22.01.2022 Nomination for Surf Life Saving SA’s Rescue of the Month Port Noarlunga Jetty Tuesday 22 December 2020 South Port members were celebrating Leo Oliver’s (SRC) 14th birthday including close mates Mali Gilligan (13), who had only just gained his SRC on the weekend, and Damon James (SRC) (14) and decided to head to the local bakery.... Seeing it was a nice day they decided to walk to the Port Noarlunga jetty at approx. 3pm. Water conditions were choppy with wind at 30km in a south-westerly direction. The boys walked to end of the jetty when they heard someone screaming for help. It was a male snorkeler 30/40 years caught in a rip yelling that he can’t swim. All the boys knew they had to help the person in trouble. Without thinking, their Surf Life Saving training kicked in with them realising they needed to act fast as the man had now started to panic. He was about 50m north of the jetty, 20m from reef and 300m offshore. Mali Gilligan yelled out to the man reassuring him that they had seen him, to not panic and they were coming to assist. Leo Oliver had noticed the rescue buoys attached to the jetty so ran to the closest one to grab it. There was a struggle to remove the buoy from its housing and once removed, the boys we were unsure if there was enough rope attached to reach the man as he was still drifting away from the jetty. They decided the best option was to undo the rope while on the jetty to enable them, if required, to proceed further to affect the rescue with two members of the public assisting to untie the buoy. Leo Oliver entered the water with the buoy and swam toward the patient. At this stage the patient was now struggling in the water. After reaching the patient and remembering all their training, Leo Oliver reassured the patient and passed the buoy to the patient making sure not to get too close for his own safety if they panicked. Both Mali Gilligan and Damon James were able to reassure the man from the jetty and using the jetty as a platform were able to maintain a line sight to the patient helping guide Leo Oliver back to the jetty. Once the man was able to grab the buoy and was secured, Leo began to swim the man back to the jetty stairs. Exhausted from the swim, Leo passed the rope to Mali and Damon who assisted in pulling the patient to the jetty stairs. Once on the jetty, the boys continued to monitor the patient with Damon asking the patient questions to make sure he was ok, such as if he had swallowed any water or was he feeling unwell. The boys escorted him back along the jetty then down onto the beach where he had left his gear with the boys continuing to asked if he was ok. Patient declined any further help and remained at the beach. HUGE congratulations and thanks to Leo, Damon and Mali for assisting the patient who may have lost his life if the three young men hadn’t taken control of the situation.

20.01.2022 The South Port Boaties are running the Boaties Supporter Club again this year, please see attached flyer. They are hoping to raise funds for a new set of oars for the Wal but unless they can raise as much as possible of the $6000 for the new set, they may not be able to order them. I know this year has been tough for a lot of people but everybody might know someone or a business that is able to help them out. As they say many hands make light work. 19.01.2022 With the 60th Anniversary season slowly creeping by, and with the approach of what will be a wet, cold and potentially "isolated" winter, this is a great opportunity to look back over the season! Of particular note from my work this year is the support and sponsorship the Club has received. I would like to take an opportunity to list our supporters here, and if you need any of these products or services just remember - small business needs support too!... Give our local businesses, especially those involved with South Port, whatever support you can. Bec Brook - Publicity/Social

15.01.2022 Sad news with the passing of Don 'Bristles' Alexander last night. 'Bristles' joined South Port in 1959/60, was a Foundation Member of the Club and awarded Life Membership in 1975. Besides being Club Treasurer for 20 years, he also held numerous other positions including Boat Captain, Head Coach, Publicity Officer, Bar Manager and was a regular Patron of the Club's winter swimmers, the South Port Shivering Shags!... 'Bristles' was a long time 'boatie ' from mainly a sweeping perspective, but was also more than able to pull an oar being successful with Masters crews winning successive gold medals in the 220 division in the SA State Champs. He swept Junior, Open Women and Masters crews to numerous medals and in particular Open Women's State Champs in 2002, 2004, 2009 and 2012, with his crews making the last 10 at two Australian Championships. He was a member of the SA State Team on eight occasions, two being Manager. Not known to many 'Bristles' was also a committed March Past member winning two Australian Bronze medals for South Port in 1997 and 1998! Don 'Bristles' Alexander's wisdom, humour, leadership and quiet demeanour will be sadly missed by all of us at South Port and beyond. A Club and State send off will be arranged when the family advises and members will be invited to say their goodbyes to an absolute legend of South Port Surf Club. RIP ' Bris' Dick 'Olly' Olesinski Club President This sad news will hit a lot of us hard, if anyone needs some support, please do not hesitate to contact someone at the Club, we are all here for each other.

