25.01.2022 Well, last weekend’s Crazy Poles did not disappoint. It was a real mixed bag! We were extremely lucky with the weather after a not so pleasant forecast We welcomed a couple of new combinations and missed some of our regulars. However, everyone did a fantastic job and I’d like to give a shout out to the kids group who were on their A game showing great ability to visualise, use their spatial awareness and a high level of accuracy Also, a special mention to Jo and Wo...ody who haven’t missed a class and have made the hugest improvement in a very short time! Keep up the good work NEXT DATE will be Saturday 25th July- will advertise closer to date but early bookings will be taken.

23.01.2022 We are watching a riding lesson---The instructor says "Use more leg." What does that mean? Well, a rider's leg starts at the hip and goes all the way down to th...e foot, so "leg" is a pretty vague term. Does the instructor want the long, soft, almost Saran-Wrap leg of the upper level dressage rider, or the shorter, strong, driving leg of the upper level cross country rider? A demanding "you WILL GO" leg, or a suggesting pressure that is released almost at the instant it is applied? Or something in between? Try this----Sit on your horse and grip with your knees as hard as you can---Your horse will stand there like a rock. Now squeeze from, say, about mid-calf up. He may move a step, but more likely he still won't move. Now, soften your knee, and close that part of your lower leg that is down by your Achilles tendon and that knobby ankle bone, and the spur mount on your boot---Off he will go, because THAT is the part of the leg that he can most specifically feel. THIS is your cross country leg. That says "GO!" But you will notice that when your knee is ON, that lowest part of your leg will be OFF, and vice versa. If you use a cross country leg for dressage, you are way overdoing it, bur if you use a dressage leg for cross country, you might as well just scream "JUMP" for all the actual effect it will have. All leg is not created equal. Learn the various legs for the accomplishments of various tasks---

23.01.2022 Ok guys, time for some progress photos!! This lot are some of my jumping riders doing their thing. A couple of shout outs this time go to: Spike and Belle who have been working hard on improving their canter, position(Spike loves no stirrup work) and balance both on the flat and over fences. This is also improving Belle’s technique as she is getting stronger and better balanced all round.... Georgie and Penny have also been busy working on rhythm, some tough lines, no stirrups (or hands!) and a better position with quiet hands. Such a difference! Keep up the good work everyone and Happy Riding!

08.01.2022 Carl Hester tells us: We want the horse in self carriage, and that means the rider has to be in self carriage and without a strong core, that is very difficult... to do. It is worth riders spending the time getting the core strong, then you won’t need your arms or legs to hold you in the saddle they must be soft and independent of your body. 08.01.2022 A quiet session for Odie today. We haven’t done any groundwork for a while. You can see that although he’s very, very good (responsive, willing, somewhat relaxed), he is fairly distracted and finding it hard to give me his full concentration. He is a horse who has extremely sharp senses and can get worried by people he doesn’t know or high energy levels around him. This results in tension and over thinking and reacting. Because of this, my goal with him is always relaxatio...n. The trust is there but the relaxation comes and goes. (And apparently it’s spring time according to all the animals so that doesn’t help!!) However, despite a few breaks in concentration and our connection, I’m pleased with the way he worked today. All my horses do groundwork early on and I think it is a very important part of the relationship. A horse needs leadership and respect and to learn how to make the right choices so that he is content and confident within himself both as a horse and a willing partner. Excuse the poor videoing as I enrolled the help of the old fence post and he’s not quite on his A game at the moment

08.01.2022 Hmmm, anymore to add?

06.01.2022 To prevent your upper body from collapsing... Imagine your torso as the letter ‘T.’ Maintaining your upper body in the shape of a ‘T’ will keep your shoulders level and prevent you from collapsing in your rib cage. Maureen Mestas Illustration by Sandy Rabinowitz

05.01.2022 "Straightness begins with riding correct arena patterns right from the very beginning, and together with the steady rhythm and tempo it forms the foundation of ...the entire training. Straightness is then perfected through bending work, i.e. curved lines and lateral movements. When the horse can bend equally well in both directions through his entire body, and the rider can control precisely the placement of the horse’s front legs and hind legs, the horse is straight. In other words, bending and suppling work straightens the horse, and vice versa, straightening work improves the horse’s bend and suppleness." Thomas Ritter Painting: Eve Werner, www.evewerner.com

04.01.2022 EDITED WITH AN ADDITION: We are still awaiting formal advice from the Government, in particular around Stage 4 restrictions, but in the meantime, rest assur...ed that you can continue to care and exercise your horse - including travelling to where your horse is kept, if that is outside a 5km radius. Equestrian Victoria will provide a downloadable document in the event you may be stopped when travelling to care or exercise your horse. Vets, farriers and other equine professionals involved in the care and welfare of your horse will also still be allowed. Stage 3 Restrictions for regional Victoria come into effect at 11:59pm on Wednesday evening also, and will largely mirror the Stage 3 Restrictions put in place recently for Melbourne and Mitchell Shire posted on 9 July. You can view those here. https://www.vic.equestrian.org.au//important-update-regard We will continue to represent the membership and request any exemptions to the current Covid-19 restrictions, to ensure our membership is able to provide appropriate care to their equine friends. As you can probably understand, this is a very busy time for the Government, and there are a lot of competing priorities. Be patient, but know that you can continue to care for your horse. #staysafe #equestrianvictoria #lovethehorse
