to assist in building emotional recognition and regulation, and improving resilience skills. 07.01.2022 BREAKING: Heres our back to school plan for Queensland students. Students in Kindy, Prep, Year 1, Year 11 and Year 12 will return to school on May 11, while s...tudents in Years 2 to 10 will continue remote learning at home. We will review the situation on May 15, with the goal to return the remaining students on May 25 if low COVID-19 transmission rates continue. Children of essential workers and vulnerable children are still able to attend school. A sensible and gradual return is only possible because of Queenslands success in slowing the spread of COVID-19. Compare our efforts to what has happened in other parts of the world and Queenslanders should feel very proud. Keep up the good work! #coronavirus
06.01.2022 Today we wanted to show you a video of Skye providing children with a step by step guide to completing the bridge pose. We will be providing over 60 yoga poses for kids to learn on ABK online.
06.01.2022 Amanda and myself have been working for over the last year to develop a brand new, unique mental health program for children. Its a program is called Actively Balanced Kids, which is designed and written children between the ages of 4 and 12 years of age. We are officially launching it today. The program has been written by us (a Child Psychologist and Medical Librarian) and utilises the best evidence available to create a group-based program that incorporates child-friendly... yoga, movement, mindfulness, breathing and relaxation techniques woven throughout fun, original and engaging childrens stories. The program has a range of benefits for children including better attention and focus, improving self-regulation and self-confidence, helping to manage stress and anxiety, and improved resilience. If everyone could like and share our post on Facebook and Instagram that would be fantastic and extremely helpful! You can find more about the program at https://activelybalancedkids.com.au
06.01.2022 Cognition & Emotion, Vol 31 (7), 2017, pp 1502-1510. Khng found that deep breathing techniques taught to primary school children improves performance and reduces anxiety in test-like situations.
05.01.2022 Self harm can be a scary problem for young people and their families, but it is manageable. One part of the process, alongside therapy is teaching techniques to help cope with strong feelings. A really easy-to-use and nicely designed app to help "ride the wave" is Calm Harm. More information is available at https://calmharm.co.uk/, and the app is available on both the Apple (https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/calm-harm/id961611581) and Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details) stores.
05.01.2022 We cant wait to finally launch in term 3! Only two weeks to go
04.01.2022 Whilst spending time with our children on holidays can be rewarding, it can also be super-taxing at times as well. The Triple P program is still offering free online access to Queenslanders, and the best things is, you can do the program in your PJs https://www.triplep-parenting.net.au//fin/triple-p-online/
03.01.2022 Words matter. If youre experiencing a strong emotion, take a moment to consider what to call it. But dont stop there: once youve identified it, try to come ...up with two more words that describe how you are feeling. You might be surprised at the breadth of your emotionsor that youve unearthed a deeper emotion buried beneath the more obvious one.

01.01.2022 Actively Balanced Kids child psychologist Ben Tuppack has a few tips to help parents who have started or preparing to start home schooling from tomorrow. 1. No ...pressure. Just remember that youre not your childs classroom teacher, and that you dont have to make any key performance indicators, including the ones you set for yourself. Learning happens best when children are settled and relaxed. 2. Get creative. Employ movement in ways like rolling out letters for prep students using play-dough, or having older children shoot letters to spell words using NERF guns. 3. Children can often hyper-focus on tasks they find interesting but distractions are plenty with tedious tasks. Think about your childs individual interests and the things they may find tougher are there any ways that you can use their interests to help get them through the tougher areas?