13.01.2022 First Day of Nippers!! It’s finally here! Nippers season starts today. Given all the changes in the world due to COVID, we thought we would give you a heads up on the changes on the beach for Nippers this season. Please be early to help adjust to the following changes;... Sign in this year will be on the beach with Age Group Managers, under Age Group Flags, to avoid multiple people using the one pen and so on. Nippers will begin on the beach, not up the top. There won’t be Age Group buckets this year, please make sure each child has a bag for their own gear, goggles, towel, water bottle, sunscreen, hi vis and so on. We will have an ‘Area Of Play’ that will be loosely bunted off. To comply with our COVID management plan, we ask only Nippers, Age Group Managers, Water Cover and Assigned helpers enter this area. Presentations will be done on the beach at the end of Nippers. The children do not have to socially distance while in the ‘Area Of Play’, so easier for presentations. Please avoid hanging around inside the Club prior to Nippers start, we need to remember to socially distance. Welcome to stay after for a beverage and sausage sizzle. Please look for and follow all our new signs, to comply with our COVID Management Plan. We have designated entry and exit points, as well as other signs regarding conditions of our COVID Management plan. There are other smaller changes that we will alert everyone to as we go. We ask for your help and co-operation in dealing with these changes and finding a ‘new normal’. Let’s all work together to make this a great season at South Port! Look forward to seeing you all on the Beach! Go South Port! Alex Botha Junior Coach

12.01.2022 The Time Is Near! Nippers Returns 17th October! The first day of Nippers will be on the 17th October, starting at 2pm. Please be there by 1:30, due to COVID we have a few changes to the way things will run, so as to comply with restrictions so we will need your cooperation as we all learn these new processes.... Look forward to seeing you there and working together towards another great Nipper season. If you have any queries please contact us at [email protected]. Alex Botha Junior Coach

The lucky 500th member to register for season 2020/21 was the beautiful Carla Zeitz! Congratulations Carla on being responsible for that magical milestone! ... We currently sit at 509 fully registered members, which eclipses last season's Club record for membership of 487 members. 01.01.2022 A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to our own Jacasta Hammond who has been selected to attend the SLSA National Leadership College in Camperdown, NSW from 31 January - 6 February 2021. Only 30 participants from SLS clubs around Australia have been chosen! Just a bit of background about the program....... The National Leadership College (NLC) is an annual leadership and development program recognising young leaders in surf life saving aged between 20 - 30 years of age. Participants come fr...om a variety of clubs, roles and SLS backgrounds. The NLC provides an exciting opportunity for members within the movement to further develop their leadership skills and continue to positively contribute to the success of SLS. As well as learning new skills and creating opportunities for personal growth, NLC will open new networks with other likeminded passionate members across the country. The NLC is designed to challenge participants intellectually, socially, emotionally and physically. The skills gained are designed to be taken back to clubs and into other areas of the participant's daily life with the aim of contributing to SLSA's mission statement of saving lives, creating great Australians and building better communities. Each day of the program includes keynote speakers, elective sessions, activities and challenges relating to the leadership theme of the day. Each participant is allocated a mentor and have ongoing opportunities for review and further development. On behalf of the Board of Management and also our members, congratulations Jacasta! We wish you all the best for this wonderful and exciting opportunity! Regards Nicole Berry Secretary
