21.01.2022 MEET TERRY! (Senior Head Coach) WHY DO YOU LOVE SQUASH? Dad took my brother and I to watch him play at the Moonee Ponds club. I thought it looked exciting and ...fell in love with it straight away. I was hooked the first time I tried it, hooked forever from that moment. Squash is my life, my lifestyle, my work, my passion. I love the people, it has been my friendship-base. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A MEMBER OF GPJSC? l started there as the junior coach back in February 1981 and it’s just as exciting today to be involved with GPJSC. I’m very grateful and privileged to be involved with this club and I’m confident the coaching team all feel the same. WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY SQUASH BUT HAS NEVER TRIED IT BEFORE? Just grab a friend, get on the court and play! Don’t overthink it, just have fun! WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST UPON OUR RETURN TO SQUASH AFTER LOCK-DOWN? The connection with the squash community, getting back to the comps, the people, coaching the kids again, all of it! I can’t wait to get on that court and have a hit too, I’m feeling like an old bastard! TELL US ABOUT A SQUASH HIGHLIGHT/MEMORY. A recent highlight was taking Dylan Molinaro and Toby Moore to the Scottish Junior Open and British Junior Open. I’ve worked with them for many years and they were competing in the under-19 event, which is the last junior level. To be there with them at such a time and at these prestigious events was very special. WHO IS YOUR SQUASH HERO/FAVOURITE? After 40 years of playing, coaching and watching the world’s best players, it’s difficult to pick my fav / hero. In women’s squash I’d have to say Sarah Fitz-Gerald because I’ve known her since she was 13 or 14. I watched her become a giant in the sport and such a great ambassador for squash. Melody Francis was one of my favourite Victorian girls who l coached from a young age. Today she inspires me through her ongoing commitment to junior squash in NSW, after retiring from international competition ranked in the top 30. In the men’s there are too many players to mention here, I’ve watched so many of them from a young age. To name a few, there is Geoff Hunt, such an amazingly humble player. There is Johnathon Power, Cameron White, Paul Price, Anthony Hill Australia has produced many brilliant players over these years and l hope we keep it up. Maybe one of our kids from GPJSC 2020 can make it to be a professional player. Gladstone Park Junior Squash Club (Inc.) 20.01.2022 Belgium's Tinne Gili was too strong for Australia's Sarah Cardwell (Pictured) Australian duo Donna Lobban and Sarah Cardwell competed strongly before dropping out in the early rounds of the CIB Egyptian Open earlier this week. Cardwell dropped her match with Belgium's Tinne Gilis 3-0 on Saturday, while Lobban went down to the second-seeded Nour El Sherbini from Egypt in the second round.... Gilis launched out of the box with an impressive first game 11-3 to have Cardwell on the back foot. The 18th ranked Belgium stormed away to take game two 11-2 before closing out the contest to win 11-4 Tinne Gilis (BEL) defeated Sarah Cardwell (AUS) 3-0 11-3, 11-2, 11-4 Lobban started the competition off in fine touch against Egypt's Menna Hamed. The 21st PSA ranked Australian dropped the opening game against the 52nd PSA ranked Egpytian 5-11 before storming back with a gutsy 14-12 win in the second game. Lobban continued the momentum into the third, winning 11-4 before Hamed powered home to take the fourth, 11-9 to set up a grand-stand finish in the fifth. Both players traded blows in a back-and-forth decider before Lobban got the edge that she needed to win 11-9 in a five-set classic. Donna Lobban (AUS) defeated Menna Hamed (EGY) 3-2 5-11, 14-12, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9 It was a tough second round for Lobban against the 2nd ranked player in the world, Nour El Sherbini of Egypt. Lobban went down to Sherbini in Chicago earlier this year in four games and was determined to step up the intensity and reverse the 3-1 result. Sherbini was too strong across the match, holding out Lobban in three games to advance to the third round. Nour El Sherbini (EGY) defeated Donna Lobban (AUS) 3-0 11-6, 11-6, 11-8 Sherbini easily accounted for Canadian Danielle Leourneau in the third round quite comfortably 3-0 and takes on India's Joshna Chinappa tomorrow night from 6pm (Egyptian time) in the Quarter Finals. #squashgirlscan #squashinaustralia #squashoznation

15.01.2022 | The Squash and Racquetball Committee met this afternoon to discuss the 2020 Adelaide Spring Pennant season. The Committee decided on the below timeline;... If the Government restrictions are lifted allowing people to play indoor sport from , the current top 2 teams in each division will play a Grand Final (on their usual playing night) the week of the . This will give players nearly a week to organise a team practice or two. If the Government restrictions are on Tuesday 1 December, the current top team in each division will be awarded the Premiership. Squash SA will give more details on team photos and prize collection the 1st December. The Committee understands that not all players will be happy with this outcome, but we hope you can understand the reasoning behind this decision, and accept that this has been a very difficult year. The Committee also decided to which was originally rescheduled to be played on 4/5 December. This decision was based on the current need for interstate players to quarantine/isolate on their return to their home state, and that local players have not had the opportunity to be match ready for this event #SquashinAustralia #squashinsa #covid19australia #covid19aus #squash #fitness #tournament #elite #community #postponed Squash SA

