01.01.2022 Message to the Equatorian communities in South Australia: As most of you might already know, there has been much media attention on "African youth gangs" in Victoria. African communities in Australia is going through tough time at the moment as a result of the media attention. Obviously, when a community is described in a racial term, we all get affected in one way or another. It is such a collective description used by the media that makes us worry. We worry because it may ...influence negative perceptions of our community and we become targetted by people trying to take advantage of the situation. Such media attention may also paint a bad picture of our youths yet so many of our youths are working day and night to better themselves in Australia. As a result of the much media attention, SSECASA urges all of you to take care of yourself. Look out for each other and avoid any altercation by all means. If you are in great danger, call police immediately instead of taking the law into your hands. If you are a youth, stay away from anti-social behaviour. You can do better than being involved in anti-social behaviour. It will not take you anywhere. As a youth, whatever you do should be something that will prepare you for a better tomorrow. None of the anti-social behaviours will help you in the future when you become a matured adult. Sow a good seed today to harvest a good crop tomorrow. Remember, even a blind squirrel finds a nut if it works hard for it. You are the hope of this community. If things get tough and you require support, speak to our elders and community leaders as traditionally practised by our forefathers. Our elders and community leaders will support you without hesitation. They will guide you with great humility and wisdom. Stay Safe! SSECASA Team
