15.01.2022 #therocksrecognition Paul Grainger, Success Coach - Business Campus: The Rocks Studied: Diploma of Marketing & Bachelor of Business Was a Domestic Student... Achievement: Completed university qualifications, despite not finishing high school. What were your thoughts about university before discovering Torrens? I didn't finish high school and I never though I would entertain the prospect of pursuing university studies. Though even when I did come around to begin my Diploma of Marketing seven years later, I convinced myself that I wasn't cut out for study and dropped my first four subjects. It took me six months to try again, but then not only would I then go on to complete my Diploma, but just two years later, also my full degree, whilst continuing to work full-time. What did you feel while studying at university? There were times when I wanted to throw in the towel - and I certainly had a few mental breakdowns! - but by continuing to be proactive in connecting with my Success Coach, my counsellor and finding new ways to connecting with my peers in real life, I was able to persevere. Is there anything you can offer to people who are in the same situation as you were back then? I know how difficult it can be to bounce back and to sustain that motivation over the course of the degree, but I've also learned some really practical steps for how we can all succeed in doing this. I'm so excited to be a Success Coach; to have the opportunity to share some of these tips with our current and future students! We're very lucky to have such an inspirational person available for support! 09.01.2022 #therocksrecogniton Riyan Suwitera, 2nd year, Domestic & International Student Studying: Associate Degree of Culinary Management Achievement: Saving for an overly expensive PC during COVID... Why are you building a new PC? Because I’ve had this old PC for SEVEN years. What are you excited about with this new PC? It has an RTX 3080 which is a new GPU (graphics processing unit) and has an Intel i7 10th Gen, which isn’t a bad CPU (central processing unit). Also, the PC will have 6TB worth of space. What are some saving tips in how to save money during COVID? Eat rice; it’s dirt cheap. Also get eggs, bokchoy, tomatoes, carrots, and of course, onion and garlic. This way, you’ll save more money than always buying red meat or eating out. Don’t spend more than $300 per week. #therocksrecogntion #youguysrock #therockssrc #torrensuniversity #torrensuni

05.01.2022 #therocksrecognition Dr. Alasdair A. MacDonald, Senior Learning Facilitator and Subject Coordinator Campus: Online & Brisbane Achievement: Gave up a job in the U.S. to become an international student in Australia... What was your job in the U.S.? Senior Director Global Marketing, Strategy and Licensing. I worked in the Biotechnology industry and loved the innovation in that space. I had a great global team and customers; our company was always working on innovative products. What prompted you to study in Australia suddenly? Love and a break from work... I wanted some time-out so I did my Masters in International Business Administration. How did this become your biggest achievement, rather than the biggest risk for you? After years of working in a high-powered role, I was able to apply my work experience in the classroom and my studies; was really excellent versus doing an MBA without any prior experience. I also became a student mentor, graduated top of my year which included getting the university prize for academic excellence and outstanding leadership (based on grades, lecturer and student feedback). Very humbling. One of the good things that came out of COVID is that our community has expanded, not only including Sydneysiders but also other states! We are very lucky to have the option of accessing great lecturers from across the country. #youguysrock #therocksrecognition #therockssrc #torrensuniversity #torrensuni