We have some good news for those people residing in Regional Victoria, as you will see by the message below. 11.01.2022 MEET DYLAN! WHY DO YOU LOVE SQUASH? I started playing squash at the age of 10 with my brother as Dad would play. At first it was social and fun playing with th...e other kids. I have met some incredible and supportive people and made great friendships. I have always enjoyed playing racquet sports and squash was unique and that’s what I like about it. It’s a game where you have to think and be strategic and it keeps both the mind and body active. Squash has given me the opportunity to travel nationally and internationally and represent Australia which has been a great honour. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A MEMBER OF GPJSC? Being part of GPJSC is fantastic. Everyone in the club is dedicated and committed to promoting and supporting Junior Squash. WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY SQUASH BUT HAS NEVER TRIED IT BEFORE? I would say just get a tubby ball, a racquetball racquet and hit the ball around the walls. Get some friends and mates involved. It really is about starting and having a go and some fun. If you have fun, you will love to play it. As you get better and gain more confidence change balls and racquet. Take it at your own pace. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST UPON OUR RETURN TO SQUASH AFTER LOCK-DOWN? I am looking forward to a competition. It would be fantastic to be able to go to Brisbane for the AJC in December for the last time as a Junior. TELL US ABOUT A SQUASH HIGHLIGHT/MEMORY. There have been so many highlights during my years as a Junior Squash player. Being selected as the Captain for the Junior Trans-Tasman Team was an honour in 2019. Winning the Australian Junior Championships under 17 Boys in 2018 is a fabulous memory and being recognised by my peers are high points of my squash career. WHO IS YOUR SQUASH HERO/FAVOURITE? Like many squash players I admire players like Ramy Ashour for his unique skill. Our Australian players such as Cameron Pilley, Ryan Cuskelly who I have seen playing at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast also have a special mention. Gladstone Park Junior Squash Club (Inc.) 05.01.2022 MEET AMELIE! WHY DO YOU LOVE SQUASH? Squash gives me something to look forward to. It motivates me and makes me happy, it’s my happy place. It picks me up ...when I have had a bad day. I love squash so much it’s hard to put into words. WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A MEMBER OF GPJSC? I love the intense fitness training with David and I have a good time just playing for fun with friends. I really enjoy learning the technical side of squash with Terry. Court 3 is the best! WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO PLAY SQUASH BUT HAS NEVER TRIED IT BEFORE? It’s so much fun and you don’t have to compete, you can just muck about with friends. You don’t have to be highly skilled to enjoy the sport. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST UPON OUR RETURN TO SQUASH AFTER LOCK-DOWN? I can’t wait to see my squash friends again. I look forward to tournaments, training and doing a perfect lob . I can’t wait to play rallies again and really embrace every shot I do. TELL US ABOUT A SQUASH HIGHLIGHT/MEMORY. My favourite memory is from the AJC a couple of years ago in Darwin. It was my first interstate tournament, one of the most amazing experiences, of my life! I LOVED every part of that trip! I loved playing squash then swimming in the pool. I went to Kakadu and hiked to Gunlom Falls, swam in the Barramundi Gorge, went on a Yellow Water cruise and watched crocodiles, I can’t wait to go back there! Because of squash I have seen parts of Australia I wouldn’t have seen otherwise! WHO IS YOUR SQUASH HERO/FAVOURITE? Sarah Fitz-Gerald. She is one of the greatest players and she is Australian! She inspires me and motivates me to excel. P.S. I couldn’t choose which photo, so I gave both . Gladstone Park Junior Squash Club (Inc.) 02.01.2022 The JETSS Junior Series Tournament #4, was held on Sunday at Willoughby squash club. This event initially had 68 entries, which reduced to 46 due to COVID conce...rns. Despite the reduced numbers, we had 12 new players to the tournament scene of which 6 were new beginner-novice players. Many thanks go to those parents and players who chose to play and from the overall feel of the event it was a great success. At this event for the first time, we ran a few new activities. A SKINS event, a best of 3 points format, saw some upset results and the top seeded players not winning. The format allows opportunities for players of slightly lower standards to win against the better players as it is not reliant on fitness and strength, rather skill and sometimes luck. The other new activity was a skills challenge for all levels, with the open section required to keep 2 balls simultaneously in play whilst still landing the balls into a target area; a difficult and challenging skill. The other divisions were set slightly easier tasks like cross courting and driving to designated target areas. These activities added variation to the event and also gave the players a rest in between their matches. We had a number of major sponsors for most of the JETSS Junior Series, including Squash NSW and Pete Sinodinos. Many thanks goes to them for their generous support as well as to the court owners of Willoughby and MAASH, who allowed us to use their centres at discounted court hire costs. Hopefully the sponsors and centres will continue their support next year as well. For this event we also were supported by Jason McLauchlan from Stellar and Steve Pilley from Karakal with many giveaways and prizes which the kids loved. Rebel Sports also came to the party with some generous sponsorship, organised by parents Cindy and Paul. Damien Collins from Cheeky Monkey Squash and now the NSW representative for i-Mask also came to the party with 2 sets of i-Mask for some of our novice players as encouragement awards. Parents also chipped in with some donations of food and cake. They also generously assisted Yan to sort, cook, organise and serve the food. Special thanks to a few of our parents, Elki and Jameel for the way they helped run the Novice sections, keeping the kids on track and assisting them to learn how to score and referee. A big thanks to Yan for her hard work getting many of the new novice players into the events and helping the parents learn about this great game. Your help and support has been invaluable. Over the last 4 months, the JETSS Junior Series has provided the kids with an opportunity to get back into the competitive environment and the growth in numbers has been fantastic. Across the 4 JETSS tournament series, we have introduced over 40 new players to the world of tournaments and the response has been fantastic by both players and parents. The plan is to expand this series next year and run monthly events. I know we already have some interested sponsors who want to back this series in 2021 and provide the kids with a fun environment. If you would like to get involved either as a sponsor or as a parent of a player please let me know. Finally, I hope everyone has a great Xmas and new year; and that 2021 can be a much better year than 2020 and that Squash in NSW continues to move forward and the squash family continues to grow.
