23.01.2022 Today is Wednesday of the Fourth Week of Ordinary Time; Ordinary Time, meaning ordered or numbered time, is celebrated in two segments: from the Monday followin...g the Baptism of Our Lord up to Ash Wednesday; and from Pentecost Monday to the First Sunday of Advent. This makes it the largest season of the Liturgical Year. We pray: Grant us, Lord our God, that we may honour you with all our mind, and love everyone in truth of heart. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

22.01.2022 Today we celebrate the feasts of the Archangels.
21.01.2022 I would like to share with you my homily from last Sunday’s Solemn Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral. I reflect upon the warning in the Gospel reading to be wary of f...alse prophets. Both true and false prophets can come from each of us. Indeed, the possessed man Jesus cures is no outsider, no heathen; he is inside the synagogue, one of us. Prophets though we Christians are, we too can stumble and fall. We too can be possessed or obsessed. We too need those authoritative healing words of Jesus: Shalom! Be quiet now! I cast all evil from you. Now be My prophet, a voice for Me in your world. Read my full homily here: https://bit.ly/3cyRsNw See more
21.01.2022 Today marks the feast day of one of the co-patrons of Australia, St Francis Xavier. From the Basque country of Spain, the homeland of my maternal ancestors, St ...Francis was an inspirational missionary who helped start the Jesuit Order. He evangelised in large parts of Asia, including Japan, Sri Lanka, India, parts of Indonesia and possibly the Philippines in the 16th century. In the space of ten years of missionary work, he is believed to have brought tens of thousands of people to Christ! May this remarkable missionary continue to inspire us so that our universal Church may be gladdened with new sons and daughters in the generations ahead of us. St Francis Xavier, pray for us!
20.01.2022 Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us
20.01.2022 Some very important changes we need to follow before attending Mass.
20.01.2022 Did you know? Today the Church celebrates the feast of the Presentation of the Lord which occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus and is also known as Candle...mas day since the blessing and procession of candles are included in today's liturgy! We pray: Almighty ever-living God, we humbly implore your majesty that, just as your Only Begotten Son was presented on this day in the Temple in the substance of our flesh, so, by your grace, we may be presented to you with minds made pure. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
19.01.2022 Friends, like the Magi who we remember today on the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord which Australian Catholic churches are marking today, we are all seekers,... we have our questions. But what they faintly understood was where to bring those questions: to One who knows all, as only God can, yet One who experiences all, as only a human being can. The Magi's searching and ours comes to its conclusion in Jesus, the Alpha and the Omega, the Question and the Answer to our pilgrimage and prayer. Under COVID-19 restrictions, attendance at Mass is limited to 100 people today. If you're unable to attend Mass in person, watch the 10:30am Solemn Mass from St Mary's Cathedral here: https://bit.ly/354eB5R My ongoing prayers are with you all. May our Lord pour out His blessings upon you and your loved ones in 2021, God bless.

16.01.2022 Today we remember all who have served our country at war on Remembrance Day and we especially pray for their families mourning the loss of loved ones who died s...erving Australia in war-time. Lest we forget. Today also marks the feast day of one of the most popular saints in Europe, St Martin of Tours. It is quite ironic that on this day we honour a Roman calvalry officer who was imprisoned as a conscientious objector and eventually discharged. After he was baptised, he redirected his fighting spirit into a life of pacificism, turning from physical warfare to spiritual, from a battle for wealth and power to a love of poverty and dispossession. May we all draw inspiration from St Martin of Tours, that God may direct our foibles to serve His higher purposes and gradually tame our souls to make us the saints He wants us to be. St Martin of Tours, pray for us!

13.01.2022 Today is the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time. Through today's parable, Jesus reminds us to not be so overcome by greed or judgment that we inadvertently reject Him and the blessings of the Father
12.01.2022 Before we go to sleep, we often make sure our home is secure. This is important, but we should also invite God and his heavenly hosts of angels to protect our h...ome as well, giving us added security. Here is a prayer from The Catholic Prayer Book that can be included in your nightly routine, allowing you to rest in peace, knowing that your house is protected Protect us, Lord, under the shadow of your wings. Keep us this night without sin. Visit, we ask you, O Lord, this home, and repel from it all the snares of the enemy. Let your holy angels dwell herein to preserve us in peace; and may your blessing be upon us for ever, through Christ our Lord. Amen. See more

