23.01.2022 Demonstration Firearms for Training Members who have unused or unwanted firearms are encouraged to consider donating them for use in the Association’s Practical Firearms Training Program. We are particularly looking for Category A and B lever, pump and break open action types. Suitable rifles or shotguns that fit into those categories would be gratefully accepted, however, any category or type of firearm can be surrendered. It is important for participants undergoing traini...ng to be able to physically handle the different action types so that they become familiar with their operation and can handle them safely. With the planned expansion of the delivery of the course into regional areas more demonstration firearms are needed. Calibre and barrel condition are unimportant. The actions need to be operable for demonstration and handling purposes, but the firearms will not be discharged. The Association will cover all administrative arrangements for the transfer as well as costs. If you would like to see your firearms used to help train new shooters in the safe, competent, ethical and lawful use of firearms, please contact State Office. See more

18.01.2022 Training Courses SSAA Victoria is pleased to advise that with the relaxation of some Covid-19 restrictions it is now possible for the PFTP courses to recommence. However, there are still significant restrictions in place that will affect how the courses can be run. The Association understands that there is enormous demand for the training and will deliver as many courses as it can. The number of courses that can be offered is limited by trainer and range availability. Capacit...y is being increased, but it will take time for new trainers to be fully accredited. The quality of the training will not be compromised for the sake of dealing with the backlog caused by Covid-19 restrictions. Those people who had booked into courses that were cancelled will be given the first opportunity to book new courses. They will be sent an email within the next few days advising them of details. All information about the available courses will be put on the SSAA Victoria website on Friday. Please read the announcement carefully and in full. Under the current restrictions the theory component will be done via Zoom, with the practical component then done at the range. When booking a course, you must ensure that you can attend both the theory and practical sessions for that course. Please note, bookings can only be made through the website. State Office staff will not be able to answer questions regarding course dates or details via phone, email or Facebook. Please do not contact State Office, as this will only delay courses being delivered. There are no waiting lists and you will not receive special treatment. The information on the webpage and conveyed via Facebook is accurate and will be kept up to date. State Office is busy organising new trainers and needs to confirm range availability before announcing course dates for next year. New courses will be posted on the webpage when dates can be confirmed. Courses will only be run at Eagle Park and Springvale for the time being. There are plans for courses to be rolled out to regional areas next year. Details will be advised when they are known. Your patience and understanding are appreciated. For information about Victoria Police run firearms safety courses please contact LRD or your local DFO. See more

16.01.2022 Victorian Government Announces Deer Control Strategy Victoria’s long-awaited deer management strategy, promised under the Sustainable Hunting Action Plan 2016-2020 (SHAP), has finally emerged. Unfortunately, it has not come out as a management strategy but rather as a narrowly focused deer control edict that will leave Victoria’s 40,000 licensed deer hunters disappointed. The Association has worked cooperatively with government and other stakeholders in providing advice and f...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Public Land Access Update The Bill to remove the prohibition on camping on Crown Land River Frontage has passed the Upper House of Parliament, after passing the Lower House in November 2019. The Parks and Crown Land Legislation Amendment Bill 2019 makes it legal for all members of the public to camp on Crown Land River Frontage and enjoy camping, fishing and other recreational activities for free. These activities will still be appropriately regulated. SSAA Victoria conside...rs that public land should be available for the public to use and supported the Bill. The Association also expressed the view that with that right of access comes a corresponding responsibility to treat the areas in question, other users and adjacent landowners with respect. Mr Jeff Bourman, SFFP, worked diligently to overcome a significant misinformation campaign aimed at derailing the legislation and spoke in favour of the Bill. He said, To help allay the fears of the farmers I worked with the government to get amendments to specify exactly what types of land the changes would affect, and the government actually delivered. In fact, they even added a new type of land that could be camped on, being Crown Land that wasn’t licensed (or leased of course) but only in the hands of the Crown (subject to other restrictions, such as being National Parks etc). This bill was only positive for anyone interested in outdoor recreational pursuits on public land, particularly licensed public land with no effect on most farmers and a negligible effect on those that license Crown land. The Association congratulates Mr Bourman and the Legislative Council members who supported the Bill.

