25.01.2022 I heard a really good suggestion recently for adding value to our Squash Players app. It's one we'd not thought of before. The idea came thanks to Phillip Marlow of Better Squash. Phillip is a "Remote Squash Coash", based in the UK, who I've been chatting with recently. Thanks Phillip! The idea is that we help users of the app to identify when and where clubs/venues have their open club nights, obviously so as to help facilitate players to pop by and have a hit.... Here's the challenge/catch as we see it: it's largely dependent on squash venues/clubs to: 1. Claim their own listing in our global database 2. Actively manage their listing to identify when they have open club nights. That said, it is already possible for anyone on the planet to recommend changes to an existing listing. But we haven't yet added "open club night" as information that can be added or managed yet - but we will! And it's definitely on our roadmap to have club/venue owners to claim their own listing, hopefully in the next few months. Comments anyone?

23.01.2022 Fair to say I have had a lot of phone calls and messages since the Squash Australia CEO announced his resignation yesterday. Most calls have been positive with ...people looking to the future. I have been meeting with Squash Australia CEO’s for the past 26 years and I think it’s ok to say we have never had a CEO with a focus on the growth of our sport in Australia. For all sorts of reasons decisions have been made that have caused issues between Squash Australia and ; The States/Territories, high performance athletes, centre operators, coaches, referees, brands and many others. Of course I realize you cannot please everyone all the time, but you can be respectful and honest at all times. It’s time to be inclusive, to have the Board set a plan/direction and to employ someone to achieve this. No more empire builders, no wantrepreneurs just a good person delivering on a good plan. So how do we get a good plan? Well this is where the Australian Squash Community needs to send in ideas. Polite, sensible, achievable, measurable ideas. There are a lot of very clever, highly skilled, well resourced people in our community and now is the moment you could make a difference to our game. So if you have an idea send it to a Board member, I’m sure their details are on the Squash Oz website. But remember, be positive, no need to talk about any negative experiences from the past!

22.01.2022 We woke up this morning to see that a clearly lovely German bloke kindly added 12 new squash venues to our database, raising our count of German venues up to 50. We manually review every single venue suggestion, to check for quality/correctness, and they were all good, of course. Vielen Dank Andre!... https://squash.courts.live/

22.01.2022 Seriously, why didn't I think of this before?! Thanks to Phillip of Better Squash, I've just created a Facebook GROUP to accompany this Facebook PAGE https://www.facebook.com/groups/squashplayersapp "Squash Players App - Discussion Group"... I think the title is sufficiently self-explanatory! Anyone in the group can start a new discussion, unlike this page, where only page administrators or editors can. So if you have an idea for making the Squash Players App better, or perhaps you've found a bug, the group is the place to be. As a person who likes/follows this page, I warmly encourage you to join our new group. We'd *love* to hear from you. No idea too crazy! THANK YOU!

21.01.2022 We've earlier posted a "Did you know?" fact about an old squash court in Chicago, USA, being used as the site for the world's first nuclear reactor. Yes, you read that right! An obvious choice, perhaps because it had a viewing gallery!? Several references were made to that squash court, and that nuclear experiment, in episode 4 of the BBC's excellent "The Bomb" podcast series.... Here's the direct link to episode 4... but you really should start at episode 1, of course. Enjoy! :-) https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p08ny993

21.01.2022 Avid readers will notice that we're preparing to release a very simple leaderboard/ladder competition, that will automatically attach to all squash venues in our database. It's going to have *super simple* rules for promotion/demotion up and down the ladder, depending on (obviously) what the result was (win, loss, or draw), and the relative positions of the players at the time. But the question is... what is the time?... Is it: a) The date/time when the match was actually played (assuming the players have manually supplied that information), OR b) The date/time when the result of the match was FIRST entered into the database, OR c) The date/time when the result was APPROVED by the other player (which could be mins, hours, or days after the result was first entered) (IMPORTANT: we will always insist that results are ifrst approved by BOTH players before any ladder processing is performed. If we didn't stick to this, then it increases the chances that some, er, idiots, will deliberately abuse the system by entering results that never happened, or plain wrong results which their opponent has no opportunity to challenge). At time of typing, we're leaning towards performing the promotion/demotion calculations at the moment that a match result is approved, i.e. (c) above. If we DON'T go with (c), then it them becomes necessary to perform an historical adjustment to the ladder for the two players, and then re-process all ladder position for dates after the one that just got entered. In leaning towards (c), we would of course always encourage all players to enter and approve match results as soon as possible after the match is actually played. Thoughts?

