23.01.2022 Just because you can’t see the water doesn’t mean it’s not there! Before the rain sets in and creek channels fill with water we use bores to sample groundwater and find stygofauna fauna that live in groundwater systems. This critter is a specialist groundwater crustacean from the family Bathynellidae.... #stygofauna #groundwater #bores #supervisingscientist #buildup #drycreek #tropics #seasonalstreams

18.01.2022 We're Flying High! Check out the Supervising Scientist’s new Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) drone that is changing the way we collect data to measure ecosystem restoration. This drone was custom built in Australia to meet our mission requirements and tough environmental conditions in the Top End. 16.01.2022 Freshwater mussels play a vital role in the ecosystem and are an important food source for the traditional owners of Kakadu National Park. Mussels are good indicators of environmental contamination which make them very useful for monitoring the nearby Ranger uranium mine. Do you know that one of the Supervising Scientist’s key roles is protecting people from the potential effects of uranium mining in the region? When Traditional Owners were wanting to know about the health of... a billabong, we sent out our mussel monitoring team! 12.01.2022 DO go chasing waterfalls! Building a comprehensive DNA database of freshwater macroinvertebrate species in the Alligators Rivers Region is no easy challenge! Some species live in the splash zone of waterfalls, requiring extra effort to find the cryptic ones! 09.01.2022 Brooke Batham, pictured here with her prize pack, is the winner of the Supervising Scientist’s BRUVNet fish labelling challenge having labelled a titanic 942 fish images. Brooke’s fantastic effort will assist SSB, and fisheries scientist’s across Australia, to train artificial intelligence programs to identify fish from video imagery. If you would also like to contribute to this great initiative go to www.bruvnet.org and get labelling!... 09.01.2022 For more than 40 years, the Supervising Scientist Branch has been protecting the dual World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park and the surrounding Alligator Rivers Region from the effects of uranium mining. Equipped with world-class scientific expertise, we conduct environmental research and monitoring, and apply their outcomes to inform environmental regulation, management and restoration. We work closely with the local and wider community, including Gundjeihmi Aboriginal... Corporation and Northern Land Council to provide them with ongoing assurance that Kakadu National Park remains safe from the effects of uranium mining. 08.01.2022 Throwback Thursday This is one of the first images we took from our drones in 2014. It shows part of the Magela Floodplain in Kakadu National Park and if you look closely you can see waterbirds in flight. 04.01.2022 Meet our favourite gudgeon! Mogurnda mogurnda, commonly known as the northern purple-spotted gudgeon, can be found lurking throughout freshwater billabongs and streams in Kakadu National Park. 03.01.2022 Local Knowledge Trains AI to Monitor Fish Our scientists recently took a trip to Jabiru Area School to chat all things fish and Artificial Intelligence (AI)! We are building a platform to automate identification of fish species from video taken in Kakadu billabongs, however, we need help labelling images of fish to train the AI. Who better to ask than those with local knowledge of the fish species? For more information go to www.bruvnet.org ...
