24.01.2022 After Friday's initial post, here's the official word from Miss Stevenson: What’s My Business 2020" As with each year, the Year 5 and 6 students of GLC St John’s Newtown have been working tirelessly throughout the term to prepare their ‘What’s My Business’ products and stalls. The unit sees students create a business and product idea, to then pitch to a ‘shark tank’ of school personnel such as Ms Lange-Mohr, Mrs Ellis and Mr Illingworth (amongst others) in the hopes of secu...ring a $20 loan. Students then use this loan to buy and create products for sale over the course of two market days, with all proceeds going towards the Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS). Friday marked the first of these exciting market days, with weeks’ worth of work, preparation and planning leading towards their very own group stall. Spirits were high amongst all students at St John’s on Friday, as classes took turns visiting the market to partake in games, and to purchase some of the wonderful items on offer. The day was a rousing success, with many groups selling out, and boasting fantastic first round profits. The cycle will begin again next week, with groups re-stocking and re-imagining their businesses, in preparation for the Main Market Day in Week 8, before deciding how to best use their proceeds to help others in need. 21.01.2022 On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War. From the summer of 1918, the five divisions of the Australian Corps had been at the forefront of the allied advance to victory. Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wa...rs and armed conflicts. The reason poppies are used to remember those who have given their lives in battle is because they are the flowers which grew on the battlefields after World War One ended. This is described in the famous World War One poem In Flanders Fields. 'They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.' Lest We Forget

18.01.2022 Maggie Dent reminds us of the incredible benefits of reading with our children. Please enjoy this article which helps us understand why we need to prioritise this invaluable practice.

18.01.2022 Congratulations to our Year 5 & 6 'What's My Business?' owners who successfully took their new initiatives to market today. The students had previously 'pitched' their ideas in a Shark Tank-like scenario to gain the necessary funds ($20) to begin their ventures. A range of goods and services were on offer with all proceeds generated going to support Australian Lutheran World Service, the overseas aid and resettlement agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia. We're so proud of our young, aspiring businesswomen and men.

18.01.2022 Book Week celebrations at St John's Newtown certainly brought out the creativity of many of our students (and no doubt their fabulously talented parents)!

18.01.2022 Congratulations to our St John's Newtown students with the establishment of their 'What’s My Business' initiatives. Here we see some of their 'Shark Tank' pitches seeking a business loan to begin trading. All profits generated go toward supporting Australian Lutheran World Service.

16.01.2022 The wonderful thing about teachers is that all other professions emerge from the influence of those who are committed to developing the next generation. Today we celebrate those people who so wonderfully shape our children at St John's Newtown. Happy Teacher's International Day!

14.01.2022 GLC String Program 2021 In 2021 we are very excited to be launching our Year 3 Strings Program at both campuses. This program will be a welcome addition to our music department and forge the beginnings of an orchestral program at GLC. For one semester, students will be involved in a violin class. They will be provided with a violin to take home and practice in order to hone their skills. The learning of the violin will heighten students’ leadership and cooperative skills. T...hey will build their confidence and resilience and heighten their ability to focus. Students will also develop their aural ability and gain a practical understanding of music notation. The violin provides students with a very kinesthetic experience and draws together many thinking skills including social and emotional skills, critical and creative thinking and problem solving. In addition, it’s fun. Students will be energised with the sound of making music together, playing along to backing tracks and building friendships. We can’t wait to hear the results of these budding violinists in 2021. Earlier today, Armstrong Creek students Grace and Ryoma welcomed the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new instruments. See more

01.01.2022 There's a very creative pathway developing at our GLC Armstrong Creek campus, with our robotics devotees honing their skills for an upcoming competition. Known as SEMATICS (Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Arts, Technology) 102 2020, the team members compete in competitions where their advanced programming skills are required to complete time-limited tasks. In preparation for its next competition the team presented to Head of College Ms Lange-Mohr and Principal Ms Ellis. Mrs Hollett has been mentoring the young cohort, with everyone giving generously of their own time. We look forward to seeing them represent the College professionally and creatively, just as they have done on previous occasions.
