14.01.2022 :: FARM FRIENDLY FENCING :: Our own project officer Isabella Murphy was out and about last week, and had the pleasure of meeting Mr Frank Roche, from Maryvale. Frank is working with SQ Landscapes to continue constructing riparian fencing and off stream watering points to exclude his cattle from watering and camping in the creek. ... By minimising cattle disturbance along the waterway, he hopes to re establish ground cover which will minimise erosion, prevent silting up of the creek, and hold the banks together in the event of a flash flood. It’s always great to work with such enthusiastic and hardworking landholders like Frank! Supported through the Natural Resource Investment Program. Land Queensland
09.01.2022 A warm thank you to Hamish McIntyre, Chair of Cotton Australia who dropped by an SQ Landscapes Board meeting in Roma recently to present the industry’s approach to carbon in the production cycle. Mr McIntyre shared how cotton farms can be carbon neutral through careful land use management and gave examples of reduced farm emissions through holistic crop rotation systems, selective grazing and maintaining healthy vegetation zones. 04.01.2022 :: A HIVE OF ACTIVITY :: Last week Millmerran Landcare and Pittsworth Landcare Groups hosted native bee experts and advocates Matthew and Juliet from BeeZotted. On Friday we learned about the different species over 1700 in Australia - and their habitats and needs both in the bush and in our backyards. The most widely known is the native stingless bee (Tetragonula carbonaria), also known as sugarbag or bush bees it forms hives and produces honey. The majority of na...tive species are solitary bees after mating, the females build a solitary nest, often in clay soil. On Saturday we walked through a patch of box and gum trees and learned how to find hives and spot other bee and insect activity. The top tip from Matthew: Try to think like a bee! Look for food sources such as flowers and resin. Large or hollow tree trunks and logs are perfect spots to build a hive. Sitting still, listening and looking carefully will reward you with sightings of many different bees and insects. As well as their vital role as pollinators, native bees and insects are important parts of our ecosystems. Our Condamine #RALF Anita and Project Officer Natasha attended the workshops and are now very keen to try out their new skills!
