25.01.2022 Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction and in some cases, it can rapidly become life threatening. If a patient is suffering from Anaphylaxis, it must be trea...ted as a medical emergency and you must call Triple Zero (000). If you know someone who suffers from severe allergies, it's important to be aware of how you can help them in an emergency. Always follow DRSABCD and if available, administer an Adrenaline Auto-Injector (Epi-Pen). To administer an Adrenaline Auto-Injector (Epi-Pen): Form a firm first around the auto-injector, and pull off the BLUE safety release. Place the ORANGE end against the outer mid-thigh at a 90 degree angle (it can be injected through clothing). Push the top button down hard until a click is heard or felt, and hold in place for three seconds. Remove the auto-injector and dispose of it safely being careful not to touch the needle. Commence CPR if the patient becomes unconscious and is not breathing normally. Remember the golden rule: Orange to thigh, blue to sky!

23.01.2022 St John Ambulance Busselton is supporting National Road Safety Week. From 15 - 22 November 2020, Western Australians are encouraged to 'Shine a Light' on road safety through NRSW Road Safety Community Grants, memorials and morning teas, the lighting of WA buildings and icons in yellow lights, or just by wearing a yellow ribbon to honour those we have lost and pledging to make the roads safer for everyone. ... https://roadsafetyweek.com.au

19.01.2022 On this day... 19 years ago 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning.... 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift. None of them saw past 10:00am Sept 11, 2001. In one single moment life may never be the same. As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today and tonight before you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted. #wewillneverforget See more
19.01.2022 Happy St John's Day! Many people don't know that St John WA was established here in 1891, by a group of volunteers who wanted to provide first aid training to t...he wider community. The very first of our classes commenced on 3 March, 1892 and was attended by 30 people. To compare, last year we trained over 481, 698 students! It's amazing that we have been able to deliver this service to the community for 129 years! We could not have come this far and accomplished so much without the support of our staff, volunteers and the WA community. Thank you for continuing to support us over the years.

When was the last time you donated? Book today to support your community and help save lives: donateblood.com.au/lifeblood-teams/emergency-services
18.01.2022 Down south or out and about for Leavers? We hope you guys have a great time after the crazy year we have had, but let's not forget to be mindful of each other's... safety and wellbeing. We don't want to sound like a broken record or like your parents, but here's some advice straight from our ambos: Drink responsibly - Space your drinks throughout the day and drink water between each alcoholic drink. You only get to go on Leavers once! Knowing first aid - There are a bunch of free first aid resources available on our First Responder app if you need it. From snake bites to bleeds, you have a first aid guide right in your pocket. You can download it from the app store for free so be sure to check it out. Stay hydrated - it's going to be a warm week so be sure to keep your fluids up (and we mean water!) Be sun smart - pretty straight forward, slip, slop, slap and slide. Illicit drug use - Most people enjoy Leavers without taking drugs, however if people do choose to take drugs it is important to minimise the harm. Make sure you have a friend with you who is not under the influence to keep you safe; and have a support plan if you run into trouble. In any case, if you do start to feel unwell make sure you tell the first aid personnel as they are there to help, not to judge people for their actions. The information you give them is confidential, so it is critical that if you are having any medical issues, seek medical aid immediately (and fully disclose what you have taken, if anything). Being upfront and honest may save your life, so let's stay safe and smart this weekend. Most importantly, have fun!

