24.01.2022 Bookweek may have looked a little different this year, but this didn’t curb the students enthusiasm to dress up and celebrate! The theme for 2020 was Curious Creatures, Wild Minds. In the 3/4 classroom, we explored this year's theme by focusing on the book We’re Stuck by Sue DeGennaro. The story takes you to building 24 where a turtle, crocodile and giraffe are together in the lift when it stops moving! Luckily, they are able to work through their tricky situation with ...a bit of teamwork, resilience and patience. The same could be said of our recent lockdown experience! Working together in small groups, we were able to come together and create these fabulous Curious Creatures. #StRichardsKilsyth #PrimarySchool #Teamwork #Bookweek2020 #CuriousCreaturesWildMinds

24.01.2022 Understanding the difference between odd and even numbers was a focus for our Preps during term three. Being able to identify odd and even numbers helps children to understand our number system while preparing them for future mathematical learnings such as division, prime numbers and square roots. #StRichardsKilsyth #PrimarySchool #Mathematics #OddAndEven #MathEd

20.01.2022 Students in Grades Five and Six were recently asked to draw their interpretation of ‘a perfect number.’ Inspired by Stephen Michael Kings’s book, Three, the children learnt about the links between the book and the author’s own family, courage and determination. #StRichardsKilsyth #PrimarySchool #StephenMichaelKing #Courage #Determination

14.01.2022 During term three, the grade three and four students listened to the story, ‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’. Using the text, the children learnt how to skim and scan sentences to find factual information about the true story of William Kamkwamba. The children were then tasked with submitting three key facts that they learned from the Information Text, such as: William Kamkwamba grew up in the village of Wimbe, in the country of Malawi in East Africa. Billy... A dynamo is a machine that turns mechanical energy into electricity (direct current). Sam A windmill meant more than making power it meant freedom. 08.01.2022 In Year 5/6 we are furthering our literacy learning by comparing and contrasting two picture books written by the same author, Margaret Wild. Using ‘signal words’ we were able to decipher key differences and similarities between the two titles. #StRichardsKilsyth #PrimarySchool #Literacy #TextStructure #CompareAndContrast

08.01.2022 Did you know that Mary MacKillop was Australia’s first saint? This term, the children from Grades Three and Four have spent time learning about Saint Mary MacKillop, here are some of their insights: She was born on 15th January 1842 in Brunswick street, Fitzroy, Melbourne. Ramy... Mary Mackillop was the eldest of eight children. She was well educated by her father who spent years studying for the priesthood in Rome. However, due to ill health he returned to his homeland, Scotland, until 1835 when he migrated to Australia. Lucas Mary MacKillop opened orphanages and homes to care for the homeless, both young and old. She also spent most of her life caring and hoping to give people a fresh start in life. Throughout her life, Mary suffered ill health. She suffered a stroke in 1902. Over the next few years her health deteriorated. She died on 8th August 1909 in Alma Cottage, North Sydney. 05.01.2022 Wednesday’s are the day for science experiments at St Richard’s! Last month we combined the festivities of Halloween and our love of Science to create some very spooky alien eyes. We drew on our egg shells with texta before placing them in a jar of white vinegar. Then we left them to see what would happen... We hypothesised and posed questions.... We observed bubbles forming on the eggshells straight away and the texta marks began to peel away from the shell. The vinegar also began foaming and a layer of ‘slimy stuff’ began to form. To further the experiment, we decided to remove a third of the eggs and place them in a jar of water. Another third were taken out of the jar to see what would happen if they were surrounded only by air, and not liquid. Stay tuned for the final result of this experiment #StRichardsKilsyth #PrimarySchool #STEM #Experiment
