24.01.2022 Rural road fatalities contributed to two thirds of last year's national road toll. According to the Australian Road Safety Foundation, speed is the number one d...riving issue on WA regional roads, with distraction and fatigue not far behind. 835 drivers tragically lost their lives last year, on regional roads across Australia. While it may be tempting to drive at high speeds, check your phone or operate your vehicle when fatigued, it is not worth your life. Please be mindful on our roads, and remember to enjoy the ride, safely.

11.01.2022 69% of Australian adults are unaware of how to help someone suffering from anaphylaxis*. Life-threatening allergic reactions can be pretty scary so it's impor...tant you know what to do, as you could help save a loved one or even a complete stranger. Remember to follow the St John Action Plan: DRSABCD and check to see if the patient has an epi-pen on them. Also remember the golden rule for epi-pen usage: blue to sky orange to thigh. We have seen a few needles through thumbs before, so always make sure to take a breath, focus and read the instructions carefully before administering the adrenaline. If you need a re-cap on how to use an epi-pen, you can view our guide here: https://bit.ly/37dZLb5. Alternatively, you could book in for a refresher course here: https://bit.ly/38dddxk Schools can also book a free 10 minute presentation. 06.01.2022 Wendy, one of the wonderful volunteers from our Yealering Sub-Branch, recently visited her local primary school to deliver our school based First Aid Focus prog...ram. The students had a great time looking through the ambulance and had the opportunity to learn practical, lifesaving first aid skills. Wendy also delivered our storybook 000 Hero. This story helps the students to identify what is an emergency and the phone number to call. The 000 Hero storybook, also explains the role of each emergency service and who can help in these emergencies. If you are interested in our FREE First Aid Focus program, contact us via our website: https://stjohnwa.com.au/youthengagement/youth-course-booking

03.01.2022 Would you know how to help someone suffering from an asthma attack? An asthma attack is a sudden worsening of asthma symptoms triggered by the tightening of mu...scles around the airways. It can be caused by (but not limited to) exercise, allergens and environmental factors. if you suspect someone is suffering from an asthma attack, sit the casualty upright and gently comfort them. Help administer 4 puffs from their inhaler. Wait 4 minutes and administer the same dosage again. If there is no relief from the inhaler, immediately call for an ambulance on Triple Zero (000). 01.01.2022 LUCKY ESCAPE FOR VOLLIE CREW A St John Ambulance crew is lucky to have avoided serious harm after they hit a horse on South Coast Highway late on Wednesday ...night. The volunteer crew hit the animal around 10pm on November 6 while returning to Jerramungup, after transferring a patient to Albany. Remarkably, they were not injured. St John's Great Southern acting regional manager Matthew Guile said it's a reminder of the dangers of country driving, and assured emergency services in the Jerramungup-Bremer Bay area would still be available if required. "Driving at dawn, dusk and in the evening does have some significant risks," he said. "We do a lot of patient transfers at those times of the day, as people need to get from one place to the other."