16.01.2022 Four off-duty police officers leapt into action after a 27-year-old man collapsed at a sporting centre in Leeming. The officers were playing indoor cricket on T...hursday 18 June 2020, when another player collapsed in the net next door. Hearing calls for help Sgt Simon Bowen immediately called 000, directing centre staff to bring the defibrillator. Sgt Brad Hasson and Det Sgts Nathan Carbone and Dan Whitney commenced CPR while Sgt Bowen connected the defibrillator. In the short time it took for St John Ambulance to arrive three shocks were delivered. The man, Dane, was treated at a nearby hospital where it was determined he had suffered a cardiac arrest. He has since made a full recovery. Dane said the incident highlights the importance of effective first aid training and defibrillators. If those police officers had not been there that night, as well as a functioning defibrillator, I can safely say I might not be here today, he said. I cannot express my thanks enough.
15.01.2022 Everyone knows that you should always call for an ambulance in a medical emergency, but there is often a bit of confusion around what constitutes a medical emer...gency. Please call Triple Zero (000) and request an ambulance in the following situations. Note: If you are unsure about whether a person requires an ambulance, it is better to call Triple Zero (000). chest pain or chest tightness sudden onset of weakness, numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg breathing difficulties unconsciousness uncontrollable bleeding a sudden collapse or unexplained fall unexplained fitting in adults injury from a major car accident a fall from a great height serious assault, including stabbing or shooting severe burns, particularly in young children infants who are fitting or have an ongoing fever. In a medical emergency, it is important that you do not drive yourself or another person to hospital as you may endanger your life, the patient's life or members of the public. Not only are you unable to concentrate on driving but moving some patients can make the situation worse. In a medical emergency, Communication Officers can provide medical advice and paramedics can commence essential life-saving treatment at the scene, as well as en route to hospital, rather than beginning treatment at the hospital. Please be mindful that just because you have called an ambulance, does not mean you will be seen sooner once you've arrived at the hospital. For when it's urgent, but not an emergency, you can always visit one of our Urgent Care centres. For more information, click here: stjohnhealth.com.au/walk-in-urgent-care/ We'd appreciate it if this message was shared, thank you.

12.01.2022 No matter where you are, we're here for you... but it helps if we know exactly where you are first. If you call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance, the first qu...estion you are asked is "What is the address of the emergency?" In order for us to get help to you as quickly as possible, please ensure you are providing us with the correct address. Describing nearby landmarks with identifying features will help too. In the event that you don't know where you are, you can always use the First Responder app. Our app can geo-locate you and identify your latitude and longitude coordinates. You can even call Triple Zero through the app as well. Please note you will need access to 3G/4G to use this feature. Learn more about the First Responder app here: stjohnwa.com.au/online-resources/st-john-first-responder-app
11.01.2022 Hello Busselton As part of our standard procedure during COVID-19, and to ensure our patients receive the best and most appropriate prehospital care, our Crews will be asking all patients if they have any flu like symptoms. This is to protect our amazing Volunteers and our Community of Busselton against the spread of any potentially infectious illness including COVID-19. When calling for an Ambulance, you will be asked by the 000 call taker if you have flu like symptoms. When... our crews arrive, they will ask you the same questions. Please don’t be scared to answer truthfully, even if you think you just have a mild cold. We have strict hygiene measures in place to keep you and our crews safe. Our goal is to help our community stay safe and stop the spread - but we can’t do that without our resilient and fantastic Community behind us. Stay safe Busselton, The SJA Team Busselton
11.01.2022 Happy Father’s Day to every dad, stepdad, grandad, pop ... and anyone who has ever been an influential father figure. We salute you all! Hold your nearest and dearest close every day. Love your green family
09.01.2022 Two years ago, we launched our very first Celebrate Life Event, where we helped reunite cardiac arrest survivors with the heroes who saved their lives. Due to C...OVID-19, we've had to make a couple of changes to this year's celebration, but that won't stop us from sharing these incredible stories! Have you or someone you know, suffered from a cardiac arrest, outside of hospital and were successfully resuscitated? We want to help tell your story. A patient's chance of surviving a cardiac arrest drops 10% for every minute they go without CPR. This is why we want to tell these stories -so we can educate people about the importance of early CPR and defibrillation. The more stories we can tell, the more awareness we can get out there! Tell us your cardiac arrest survival story here: stjohnwa.com.au/about-us/celebrating-life

We all have place...s to go, but sometimes we need some help from the WA community. It's important to give way to emergency service vehicles when our lights and sirens are on. Here are three easy ways you can help us get to where we need to go. See more
