21.01.2022 Science week 2020 - here is another experiment to try https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56diV8cdeDc&feature=youtu.be Dry Erase... Dry Erase - March 2018 Experiment of the Month at SFFE Materials: A glass plate, bowl, or picture frame Dry erase marker Water Instructions: Draw a simple picture on the glass. A stick figure is a good one to start with Pour water onto the plate or into the bowl slowly to lift up the drawing Swirl the water around to make the picture dance and move How does it work? The marker leaves behind mixture of pigments and a type of alcohol mixed together. The alcohol dissolves and the pigments are left behind as a solid. Glass is so smooth that the solid slides right off when it gets wet!

14.01.2022 Science Week - How to make a Lava Lamp Are you looking for a Science Project for Science Week. Mrs McLeod has shared this one.... Lava Lamp Materials: A clean plastic bottle, try to use one with smooth sides water Vegetable Oil (or you could use Mineral or Baby Oil instead) Fizzing tablets (such as Alka Seltzer) Food Coloring Watch Scientist Joe as he makes the Lava Lamp Experiment here! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGHTZImTvFY&t=8s Instructions: Fill the bottle up about 1/4th (1 quarter) with water. Pour the vegetable oil in the bottle until is almost full. You may want to use a measuring cup with a spout or a funnel. You may have to wait a couple of minutes for the oil and water to separate. Add a few drops of your favorite food coloring. Watch as the color sinks through the oil. Did your drops of color mix with the water immediately or float in between for a few minutes? Break your fizzy tablet in half and drop part of it into the bottle. Get ready here come the bubbly blobs! You can even get a flashlight, turn off the lights and drop in another half tablet. This time shine the flashlight through the lava lamp while the blobs are bubbling! How it Works: The oil floats on top of the water because it is less dense or lighter than water. The food colouring has the same density as the water so it sinks through the oil and mixes with the water. When you add the tablet it sinks to the bottom then starts to dissolve. As it dissolves it makes gas, carbon dioxide. Gas or air is lighter than water so it floats to the top. The air bubbles bring some coloured water with them to the top. When the air comes out of the coloured water blob, the water gets heavy again and sinks. It does this over and over again until the tablet is completely dissolved. Extra Experiments: What happens if you put the cap on after dropping the fizzy tablet in? What if you drop a whole tablet in? When it stops bubbling, try sprinkling some salt into your lava lamp. What happens?

14.01.2022 Science Week continued. Snow Fluff Materials:... 1 cup corn starch 1 cup shaving cream Food Coloring Instructions: Pour the cup of corn starch into a large bowl. Use a spoon to scoop the shaving cream on top of it. Put 5-10 drops of food coloring on top. Stir to mix. When the mixture looks like grated cheese, use your hands to squish the mixture even more. Pretty soon the shaving cream and corn starch will form a ball, about the same texture as dough. If your mixture is really wet and sticky after mixing, it needs a little more corn starch. If it wont stick together and falls into pieces, add a little more shaving cream. Thats it! Try sculpting snow angels, snowmen, or make a tiny snow fort! How does it work? The tiny pieces of corn starch get mixed into the shaving cream and suspended in the mixture. Shaving cream is mad of tiny tiny bubbles, and the surface tension on the surface of the bubbles helps float the corn starch particles when the two mix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Sin3dR9wm8&feature=youtu.be

14.01.2022 The Nagle Award is a prestigious award that recognises students from St Finn Barrs Catholic Primary School who demonstrate the Charism of Nano Nagle in their everyday lives. The Charism of Nano Nagle is that of one who works to support those in need. To be like Nano Nagle is to be called to be compassion. Compassion means that we expand our circle of love to include all life, all beings. It was this compassion that drove Nano to dedicate her life to the poor. CONGRATULATIONS to Jack Arnold who is the August recipient of the Nagle Award. Jack has been working hard on his Personal Interest Project to raise money for the Cancer Council of Tasmania and he is also a compassionate and caring person to all he comes into contact with. Well done Jack
