25.01.2022 The warmer weather is upon us. It’s important we look after our own and our fellow workers health and wellbeing. Here are some practical tips for workers to prevent heat-related illness:... Ensure you are well hydrated before you commence work and are fit for work. Eat regular meals and snacks to help replace salt and electrolytes lost through heat. Notify your employer if you have a medical condition that may increase your susceptibility to heat-related illness such as heart disease, high blood pressure, pregnancy, respiratory disease and diabetes. Follow your employer’s instructions and comply with any safety requirement that protects you from exposure to heat such as wearing specialised cooling and/or personal protective clothing. If working outdoors, always wear a hat, sunglasses, and apply sunblock regularly. Take regular breaks to cool down and seek shelter in air conditioned or well-ventilated environments where possible. Drink enough water while working to maintain fluid replacement at least a small cup (200ml) of cool (not cold) water every 15 20 minutes. Avoid soft drinks, caffeine or alcohol as these can dehydrate you very quickly. If working outside without access to an air conditioned or cool rest area, carry your water and drinks in a portable esky with ice. 18.01.2022 Be job interview ready. You've applied for a job, and now it's time for the interview. To help you show up and be your best, here's a few helpful tips when it comes to the interview.... Find out about the company and give them a feel for how well you know them - weave this information through the interview and show how serious you are about the position. Practice answering questions - get a friend or family member to pretend to interview you or practice your answers in front of a mirror. Wear suitable clothing related to the job you are applying for - no matter what you wear, make sure it is clean, without holes or tears, missing no buttons, and is not wrinkled. Allow extra time to get to the interview - being punctual is key, arrive approximately 10 minutes before the interview starts. Be friendly to the receptionist or anyone you meet prior to the interview - they might provide your interviewer with feedback on your attitude and enthusiasm. During the interview, be sure to make eye contact, smile and nod your head - be aware of your body language, don’t slouch or look uninterested. It's always good to think of couple of questions beforehand to ask the interviewer at the end of your interview. 17.01.2022 It’s no secret you’ll need a resume for almost any job application. But, what are the essentials you should include? Let’s break this down:... Personal info Include your full name and contact information, both your phone number and email address are recommended. An intro summary Think of this as an opportunity to introduce yourself. If you’ve recently left school or perhaps you don’t have much professional experience yet, talk about your current skills and your work ambitions. Don’t discount your prior work experience, or be shy in being bold with your career ambitions. This is your chance to stand out. Education List your most recent education experience first and then work backwards. For each experience include the qualification you achieved, and both where/when you studied here. Work experience When listing your experience, be sure to include a brief overview of your responsibilities and achievements, weaving in the skills you used. Take the time to think about the impact you had in the role day-to-day. Have you volunteered, or interned previously? Include this here too. References Be sure to ask your referee’s ahead of time, and if they agree include contact and company details for them. You could ask a former employer or manager, or if you’re involved with any community efforts, an associate here. Keep your resume short and sweet, aim for two pages tops so you can make a good impression.