07.01.2022 Friends this Sunday, we will celebrate the Feast of Christ the King, also called the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. The Feast was est...ablished by Pope Pius XI in 1925 with his encyclical, Quas primas, In the first, to respond to a world that was rejecting Christ amid growing secularism. In these times, when we are challenged in our faith and our ability to worship together due to COVID19, may this special feast remind us that Jesus Christ is indeed Our King who reigns forever. To ask Christ to be your King is to put your trust in His Providence, to commit to fitting your plans into His (not vice versa), so that His will will be done on earth-in-us- as it is in heaven. I encourage you to download dedicated prayer and liturgical resources for families and parishes on this special feast day on Sunday which you’ll find here on the Archdiocese of Sydney website: https://bit.ly/36OXDsn O Jesus, King truly present in the Most Blessed Sacrament, Reign in our hearts #ChristReigns
07.01.2022 Friends, since my installation as your Archbishop in 2014, I’ve witnessed first-hand the many strengths of our Church in Sydney: its scale, cultural diversity, ...piety and zeal of its pastors and people. But Our Lord is calling us to become more powerful witnesses to God’s saving love- so our outreach can continue to nurture the faith of future generations of Catholics. On 12 December, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, I will be launching a new Archdiocesan Mission Plan, Go Make Disciples, aimed at making our parishes and other Eucharistic communities true centres of the new evangelisation. To compliment that mission, we all have a responsibility to share our faith stories with others, to help bring others into a closer encounter with Christ. I encourage you to watch my personal faith story, which I have shared in a video on the Go Make Disciples website here: www.gomakedisciples.org.au I trace my own journey from altar boy at St Michael's parish, Lane Cove, a pivotal moment in the Holy Land when I knew I was called to priesthood and later my ministry as your Archbishop, sharing some of the challenges and opportunities I have faced along the way which have helped me grow and nurture my faith and share it with others. I ask for your ongoing prayers as your shepherd, that through your help we may indeed lead many more Sydneysiders to grow in their love for Christ in the years ahead. God Bless you all. #GMDSydney #GoMakeDisciples
07.01.2022 To call Mary 'Mother of God' is to insist on the Incarnation; and to believe and teach the doctrine of the Incarnation is to believe and teach that the Word ete...rnally spoken by God assumed a human voice that He might speak to us, first in cries and baby-talk and later in full human language, first in signs and wonders and finally in blood and glory. Today's Feast reminds us that this divine Child really took our flesh, our world, our life-stories upon Himself, including being loved and nurtured by a human mother. Like those early Christians, we ought to celebrate what this says about us, about human possibilities under grace. Hail to you O Mother of God, Queen of the World and our Queen too: show us how to ponder, to pray and to teach, intercede for us and for peace in our world, our homes and our hearts. Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!

06.01.2022 Friends, it is wonderful to see so many Sydneysiders visiting St Mary’s Cathedral to watch the spectacular Lights of Christmas display since it opened on Thursd...ay night. We have faced a particularly challenging year in 2020 and this free family event is really the shot in the arm we need to lift our spirits as we approach Christmas Day. May the beautiful religious art lighting up the cathedral each night until December 25 preach to us the Gospel messages of hope, peace and joy, of life after death, of love that conquers all. May it remind us that God indeed became one of us, so He could share in our fragility. You’ll find more information about Lights of Christmas here: : http://lightsofchristmas.com.au/ #loc20

04.01.2022 Today is the feast day of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux - also called the Little Flower - patron saint of missionaries. In the deeply religious atmosphere of her hom...e, her piety developed early and intensively. All four of her elder sisters became nuns, and at the age of 15 she entered the Carmelite convent at Lisieux. Her popularity is largely a result of her work, which conveys her loving pursuit of holiness in ordinary life. Growing up, Thérèse was frequently in the presence of priests, but never was she more extensively exposed to the lives of priests than when on a pilgrimage to Rome. I lived in the company of many saintly priests for a month and I learned that, though their dignity raises them above the angels, they are nevertheless weak and fragile men. Thérèse was canonised in 1925 and in 1997 she was declared a Doctor of the Church, one of only three women to be so. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, pray for us. Daily Prayer for Priests O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful and tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests; for your lonely and desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptised me; the priests who absolved me from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way. O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.
