23.01.2022 A great local history flashback from The Leader about the Kingsgrove Slasher who was eventually caught in bushland above Wolli Creek. A free talk on this month on Saturday 21st at Rockdale Library. 2pm. From The Leader: ... " "Some nights, he said, he prowled around for as long as eight or nine hours. There were streets - he named five in Earlwood and Bexley - where he had been into every single house or backyard, more than once, in some cases many times. "He had spent hours on end inside some individual houses, entering and exiting through every doorway and window in turn, or silently staring at the sleeping residents. "Three different psychiatrists gave evidence, all of it vague and inconclusive. Scanlon was mildly psychotic but not insane, and so notionally, he should have been able to control his impulses, which were kind of sexual but kind of not, in that he never attempted to sexually assault his victims." https://www.theleader.com.au//flashback-friday-photos-the/

On the outside, work is about to commence on restoration of the roof and dormer windows which will secure the house against water. On the inside of the house, we are embarking on the long process of digitising the collection. We will keep you posted on any developments and the opening date.

05.01.2022 A rare event! Historic West Maling (663 King George Rd Penshurst and now part of the Revival Church) will be opened to the public for the first time on December 8th 11.30-3.30 as part of their Christmas Fair. The house was built in 1889 for Albert Weigall, the first head master of Sydney Grammar School, and later used as a monastery.... It is one of purest examples of the Queen Anne style of architecture in Australia and is believed to be the first of its style built in Australia. Incredibly it still has much of its original internal joinery as well as the original driveway and some parts of the original gardens remain. The plans were designed by renown English architect Norman Shaw and it was built by Charles Halstead who was the supervising architect in Sydney. This may be your one and only chance to see this magnificent house as we are unsure when it may be open to the public again. (photos from Dept of Planning. Environment and Heritage website)
