14.01.2022 At St Stephen's we are very fortunate to have one of the finest pipe organs in Sydney, played each week by our organists Mark Quarmby and Nico Tjoelker. But in Europe, in a little church in Germany, there is an organ where something very exciting happened a couple of days ago. The Saint Burchardi Church in the city of Halberstadt is the venue for a very special musical performance on the church's organ. It is the performance of a piece of music by avant-garde composer John Ca...ge called 'As Slow As Possible.' The performance began on the 5th September, 2001, and is is scheduled to end on September 5, 2640. That's 639 years after it started. What was the exciting thing that happened this week? There was a chord change! The notes G# and E were added to the existing chord, and will be played until 5th February 2022, when they'll stop playing the G#. The piece is eight pages long, and began with a 17-month rest. So - if you happen to find yourself in Halberstadt, Germany in the next 620 years (or so), stop in at the church and have a listen. But don't disturb the organist. It would be a shame if the organist made a mistake and had to re-start the piece from the beginning. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-54041568