06.01.2022 The Victorian Government has released the updated restrictions for both Melbourne and regional Victoria. It is pleasing to see that the border between the two regions has been removed and members can now freely move around the state without limitation. As such, both metro and regional range will now be operating under the same COVID-19 restrictions. Eagle Park will return to normal opening hours which includes Mondays and Fridays as of 13 November following the government res...trictions. There will be no change to the operations of Springvale. It will continue to be open to members only due to the limited numbers that the range can host. Main range bookings are essential. Please go to our website for more information on all our ranges, opening time and booking requirements.

06.01.2022 SSAA VICTORIA REACTS TO 2021 DUCK SEASON ANNOUNCEMENT SSAA Victoria is extremely disappointed with the 2021 duck season arrangements that were announced on Saturday and cannot understand how such a decision has been made, given the season conditions and outlook. The Association has sought a detailed explanation from the GMA so that it might understand on what basis the arrangements were decided. 04.01.2022 Matt Merrick, a long-time SSAA Deerstalkers Club member and vocal advocate for ethical hunting, has released a sambar hunting video on YouTube. Matt has a personal viewpoint and uses the video to highlight some of the current issues around technology, deer control and the implications for hunters and hunting, as he sees it. He raises some interesting points. The Association encourages members to watch the video and consider what their own views are on the matter. Deer managem...ent in Victoria is complicated and likely to become even more-so over coming years. With the significant rise in numbers of both deer and licenced hunters there has been an increased blurring of the lines between control activities and recreational hunting. The traditionally accepted concepts of ethical hunting and fair chase are being challenged in the current Victorian environment, where many hunters are coming to see their role as being to simply kill as many deer as possible. When numbers become the main motivating factor for hunters, we are entering potentially dangerous territory as far as ethics and respect for the animal are concerned. The Association recognises that deer do need to be managed in certain circumstances, but also recognises that there are fundamental differences between control operations and genuine hunting activities. The use of technology and techniques that are acceptable, and even desirable, in a control exercise will not necessarily be appropriate or acceptable in a true hunting activity. However, both have a place. Ethics are not static. They have evolved over time as technology and attitudes have changed and they will continue to do so. There are a lot of deer management issues that hunters are going to have to come to terms with and try to reconcile from an ethical perspective. There will be as many views as there are hunters, so it won’t be easy. However, let’s start having the conversation. The video can be accessed via the link below. https://youtu.be/qDHNkkFxQbI See more

01.01.2022 Hunters harvest higher number of deer in Victoria Research into deer hunting, released by the Game Management Authority (GMA), shows an increase in the number of licensed recreational deer hunters and an increase in the number of deer harvested in 2019. The Estimates of the 2019 deer harvest in Victoria has found that 173,800 deer were harvested in 2019 a 43 per cent increase on the estimated 121,600 deer harvested in 2018.... Sambar Deer was the most harvested species with an estimated total harvest of 131,258, of which 60 per cent were female. Fallow Deer was the second most harvested species, with an estimated harvest of 30,307 deer, of which 62 per cent were female. The number of recreational deer hunters licensed to hunt deer in Victoria peaked at 41,985 by the end of the year. The research also shows that each active licensed deer hunter harvested an average of 6.8 deer and was active for an average of 13.6 days in 2019. Licensed deer hunters spent a combined total of 344,604 days hunting a 45 per cent increase from 2018. The most popular hunting areas were around the towns of Mansfield, Dargo, Licola, Wodonga and Myrtleford. The highest number of deer harvested were around the towns of Myrtleford, Mansfield, Bairnsdale, Dargo and Whittlesea. Most of the deer were taken from public land. The GMA Chief Executive Officer Graeme Ford said the 2019 deer hunting season continued the trend of an increasing annual harvest. The findings in the report show recreational deer hunting has grown in popularity with more hunters successfully harvesting more deer, Mr Ford said. It is important to collect information about the number of deer harvested by recreational hunters each year. This information is used to help inform decisions about deer management and the management of hunting on public and private land in Victoria. Thank you to all the hunters who participated in the research. Throughout 2019, 2,600 licensed deer hunters were surveyed to gather information about their hunting activity, including how many deer they harvested, where they hunted, what hunting methods were used and the species of deer they harvested. The report is produced by the GMA in collaboration with the Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research.