20.01.2022 Just had a most excellent Zoom chat with Brisbane-based Hassaan of Sportageous. Sportageous is own/managed by 3 friends, all with a passion for sport, and a strong interest in promoting it. Indeed you can tell from their home page which sports they (currently) enjoy the most! (climbing, cricket, soccer, SQUASH, tennis). Hopefully the Squash Players app will be a featured article on their site in the not too distant future.... Our Squash Players app represents a collision of sport, technology, and innovation, which they have a specific category for: https://www.sportageous.co/ca/sports-tech-entrepreneurship/ Scroll to the bottom of any page on their site, and you'll see the opportunity to subscribe to their newsletter. Go for it! We just did. We look forward to seeing Sportageous evolve and grow in the future! https://www.sportageous.co/

20.01.2022 Hi Everyone, We've got a racketball/racquetball question, which might seem out of place on a Fb page for Squash Players. We're wanting to experiment with how easy it is to clone our Squash Players app for Racketball Players.... So naturally we need to understand the differences... including the differences between Racketball and Racquetball. We're getting mixed messages when searching online. For example, this page suggests that Racketball is largely played in the UK, and (always?) on a squash court https://www.uk-racketball.com/how-to-play.html Whereas this page seems to use the Raquetball and Racketball completely interchangeably https://www.theukrules.co.uk/r/sport/racquetball/index.html Any insights - especially from people who've actually experienced racketball/racquetball in both the UK and the USA - would be most appreciated!

17.01.2022 If you're interestde in Squash 57 (formerly Racketball), please do consider liking/following and contributing to this new Fb group I recently setup: https://www.facebook.com/groups/squash57 I've called the page "Squash 57 (because Racketball isn't Racquetball)

11.01.2022 It was a pleasure chatting yesterday with UK-based Barry Green of https://www.squashleagues.org/ fame. As some of you will know, I (Ross Gerring) was the developer of the very similar http://squashleagues.com/ website, which is (incredibly!) still running - just! - despite almost no active development work for the last 15 years When I first became aware of https://www.squashleagues.org/ it very quickly became obvious to me that Barry and I are both lovers of squash and tech...nology, and are passionate about bringing the two together for the benefit of all. And our conversation yesterday confirmed this. So a massive congratulations to you, Barry, for what you've achieved with https://www.squashleagues.org/. You've done it bigger and better than http://squashleagues.com, that's for sure. I look forward to comparing notes with Barry in the coming weeks/years to see how best we can help each other to help squash.

10.01.2022 Beautiful squash courts. Only one word.... beautiful! https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/beautifulsquashcourts #beautifulsquashcourts

09.01.2022 And now comparing worldwide Google search popularity of Squash v Racquetball over the last 5 years, and it's clear that Squash still dominates over Racquetball. And most of the searches for Squash are coming from... Lithuania?! https://trends.google.com/trends/explore

04.01.2022 And clearly, in the UK, people use the words Racquetball and Racketball completely interchangably. This is despite that the fact that, technically, the ONLY version of it (that is played on squash courts) is Racketball, NOT Racquetball. Oh, and the marketing people want it (Racketball) to be called Squash 57, in order to more clearly distinguish it from the USA version, NOT played on a squash court, called Racquetball.... I actually much better understand now why calling Racketball "Squash 57" makes more sense. But I still don't think "Squash 57" will ever catch on. Let confusion rein! https://trends.google.com/trends/explore

04.01.2022 Talking of Racketball, this Google Trends data (tracking the popularity of search words and terms over time) will interest some. It shows that searches for "Racquetball" are way more popular than searches for "Racketball". Clearly "Squash 57" hasn't caught on at all!... And the country where these terms are searched for the most is... Colombia?! Here's the direct link to this report, if you want to play with variables yourself: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore
