25.01.2022 In Memory Of stretcher bearers and dressers, who risked their lives to save others during WW1. The very poignant photograph taken in October 1917, is of Austral...ian stretcher bearers and dressers of the 9th Field Ambulance, asleep on the railway embankment in front of Thames House, beyond Zonnebeke Railway Station. The men are utterly exhausted and have fallen asleep in the mud at their relay post, in total disregard of the cold and drizzling rain, which had just commenced to fall and the harassing shellfire of the enemy upon the Broodseinde Ridge area where they were on battle duty. They had worked sixty hours without rest. Australian divisions suffered 6,500 dead or wounded at the Battle of Broodseinde Ridge. The battle was part of the Third Battle of Ypres a major Allied offensive in Flanders which became known as Passchendaele. Identified, left to right: (the soldier extreme left is unidentified); Private S J Watson; Private Jim Campbell of 'Pendeen', O'Brien Street, Bondi, NSW (face obscured behind Watson); Private R 'Bob' Mowbray (right foreground, looking to the right); Private R (Roy or Ray) Jamieson of 'Lumeah', Railway Street, Petersham, Vic (beside Mowbray, on his left); Private Robert Barker of 'Mimosa', Abbotsford Road, Homebush, NSW (beside Jamieson, half face visible, looking to his right); Private J O'C Arkins of 'Moama', Murray River, NSW (to Barker's left, half face visible, looking straight at camera); Private Alfred W Moss of 'Kilmuir', Hampstead Road, Petersham, Vic (beside Arkins, face visible); unidentified. Lest We Forget. Photograph and information comes from the Australian War Memorial. Image file number AWM E00941.

23.01.2022 One thing is more clear than ever - Melbournians need our support at this time. Which is why weve partnered with The Royal Melbourne Hospital to set up an Urge...nt Care Centre at the Showgrounds to provide medical care to local residents. The mammoth effort St John volunteers have put in to ensuring the facility is ready to take patients today has to be commended - we thank you. See more

23.01.2022 Dear Members, I have been trying to negotiate a time to have a catchup this month. Mr Inglis must be very busy! Tracking him down has been worse than trying to catch Santa. It is long overdue for us to get together, I will aim to organise something for January/ February 2020. Either down at the depot or somewhere else? Thanks for your patience. Kevin J Mc Donald. Admin

23.01.2022 Members, We have lost a great man yesterday 31/7/2019. Peter Little was one of the most loved and respected characters of our little family. Peter had a long association with St John and SAAS. His presence at the Port Depot was enormous, one of the unique larger than life people. He was a mate, friend, teacher and leader to many. His knowledge and wisdom will be so missed by us all. He has contributed so much to this site and did become my go to guy for information. To Peters... family, we are with you in grief. Just another of our greats gone. Thank you for your service to the Port Adelaide, Metropolitan and country people of S.A. So many hearts are heavy. RIP mate. See more

22.01.2022 Members and friends, I had a message from Peters daughter Bridget this morning. The funeral will be held in Naracoorte. The arrangements are not finalised. I have obtained a quotation to get 55 members and friends to the funeral. With 55 members the cost would be $30 each. Can you please pm an intention to travel below and over the next couple of days see if we can get the numbers for 1 or even 2 buses. Your indication to travel must be a firm one and payment on the day please. Kevin J Mc Donald. Admin.

11.01.2022 Dear Members, I with regret for the Family and friends and you the membership. Due to being unwell myself I missed an email from Bruce Morrison informing you of the passing of our esteemed colleague. David Weste. ... Passed away in hospice care on the 2nd of May 2019. His Funeral was held on the 10th of May 2019 surrounded by Family and Friends and St John personnel who knew of the arrangements. David started his career with St John Ambulance in Keith, in the South East. Working full time for the ANZ Bank he transferred to Pt Adelaide and undertook duties with us at the Port Adelaide Division. He attained the rank of Corporal and was with the Division for 15years. He also for many years did the Divisional Secretary position for us. A many time, thankless job. All of us just expected the Division to run smoothly and didnt realise what men like David were doing in the background to ensure we were happy, safe and trained well. David was awarded the Long Service Medal. I remember Dave as a cadet on duty with him. He was an astute informative Ambulance Officer and a very likeable. I remember he smiled a lot and his smile touched so many at there lowest ebb. Bruce Morrison and Peter little helped with the information and Peter the photo below. I need to assure you messages will not go amiss again and I am taking steps to get other members to participate in helping publish news events, stories and funeral notices. R I P. Pictured. David. 11.01.2022 Two young people join our great generation history once again. Both received their degree of Physiotherapy and Paramedic studies at Flinders University. The Miller family aka Poulish and Scott and Sara Payne family. Our members I know would be so proud of these fantastic young people for not only holding up the great tradition of following on with the honour and respect comes with serving the public of Australia in their chosen endeavour. With the greatest hope Sarah Miller is retained by SAAS. If not and move on to other State Services. And Thomas Mark Payne stays close to home to practice. We are sure you will make us so proud.

06.01.2022 Members, found this amazing photo of the Eastern States fire disaster by a fellow named Jason Bull. It looks to be a terrifying scenario and the brave brethren first responder Fire Fighters in the lead of the photo seem to be watching and waiting as I would probably do as well. Kevin J Mc Donald. 04.01.2022 Hey Members, Robyn Gies nee Payne is in this lovely video. I must admit Vic Ambulance is really going overboard to keep morale up in this hard time we all endure. Well done Robyn.

03.01.2022 Dear Members, I need to report the loss of two members from the ranks of our Ambulance family. Divisional Officer Lloyd Wigg Passed 6th April aged 97. AO Bob Hourihan passed 9th March and was laid to rest on the 25th March 2020.... In these times we could not have attended services but quiet reflection of the great time had with both dedicated men to the public of South Australia will have to suffice. Thankful to Graham and Bruce Morrison for making us aware of this tragic news. Without the members letting us know of events we cant keep you informed. I can only thank the membership for there keen involvement. Posted by Kevin J Mc Donald. Admin See more
